Avatar f tn The effects of numbness tongue like speech difficulties and swallowing difficulties have to be tackled with and modifications made to suit. Speech language pathologists can help you with use of language and alternative means of communication. They also help you with the ability to swallow. Texture of food can be modified to make swallowing easier, thin liquids can be thickened to avoid choking, small bites and slow chewing can help the dysphagia.
Avatar f tn Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.
Avatar m tn Traditionally, aphasia suggests the total impairment of language ability, and dysphasia a degree of impairment less than total. However, the term dysphasia is easily confused with dysphagia, a swallowing disorder, and thus aphasia has come to mean both partial and total language impairment in common use.
Avatar f tn I met many parents at the clinic who took their children to see an SLP (speech language pathologist) because the child was confused after being only exposed to 2 languages. It's certainly something to think about.
Avatar m tn From reading up online that I've been doing, it looks like it could be another learning disability too, like a speech-language disorder. For example: "Receptive Language Disorders - Receptive Language Disabilities: People with receptive language disorder may have difficulty understanding spoken language, responding appropriately, or both. This leads to substantial difficulty communicating.
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
Avatar n tn First appointment the Neurologist said she did not think he was on the spectrum and said i should think about/read up on adhd (said he was too young to diagnose but we need to think about) last weeks appointment she just said that my son has language delay and to keep up w/ speech etc etc..she told me that he CAN catch up and she says she has seen this before (esp boys) and she is optimistic he will catch up to his peers eventually...
500419 tn?1220124743 So you should find out from head start how much time does he really get. My child is 11 and is still in speech and works online, but is so much better. But If I were you I wouldn't put him in school yet. I would take him for speech on his own, talk to him a lot and read to him everyday and go to the park.
Avatar m tn Hi there. The degree of speech impairment that your brother will have could vary from dysarthria or slow, slurred speech due to damage to areas that control muscles of speech mechanism, apraxia of speech where there is difficulty in saying words correctly in a consistent manner. This deficit is evaluated immediately after the injury by a neurologist.
Avatar m tn Have you had your daughter evaluated by a speech and language pathologist? There are three parts of speech---- articulation, and expressive and receptive speech. The last two are the areas that would affect a conversation. I would have this checked first. Your pedicatrician will be happy to give you a referrel for this. Having difficulties in receptive and expressive speech would surely cause some social interaction problems especially with age mates.
Avatar n tn You are bound to have some concerns if autism is already in the family. But children can have strange interests and not be on the spectrum. On the autism forum, if you click on the Health Page link at the top right hand corner of the forum page I have posted the diagnostic criteria under DSM IV for autism and have asked parents to post examples of their childs' behaviour that fits the criteria. This will give you examples of the behaviours the professionals are looking for.
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
6965936 tn?1394227011 They used baby sign language to help my daughter she was delayed in speech and would get so frustrated because she couldn't tell us what she wanted. But then we found out she has anxiety that causes selective mutism so they went a different route instead of the sign language.
Avatar f tn t hear us), they are pretend playing (they pretend to be on the phone, they pretend to roll a train on the floor and make the train sound), their speech delay (they have not developed communicative speech, i.e they do say words and they know names of several objects; however, they are not using their language skill to communicate and make requests of things they want such as more milk or juice please and so forth)..
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
543250 tn?1214743177 I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.
16666184 tn?1450255078 t possibly be there, lack of taste. Language and speech becoming increasingly difficult and needs more pauses and corrections. Significant weight loss 60+ pounds in 4mos. Shutting in. I'm being eaten piece by piece. Mind. Body. Soul. And no one can tell me what it is. I don't know what's worse, knowing something is wrong or knowing you might never know what ate you piece by piece.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar m tn If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
Avatar f tn The school district you live in can evaluate him to determine if he qualifies for speech/language therapy. One of my children was evaluated for not talking at age three, received services from out school district as a preschooler and then no longer needed language services by the time he was a kindergartner and then no longer needed speech services by the time he was in 2nd grade. I consider him a success story now that he has successfully graduated from college and is gainfully employed.
Avatar f tn my hubby has been finishing hisbusiness degree online through nnu. the program is geared towards working adults.
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
779913 tn?1236003421 What type of speech/language delay does she have? Has she had a speech/language evaluation -- if so, how delayed is she? I'm not familiar with a body of literature that identifies a causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease specifically with speech delay. I'm interested to hear your answers and I'll keep up with this discussion.
