Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.

I have a 5 yr old daughter who to me shows signs of adhd. She has a speech and language delay. She talks very loud and excessive. She only sleeps 7 hrs at night and at least 4 times a week shes up between 2 and 4am and stays up till morning. Within the last year she has had a BM then played in it and used it like finger paint on her walls. I have been to a behavioral specialist and she said shes attention seeking. I filled a form as well as her teacher.

Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.

I think that kids that have multiple languages spoken are at a great advantage as knowing multiple languages is fantastic but it does create issues for early communication sometimes. Often along the lines of the primary caregiver speaking one language and many others in their world speaking another. I think I'd ask her doctor on her next doctor's visit about the lack of speech. It is a good sign if she gestures and communicates in 'some way'.

F ollow the recommendation for Speech/Language therapy. His expressive communication is delayed and he requires professional intervention. If he is not enrolled in a pre-school program it would make sense to do so because this will expand many fold the opportunities hor him to be communicating.

Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.

If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.

Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.

The school district you live in can evaluate him to determine if he qualifies for speech/language therapy. One of my children was evaluated for not talking at age three, received services from out school district as a preschooler and then no longer needed language services by the time he was a kindergartner and then no longer needed speech services by the time he was in 2nd grade. I consider him a success story now that he has successfully graduated from college and is gainfully employed.

My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.

I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.

What type of speech/language delay does she have? Has she had a speech/language evaluation -- if so, how delayed is she? I'm not familiar with a body of literature that identifies a causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease specifically with speech delay. Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.
