Avatar f tn I met many parents at the clinic who took their children to see an SLP (speech language pathologist) because the child was confused after being only exposed to 2 languages. It's certainly something to think about.
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
Avatar m tn I think stuttering is addressed with speech and language pathologists but also can be related to anxiety to be addressed by a therapist. But I love your answer here, Connie! Thank you for that. Hope you come back to the forum as there are many who could benefit from your insight!
293420 tn?1243142938 I requested this a few months ago and got a reply saying that it would be considered...but, still nothing. There are at least 5-8 posts per week about Speech/Language delays in the child development forum. I'm an SLP and my son has Apraxia (motor speech disorder). Not only do I have lots of advice to offer to parents of children with speech delays, but it would be nice to network with other moms going through the same experiences. Hurry!
Avatar f tn I am wondering if you could get an evaluation with a speech-language pathologist? A good SLP can perform cognitive function tests and the fact that you are having word-finding difficulties sounds like a job for an SLP. I've had several MRIs of the brain for what seems to be (after 3 yrs of wondering) Lyme disease, so I do notice when people speak of lesions on their MRI.
193609 tn?1292180293 A speech language pathologist (SLP) will have expertise in communicating with children beyond using words. The SLP can assist you in learning simple signs and other ways of communicating with your child. The SLP can also perform tests to learn about his receptive and expressive language functioning (even children who do not speak yet can be assessed to some degree with the correct instruments).
594330 tn?1219167188 I am worried sick about his lack of comprehension and am looking for answers. Today I had a child development specialist and a speech pathologist observe him and thespeech pathologist said she was more concerned with his lack of command following than use of the language. I don't know if maybe there are things I can try to do or change to help him reach this level of cognitve and communitive development.
Avatar m tn If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar n tn I think you can bring up the topic of a feeding tube to your doctor without sounding crazy. Also, a speech-language pathologist might help you with the recommendation to the doctor. Are you seeing a gastroenterologist about this or just her pediatrician?
Avatar n tn 5 year old guy has been diagnosed by three specialists (Developmental Pediatrician, Devel. Psychologist, Speech Pathologist) as being high functioning autistic sepectrum disorder. He will need an aid in preschool during free-play to help him learn how to integrate in groups. But i just wanted other readers to know that if I had been a stay-at-home-mom i would have never had noticed a problem. It was only in the preschool setting that these issues became obvious.
Avatar f tn For proper evaluation, it is best that you discuss this with your attending physician or your speech-language pathologist. Treatment will depend on the underlying issue. Stress-reduction techniques like meditation, acupuncture, biofeedback, massage, and yoga may also help. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn For most stroke patients, the rehabilitation process includes nursing, occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), therapeutic recreation (TR) and speech therapy (or speech language therapy, SLP). OT involves exercise and training to help the stroke patient relearn everyday activities, sometimes called the Activities of daily living (ADLs), such as eating and drinking, dressing, bathing, cooking, reading and writing, and toileting.
Avatar f tn but cant tell the complete story. Her pediatrician refers her to a speech language pathologist. We are waiting for first evaluation appointment. We kind of frustrated with the pediatrician for that late diagnosis although we showed our concern at the previous appointment. currently, We are living in broward county, florida and closest counties are palm beach and miami dade counties.
Avatar n tn It is possible to provide therapy and make problems worse, so they would want the ENT to review and determine the cause of the hoarseness. Many times a speech pathologist will not make a diagnosis. Speech and language symptoms are often a sign of something else.
Avatar n tn At age 4, his doctor felt that maybe he fell on the spectrum of Autism because of delayed speech and his behavior. I took him to see a speech pathologist. She said he had receptive/expressive disorder. I took him to a neurologist, and after 15 minutes of observation, he decided that it is Autism. I was told to get myself educated on the subject. After taking my child off all milk and wheat products, I found a DAN doctor. This doctor felt that he does not have Autism.
20896457 tn?1592763839 I think she is going to have to be evaluated by a speech/language pathologist. She knows how to say plenty of words, but most of them don't come out clearly. I don't think people outside of our family would understand her. She also only says a few 2-3 word sentences. Although, she does babble all day, like she's trying to speak in sentences, but it's just gibberish.
Avatar m tn that is why I suggested a speech evaluation from speech pathologist to help you with your language concern! Can't fix the depression so gotta find a way to fix the speech problem.
Avatar n tn Talk to your doctor and ask for a referral to a speech-language pathologist. This is a therapist specially trained to help with problems such as the one you are describing. It sounds like you are having trouble with the strength of your vocal cords, or with something blocking the movement of your vocal cords.
8477687 tn?1398290186 A speech language pathologist can treat you for paradoxical vocal chord dysfunction. If you are having so many other symptoms/issues, it would be no wonder you have PVCD. It can be the result of a brain stem compression, or GERD. See an SLP to work on breathing more efficiently. Usually speech therapy is effective.
Avatar m tn A consultation with a certified speech-language pathologist who specializes in voice therapy is recommended. They will recommend various techniques to assist you and provide relief to your situation.
Avatar f tn It would be sensible to speak with her pediatrician and see if she should be evaluated by a Speech/Language pathologist for the purpose of assessing her swallowing process and the status of her oral muscles.
500419 tn?1220124743 Head Start is great for the social interaction. But from your post your son needs not only speech but language also. Furthermore I'm not sure that head start has a pathologist? You said they are going to work on speech in head start. Did they tell by the classroom teacher or by a professional in that field. I prefer programs like ELP and the Early Intervention Programs which have the pathologist on staff .
310788 tn?1251499896 There may be an hereditary problem with the oral muscles or structures of the mouth. He should be evaluated by his pediatrician and by a Speech/Language pathologist.
