speech

20896457 tn?1592763839 With that said, my son has something called sensory processing disorder. Tripping frequently is a sign as is garbled speech. When you do a speech eval, they check the three areas of speech which are articulation (the ability to understand the words she is saying), expressive language (ability to formulate what to say to others) and receptive language (ability to understand and process what is said to her).
Avatar n tn I am not sure exactly what you mean by slurring of words. If her speech is normal in content, her language capabilities are OK but her articulation is not clear, the medical term for that would be dysarthria: poor articulation basically. There are many possible neurologic disorders that can cause dysarthria. However, please note I am not trying to imply with the following that I think your wife has one of these but rather just providing general information.
1174407 tn?1263573399 My 7 year old was diagnosed with adhd last year. we have not put him on medication and he's been doing great. he's had good grades and is no longer hyper. Up until about a month ago his grades started droping and I'm now getting complaints from the teachers as he is not finishing his assignments in class. I don't have this problem at home.
Avatar m tn Is he of normal intelligence? How does he fare at nursery school? What does his mother have to say about his speech? You didn't mention any speech impediments, like stuttering or lisping, only that his speech was limited to one word responses, and that those responses often made no sense. Is it possible that the boy is uncomfortable with you, and behaves oddly because of it?
Avatar f tn My 4yrs old son have a problem in speech delay until know few words he can say. Sometimes when you talk to him and say something to him you can see to his face that he cannot comprehend to what you are saying. His very energetic, always shouting he loves to watch tv like cartoons etc and when he saw something he likes he hit it. slap it...
Avatar f tn He has not been diagnosed, although they think he has something which is in the spectrum of autism disorder. But does have a speech and language disorder. He ahs the understanding of a 2.5year old! Its very frustrating, he finds it very difficult to understand what im sayin. Its the same for me when i try to understand what he's trying to say. He's slowly getting better since he started school last september.
Avatar f tn Now, at the very least he displays a disorder of speech/language, and this needs to be evaluated. He might also display a learning disability. Whether or not he displays any condition along the Pervasive Developmental Disorder spectrum can only be determined by an evaluation with a pediatric menatl health professional.
476834 tn?1228398709 I don't know anything about dyslexia, but your symptoms certainly could be an MS thing. I've been known to use the wrong words, use words in the wrong order, slur, etc. Along the same lines, in the exacerbation that led to my diagnois, I would be typing along as I took notes of phone conversations and it was like I was in beginning typing again, going slow and repeatedly having to back up to redo letters and words. It's frustrating, but somehow we muddle through it!
676912 tn?1332812551 He doesn't have speech therapy. He's five years old. He speaks clearly, and has a huge vocabulary, normal for his age. I'm not 100% sure about all of it, but I know it has more to do with his brain and comprehension.
Avatar m tn My son was saying 20 words by the age of 18 months and by 2 1/2 had over a hundred words, however they were nearly all labels, he found it very difficult (and still does to a certain extent) to structure sentances, ask questions etc etc. By 3 years old he was quite echolaic, confused me, you, your etc rearely used the word no and never said yes in response to a question.
Avatar n tn I would definately address this with your pediatrician and work on some referrels to a hearing specialist to make sure she is hearing and a speech pathologist to evaluate speech. They start speech therapy as early as tiny infants. Sounds crazy because they aren't suppose to be talking yet but speech is much more than just saying words. The mouth muscles for example must be strong. Feeding issues with infants are often handled by speech pathologists.
Avatar m tn ll likely need to see a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to determine exactly which type of speech disorder it is, and it will help with identifying the types of medical conditions you could be dealing with etc. Do you also have difficulty pronouncing words with similar sounds like ir, are and ur ? Hope that helps.......
Avatar f tn My daughter is does not say too many words. She is normal otherwise, plays with other children, stacks blocks, I can tell her to do something she does it perfectly. She does say simple words like hey, bye bye, stop but other than that she has her own language. She will babble something and point to it or take my hand if she wants me to walk with her somewhere babbling (im guessing) about where we are going, but no real words. I took her to the ENT and they told me not to rush her. But....
Avatar f tn My 4 year old daughter has been speaking clearly and concisely with no stammering or hesitation, however, within the last two weeks has begun repeating the first 3 or 4 words of each sentence. Is this normal for this age?
Avatar n tn My son is 4 and a half years old. He has delayed speech. His sentences are one to three words. His doctor had always said he was perfect. Everything else has developed normally and on time. At age 4, his doctor felt that maybe he fell on the spectrum of Autism because of delayed speech and his behavior. I took him to see a speech pathologist. She said he had receptive/expressive disorder. I took him to a neurologist, and after 15 minutes of observation, he decided that it is Autism.
470168 tn?1237471245 My son has just been referred to an audiologist as he has problems with auditory memory, pronounces words wrong, may have dyslexia etc. Any info about this condition would be useful, especially as a comorbid condition with autism.
594330 tn?1219167188 My son will be 2 years old next month and uses very little language, approximately 12-15 words. He gets what he needs by pulling me to things and pointing or crying at the sink for water. He doesn't respond to things that I think he should be doing by now, llike "Go get me the ball" or any commands beyond "come here" or "no" . I am worried sick about his lack of comprehension and am looking for answers.
Avatar f tn Hello. I just came from a specialist ENT doctor for my hearing issue. I did a very quick and not too thorough hearing test in a soundproof booth. My hearing was in normal range but I swear something is wrong. It's been happening for years but is getting worse. I have trouble understanding some words people say, especially with background noise. Even if the background noise is quiet it can happen. I hear the sound coming from their mouth but I cant understand the word.
Avatar f tn Could be. Could also be a speech delay or disorder. I would ask for a referral to a speech language pathologist.
Avatar m tn There are three parts of speech--- articulation (making the sounds) is one we all think of with speech. but there is also receptive speech (the ability to take in and organize what is said to you so that you can understand it) and expresssive (the ability to formulate the thoughts you want to express, to organize those thoughts into words to speak). Motor planning has a huge impact on these speech componants.
Avatar n tn If you click on the Health Page icon on the top right hand corner of this forum page you can go into The Behavioural Characteristics Behind the DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria for Autism. This is the clinical criteria the professionals use to assess whether a child is on the spectrum or not. Parents have also posted examples of their child's behaviour that fits the criteria so that will give you an idea of what the professionals are looking for.
Avatar f tn Oh yea, when I touch my face it sets off the shock sensations and exaggerates them. I have dysphonic speech and scanning speech. I take cool showers because I can not stand the heat. That has been going on for several years now. At work i had to write simple medical paragraphs. Someone brought it to my attention about mispelled words, run on words, and sentences. Then i started slowing way down and proof reading them. Guess what? It continued. Please help me feel better about myself.
Avatar f tn About 4 months in there was no improvement and so they did another evaluation and said that they believed he had Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Which is a motor speech disorder. Once we got that figured out we were able to gear his speech classes for Apraxia and have had amazing results. Before he only said 8 words and now he is up to almost 70.
