Common Questions and Answers about Speech pathology schools

speech

Avatar f tn He can be active at times but would never consider him hyperactive. He never had any speech delays but seems to have difficulty expressing himself sometimes, grammar is off. I can understand him and most of what he says is completely appropriate but he seems to have difficulty phrasing his sentences. He is sometimes disruptive in his preschool and has difficulty transitioning at the beginning of the class and during clean-up time.
Avatar f tn You may want to ask your pediatrician for a referral for a speech evaluation. Depending on his age, speech may not be a bad idea. Sometimes when more demands are placed upon a child, his capabilities for fluent speech decrease. Extraneous movements could be from stuttering but also from a tic disorder. So you'd want someone to rule out the possibilities. Speech therapy can help in more ways think you would think, and would be of no cost if he is in public schools.
Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
Avatar f tn I disagree with the teacher. I would change him to a different school. He is too young to be labelled. Making noises can be very common for young children. I am not sure what type of noises you are referring to. It could be normal and not related to a tic disorder. But, it is also possible your son has a tic disorder. Tics are very common for children. Most go away within a year.
Avatar m tn Dear Dr Kevin, My 11yrs old brother has speech delay (due to Oxygen-brain matter since birth) has refused different schools because he didn't enjoy them. But, he's speech sessions with specialists. The problem now, He's toooo much into electronics; laptops, IPods, IPads, Smart phones... in the early morning, he'd search for laptop to play games and seach the net (the doesn't know what to type.. just randomly!) But he enjoys certain stuff like children songs, shows..
Avatar f tn i am very frustrated and worried at this point. she is receiving speech therapies at school for about 10months now. I don't see progress i need help with her pls respond.
688450 tn?1259468734 I wish that I could make time go back. My son had a speech delay and well, he had none of the classic symptoms of adverse reaction to the shots maybe because I kind of spread them out a little more than usual, and I also made sure he was not sick at any time he was being vaccinated. Any way, I just hope that his abnormal speech apraxia/dyspraxia is not vaccine related. I might never know.
Avatar f tn She is left handed, does not recognize her alphabet, can barely write her name and has a speech problem. The teacher informs me quite often that she cannot sit still, disrupts others, and just "isn't getting it" as far as her school work is concerned. As our granddaughter does live with my husband and I, but we do not have legal guardianship, I am limited as to what kind of professional help I can get her without parent's permissions (another matter completely).
611067 tn?1458591483 wants to have a law passed here in Utah that would make it so that businesses could or should stop having to say "Happy Holidays" and be able to put in their storefront windows, "Merry Christmas" or whatever they believe in. He wants to stop all the politically correct stuff. Now, I don't know about you, but it just ticks me off! He's not in my district, but I would never vote for him.
Avatar f tn His main issues are delayed speech and lack of emotional maturity for a 4 year old. Example, throwing tantrums when told no, acting out and hitting his brother when his brother won't give in or play. He is a very energetic child that is working on his speech skills, plays well with others and has actually done some things his brother never did at age 3. Help!!! I am going crazy here with everyones arm chair diagnosis and they think I am not paying enough attention to it.
Avatar m tn s thyroiditis have tongue issues that has/had an impact on your speech? I have the scalloped appearance to my tongue, a swollen feeling near the back and underneath the tongue which affects my speech. Did the thyroid meds fix the problem and if so, how long did it take?
Avatar n tn She needs to assess your daughters receptive and expressive speech abilities as well as assessing her for semantic pragmatic speech disorder. Does your daughter/son have any sensory difficulties? Are they over or under sensitive to sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste/texture, balance and co-ordination? If you want to look at the diagnostic criteria for autism you can google DSM IV for autism and see the list of characteristics.
Avatar f tn By kindergarten, all kids in the US are screened for speech in the public schools. If you are concerned, you could call your doctor and be referred for a speech evaluation or go through an evaluation through your local school system now that he is three. My older son was evaluated for speech concerns at almost 4 and the speech pathologist concluded he would self correct as his articulation issues were all within normal for his age group.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about possible therapies for your son.
Avatar m tn How to train ( or educate) a mildly mentally retarded child having markedly delayed speech . He is 4 yr old but V.M S is that of a 2 yr & 6 months' child. Can speak only two simple words together . He does not mix with other children in preschool( where he goes for last one month) may be because unable to speak much { he siarted speaking at age of 3 yrs} ;Does he need a special tutor ? Or parents should be encoureged to get involved in interacting and stimulating his skills and speech.
Avatar f tn His speech is slurred all the time and he constantly drools. When he was a baby and began speaking, his speech was as clear as a toddler’s speech would be. It has been getting worse as the years go by; it’s to the point where he’s mostly unintelligible. He has seen several neurologists and other doctors, to no avail. He was on Topomax for a few years with no results. His short-term memory has been affected so he is no longer on Topomax.
Avatar m tn Before I talk about depresion which can definitely effect speech, Im going to say there are a lot of serious neurological causes of speech problems; if this is a possibiity you must get it checked. Drowsiness caused by alcohol, drugs or chemicl problems like diabetes and salt imbalance can make you slur your words.
Avatar n tn she has started babbling in our mother tongue but will her speech be delayed as people at day care dont speak our mother tongue or dont even understand it/
473493 tn?1236836912 Services can be provided by early intervention or the public schools in your area. You may want to look for behaviorally trained professionals to supervise a treatment program by checking www.bacb.com for a person in your area.
Avatar m tn Hi there. Well, what a good parent you are to look objectively at your child and to have a desire to help him! Good job recognizing that there may be a problem. Speech develops at different rates for all kids for sure. Your son does seem to fall outside of normal. As he goes to 'school'--- is this a preschool? What do they say? Usually preschools are good at identifying kids with various issues. There are three parts of speech. There is articulation which is saying the words.
5740955 tn?1373676528 Hi there. Agree with Anniebrooke. Kids do tend to develop speech a their own rate. But having difficulty in speech can really hinder a child. They often have emotional outburst due to lack of communication or being understood and they also often have social friends. It's hard to play with another child when they can't understand you. So, I would talk to your pediatrician and get a referral to a speech pathologist to determine if there is a problem.

Avatar f tn So, around this time last year I experienced tingling in my left hand that lasted for a few days, coupled with extreme fatigue. Days later, I developed nystagmus only upon waking that lasted for about 10 minutes or so. That eventually went away after about a month. About six months later I had a severe headache that migrated to my right eye and lasted for over a week. Went to an optometrist, no optic neuritis.
Avatar n tn Hai am student doing my PG in speech and hearing. Am doing dessertation on the topic " Normative data of attention span, eye contact, sitting tolerance and compliance, age < 3-4 years. So i request you to send me some articles which has focused on these areas and also suggest me how to measure such behaviours in normal children.
709940 tn?1231900307 He is also extremely violent. He does make eye contact most of the time and his speech is excellent. He does not understand he, she, what, why or how and everything is I don't know. He "W" sits when he plays and he has several tactile and sensory issues such as covering ears when there are loud noises and bright lights and will only eat dry foods. I have been to every doctor known to man and cannot seem to get a diagnosis.
574101 tn?1245537020 I don't see how schools can be qualified to diagnose autism, but they seem to want to. I am not sure if they get more funding if they have more kids with that diagnosis or not. Is it a public school or a private school? They should not be allowed to give him a food he is allergic to. If you have medical paperwork that you filled out when he started that stated he is allergic to soy and is not to have it, they have to follow your medical directions.
