Common Questions and Answers about Speech pathology word lists

speech

Avatar f tn You have some form of aphasia, which is where your speech will get confused. You mentioned neuralgia, and pain can cause a person to lose focus. Hopefully you are receiving proper medications to stop your discomfort, because that should help you with your word thing, if that is the cause, and it's the one thing I KNOW will cause aphasia, which I have it from injuries in a car wreck.
Avatar f tn In White matter disease, pathology involves the brain white matter, either exclusively or in combination with grey matter changes. These include metabolism errors, exogenous toxins released by virus, autoimmune disease, leukodystrophy, demyelination, and radiation effects. Spasticity, muscle weakness, paralysis, hyper-reflexia and movement disorder may be the clinical features associated with white matter disease that need to be evaluated thoroughly.
Avatar m tn I have had a lot of problems with my speech including word retrieval but it all seemed to have started by being overdosed on my meds by a inept neurologist. However, I am still having trouble with my speech in that I sound like I am drunk due to slurring my words. I have even more problems when I am tired with slurring, stuttering, and word retrieval. I am to supposedly undergo a neuropsych consulation to find out if the cognitive problems I have are due to my MS diagnosis.
Avatar m tn Kel you didn't ask a question, so i going to assume you are wanting to know if what you experience and described, could be MS sx's of speech and swallowing issues? Lack of saliva production, if that is what you experience with your sx of dry mouth, is 'not the same' as the swallowing issues you generally read about in MS, dysphagia is basically to do with the actual muscle and nerve signal etc needed in the action of swallowing.
Avatar m tn It started 4 years ago, sometimes I could not remember the name of a specific word or I would remember the first letter of the world but not the entire word. I didn't really think much of it as it was not that frequent. But as of lately, it has been getting worse. For example, the other day, I could not remember the word "dishwasher" and I had to describe it instead.
Avatar n tn My husband had a complete thyroidectomy and his pathology results are being sent for a diagnostic consultation. The report stated : right lobe : preliminary diagnosis- Oncocytic adenoma 3mm left lobe : preliminary diagnosis-Oncocytic neoplasm 3cm What does this mean ? Why did they need a second opinion ?
665587 tn?1265946924 Guess I need to post here where all the people are!!!! Went to pre-op today, this is my pathology report. I really don't understand the oncocytic word (will have to look it up)--from what I was told, it is good news. As 'far as they can tell' it is confined to the thyroid. I will have tt on 11/18, start Synthroid 125 mcg. in hospital, will deal with radiation after thyroid heals. Okay, I am ready for you to grade me in understanding!!! Did I aget an A?
Avatar f tn Yes, fasiculations are a sign of compression. The word switching is unusual. I had slurred speech when I was having alot of weakness. The neck does affect the brain. I had dizziness. Google Cervical Myelopathy with speech problems and see what comes up.What specific word switching are you doing?
20896457 tn?1592763839 With that said, my son has something called sensory processing disorder. Tripping frequently is a sign as is garbled speech. When you do a speech eval, they check the three areas of speech which are articulation (the ability to understand the words she is saying), expressive language (ability to formulate what to say to others) and receptive language (ability to understand and process what is said to her).
Avatar n tn The FAST test The Face-Arm-Speech-Time (FAST) test lists the main symptoms to look out for: Face. Has the person's face fallen on one side? Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? Arms. Can the person raise both arms and keep them there? Speech. Is their speech slurred? Time. It's time to call 999 if you see one or more of these signs.
Avatar f tn I have a cousin that contacted me about a health issue. In 1999, she was diagnosed with White Matter Disease. I have been an ICU nurse for almost 25 years, but never heard of this. In researching this for her, I find that she is exhibiting many of the symptoms of progression described in the literature. She states that about 2 months ago, the episodes of what she describes as "floating" became more frequent and severe.
Avatar m tn t mention any speech impediments, like stuttering or lisping, only that his speech was limited to one word responses, and that those responses often made no sense. Is it possible that the boy is uncomfortable with you, and behaves oddly because of it?
Avatar f tn He can be active at times but would never consider him hyperactive. He never had any speech delays but seems to have difficulty expressing himself sometimes, grammar is off. I can understand him and most of what he says is completely appropriate but he seems to have difficulty phrasing his sentences. He is sometimes disruptive in his preschool and has difficulty transitioning at the beginning of the class and during clean-up time.
Avatar f tn Hi and welcome to our little MS community, I have speech issues and i'm known to laugh my way through life, my speech problems are a struggle but the laughing is more of a blessing.
Avatar n tn Using my case as an example; one Path report was at the Surgeon's office within a week but some tissue was sent to a Lab in CA and that report came quite a bit later. It does take time for the formal, final report to get on your chart though. Examination of tissue, dictation of the report, typing of the report which will be reviewed and signed as FINAL. I would call every few days (the surgeon's office) to check. They may just wait until your next appointment to explain it all to you.
476834 tn?1228398709 I can relate to your speech problems Ray and like you I have problems including word retrieval and slurring of my speech. Speechgeek has some good advice there and this should be included in your daily journal of symptoms. I am still waiting to see if I am going to actually have a neuropsych consult as my dr. often suggests things but doesn't come through so time will tell. These symptoms need to be documented by you and your dr. though.
335728 tn?1331414412 What's funny is that while it's going on, I have no idea what to call it! It's only after I've recovered that I can talk about the problem. Now, as to what to do about it - I'm not really sure. I fought it tooth and nail. Every time I came across a word that I couldn't connect to, I would say all the synonyms for that word, or all the words that came to mind that weren't that word, and eventually either I would figure it out, or hubby would figure it out.
Avatar f tn Do any of you have slurred speech or nasal sounding quality to your voice from MS?

Avatar f tn About 4 months in there was no improvement and so they did another evaluation and said that they believed he had Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Which is a motor speech disorder. Once we got that figured out we were able to gear his speech classes for Apraxia and have had amazing results. Before he only said 8 words and now he is up to almost 70.
486038 tn?1300063367 ve just repeated a word four or five time. I have to stop, breathe, and then try to refocus and continue talking. Sometimes I don't realize it until a family member will repeat back to me what I said and then I understand that I've been saying one word over several times. This has happened before, just not in every conversation. This is so frustrating, but I'm trying to learn to handle it.
1667595 tn?1303333906 Can anybody help me or offer advice ? my son will be 3 in 8 weeks time and his speech seems to be developing slowly, he only recently came out with his first 3 word sentence ' Catch the ball ' and has only said it once, the only other sentence's he says is ' hello mummy ' or ' no mummy/daddy'..
