Avatar f tn My seven year old son had speech delay. He is in Ist grade and going for speech therepy in school . He had beads stuck in her both ears for almost 2.5 years, my poor baby,we were ignorant. Now also when we or my friends ask him some thing, he says "what" at least 2-3 times. When I asked why we have to repeat question, he said " he doesn't understand what we asaked". We didn't do any tests. We are bilingual family but speak only english with him.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
5549102 tn?1376522673 Hi there. Well, speech is a funny thing in that kids develop it at different rates. There is a very wide range for normal. Dropping letter sounds at the beginning, end or in the middle are all different issues in relation to speech. Is he putting any words together, like two words such as 'go bye'? "me juice"? That is probably the next thing to look for besides the articulation piece. But I think at this point, I wouldn't worry.
Avatar f tn Yes It does sound as if she needs some help with her speech and communicating. How does she get on with the other 2 siblings does she get the same attention as they do, do you talk and communicate with her in the same way ?
Avatar f tn Hi. Well a couple of things. First let me tell you that it is not uncommon for a 5 year old to not recall or tell a parent what happened at school. This is something you hear over and over. They get tired, they don't feel like discussing it and as we parents that care about them and are interested in them want to know everything they do when they aren't with us . .. we get a little frustrated when they say they don't know.
1667595 tn?1303333906 my 4 year also had a speech delay after speaking to her pediatrician she was put into a pediatric speech therapy session twice a week for 30 mins a day it has helped her so much she has completed her therapy and is now speaking in full sentences that we can actually understand speak to your pediatrician there is alot of local county hospitals that offers this pediatric therepy and they are wonderful with kids thats all they deal with is kids with problems in speech i hope this helps you

1168536 tn?1263231164 I am the Mother of an adorable 5 year old little boy. He has a speech delay that we thought was because of frequent ear infections causing fluid in his ears when he was a baby. However he did have tubes put in his ears when he was three years old, and passes hearing tests every 3 months but now still at 5 still has a major speech delay. Sometimes he is clear and other times it almost sounds like he talks like a child that is somewhat hard of hearing. I wish i could say that it was just that...
Avatar f tn So when are kids suppose to start talking?? I nanny a little girl who will be 2 in December. She doesn't really talk. She can say, hi, mom, dad, no, and happy...I think that's it..should her parents be concerned? I've been trying to get her to say small words but she just looks at us like..No...or thinks we are punishing her...Help?
356518 tn?1322263642 They both have severe speech problems and since they have been on the medicine their speech is improving but they seem like they are just drugged out to me. I have talked to their dr but he assures me this will pass. The 6 year old is extremly emotional while on it, I cut their dose to half of what the dr said and they still are not right. Any suggestions? I asked for strattara and dr says it will not work for them.
Avatar f tn Thank you for posting. I continue to be astounded at what they can help kids with these days and how far kids can come with this intervention. I'm so pleased that your grandson is getting some targeted help. I found that by doing as much as I could outside of therapy as well--- at home with my son, it really helped. therapy is only so many hours a week so I always felt like it was up to me to provide input or activities or carry over from therapy at home.
Avatar n tn Is it for looks? or function? or speech? or self esteem? You should also think about how hard it is going to be to keep them clean. If it is difficult for you to brush and floss her teeth at home it will be even more difficult with the braces on. Did you or her dad or someone she adores wear braces currently or in the past? Maybe you could have them talk to her or show her a picture.
Avatar f tn Many assume that language issues are associated with autism and they can be------- but speech issues are quite common with sensory kids and speech delays exist on their own. Social skills did not come naturally to my child. We have worked very hard teaching them to him. We did a "social skills camp" last summer. Very helpful.
Avatar n tn go to www.northstartdogs.com, they have golden retrievers that are trained service dogs for kids with autism. I blieve the study that you are referring to in NY is the one where a woman who is a dog trainer helps the child train their dog. you can do a search on kids with autism, dogs, LI, NY and see if that links you to any of the articles. i have a 4 year old son diagnosed PDD-NOS. He had significant speeech delay recently his speech has improved tremendosly.
Avatar f tn Regardless of diagnosis, absolutely continue to pursue services to help your son with his speech and his temper. Help exists for the issues that you are describing, you just have to keep looking until you find a therapist and behavior analyst who you work well with.
397435 tn?1201128125 they really cannot potty train her because of the lack of speaking. She is in special school and goes for speech but there is no improvement in regards to her actually speaking. They went for all nuerology tests and nothing is wrong, blood was all good. The question I have is anybody have any idea what this could be? Does anyone knjow why this happens? Ideas to try to get her to speak? I feel horrible. She is very smart and does interact. Just does not speak. I thank all who relies.
Avatar f tn Hi there. Well, I have a question for you. What is the determination of why he has a speech issue? Sometimes motor planning can be involved (praxis). Has anyone talked to you about your son's motor planning? Things like his ability to hold a pencil or use children's scissors are clues. Motor planning is the part of the brain the controls our motor movements. It's much more than that as well.
1678609 tn?1304766347 kids fear being made fun of or reprimanded for being 'different'. If you can make her feel calm and secure with you, no matter how she talks, that is a step toward her developing the skills she needs to communicate clearly with others. Hope this helps!
Avatar f tn If you are concerned, you could call your doctor and be referred for a speech evaluation or go through an evaluation through your local school system now that he is three. My older son was evaluated for speech concerns at almost 4 and the speech pathologist concluded he would self correct as his articulation issues were all within normal for his age group. If they hadn't been, we would have started speech therapy. It never hurts to find out. (in my opinion.
Avatar f tn Your pediatrician would probably have recommended that as they look for kids who struggle with speech. Early intervention can do tremendous things in helping a child. I had my sons watch my mouth when I spoke to them. I would encourage them to speak but if you push, you are right. This can lead to frustration and an internal esteem issue for the child if he really has a neurological reason for difficulty with speak.
Avatar m tn This comes naturally for some kids and not so much for others. A language barrier or speech issue will make it more difficult for sure. What you do in this case is socialize him like crazy. Take him places--------- go to the park and play with the other kids. You or your wife stay with him and guide the games and interaction. Chase is a biggie at that age. Good because the kids are excited, interacting, and you are also working on the nervous system.
Avatar f tn It is all exercises for the mouth. But a speech therapist can help you the best with this. My son had trouble chewing and speech therapists and occupational therapists can help with that as well. So, I can't say for sure what is going on with your son. You've seen a specialist that says possible autism. I'm just a mom on the internet so I don't want to discount that. I'd take any steps that they've recommended.
667445 tn?1230750538 We were told this was the earliest we could test her at Long Beach Memorial in Long Beach, California. We had the hearing, mouth, eyes, everything checked. They did recommend her for speech therapy - however since she was in a private school - they would not pay for it. After working with her at home - she has progressed wonderfully. She is now an 8 year old diva that we can't get to be quiet. My son was also similiar - however we delayed in getting him tested.
