Avatar f tn Look up sensory integration disorder and how it effects speech. My son has sensory integration disorder and speech is affected. How does your child do with fine motor skills by the way? Very often processing disorders are the culprit for what you describe. In the area of motor planning and one other area-------- auditory processing. Some kids hear all things at the same volume------- child breathing next to them, mower outside, mother's voice asking a question.
Avatar n tn When my child was first assessed by Speech/Language professional she told me straight away that with that kind of speech problem it is usually autistic spectrum disorder eg. not understanding pronouns (I, me, you, she, he, his, hers, they, them etc); difference in receptive/expressive language (expressive language at age 7, receptive at age 3) and echolalia.
Avatar f tn My son is 34 months and recently started speech. He says a lot of words and a few phrases "shoes . . wew are you?" but seems to be behind. At his first speech session I asked the speech therapist if she noticed any signs or symptoms beyond speech. She mentioned his hand movements when he gets excited remind her of her autistic clients. She stated that she cannot make any diagnosis regarding autism and after more sessions she can refer him to a specialist if necessary.
Avatar f tn receptive, expressive and articulation. Receptive is understanding what is said to you. expressive is forming what you want to say back and articulation is actually saying the words. All three take a tremendous amount of neurological coordination in the brain. If any one part is impacted, speech is difficult. And the same function that controls speech controls ability to regulate mood/impulse control, etc. My son has sensory integration disorder. We've had to work on these things.
Avatar m tn If he is repeating what you say back to you, that is called echolalia and it's a speech disorder commonly associated with autism. I would start with a speech/language therapist and you can also get him screened by the school district for other delays/problems. What state are you in? Maybe I can help point you to the right agency?
Avatar m tn When I would tell him to pick a card and flip it over he would just repeat what I said. When I would ask if he wanted to flip one over, again he would repeat it. It is very nerve-wrecking. Anyone have a clue on what could be wrong?
Avatar n tn My 5 year old daughter has just been dianosed with social communication disorder as well as delayed speach. i am concerned she may feel isolated from other children at school as she does not know how to comunicate with them. what help can be given to her for this.
Avatar m tn Is there a name for where a person involuntarily repeats thoughts out loud in speech, much like echolalia where a person would involuntarily repeat speech or sounds that they heard?
676912 tn?1332812551 He doesn't have speech therapy. He's five years old. He speaks clearly, and has a huge vocabulary, normal for his age. I'm not 100% sure about all of it, but I know it has more to do with his brain and comprehension.
Avatar n tn My mom says I sound like I am mumbling and it is hard to understand what I am saying even when I fill like I am yelling what could this be could I have a hearing or communication disorder sometimes I do have to ask people to repeat themselves but not because I couldn't hear, I didn't understand what they said the first time and I have to hear it a second time to understand.
Avatar n tn If he does that is delayed echolalia and a SALT should be made aware of this and should assess his speech as echolalia is a speech disorder. He may rely on TV/film phrases to make up his speech. If that is the case it will be even harder to remove the cussing because he is lifting who dialogues from TV/films and putting them together like a verbal puzzle. This also indicates he does not have as good a grasp of language as first impressions indicate.
Avatar n tn I am a mother of a 7 year old boy with ASD, semantic pragmatic disorder, disordered speech, auditory processing problems, auditory memory problems, sensory integration disorder, dyslexia as well as problems with attention and focus. So I know what it is like to have multiple diagnosis that overlap and make it hard to sort out the root cause of difficulties. From your post it sounds like he is trying to communicate, but can't.
Avatar n tn I have no idea why my post landed in the autistic spectrum area. My son is not Autistic, he seems to be very stubborn. :o) There are times when he gets what I'm saying, it depends on what it is. If he likes it he responds but if he wants to do something totally different then he will not respond or will wear out the word NO. I can ask him a question like do you want to go outside and if the answer is Yes then he will repeat what i have said or he'll say Tony outside.
Avatar n tn He also answers no to a lot of questions I ask him. Since he was about a year old he has be in speech and developmental therapy because his doctors says he was delayed. I been having him in therapy for at least 3 years and I took him to different doctors and they still haven't found whats the problem with my son. They say he has some characteristics of autism but they say they have to do more test.
Avatar m tn Is he of normal intelligence? How does he fare at nursery school? What does his mother have to say about his speech? You didn't mention any speech impediments, like stuttering or lisping, only that his speech was limited to one word responses, and that those responses often made no sense. Is it possible that the boy is uncomfortable with you, and behaves oddly because of it?
543250 tn?1214743177 But she does have the language delay. Has a Speech and Language Therapist told you it is delay and not disorder? With delay there is a possibility that it will improve, with disorder that is for life. If she is 8 and using echolalia that suggests a disorder and not delay. And echolalia is present in alot of autistic children, including my son. I would also recommend you read an article by Olga Bogdashina which is on the autism today website.
Avatar f tn You have what is called an "expressive disorder". It may be what is called apraxia. Needless to say you require an immediate dye contrast MRI and a consultation with a facility that has neurologists available to review your disorder. A teaching hospital is a good place to find this expertise. Yes, something is wrong. It may be serious and it may not be. Sometimes these problems are due to destruction of impingement on a specific area of the brain by a tumor.
Avatar f tn Hi Rayyu. I am not a specialist but parent of a child with mild ASD in question - possibility of a mood disorder/ADHD combination. My son makes good eye-contact, communicates failry well, follows instructions very well, friendly with everybody in general, akward with peers, lot better with older and younger children. Most think he is "shy".
Avatar f tn He has not been diagnosed, although they think he has something which is in the spectrum of autism disorder. But does have a speech and language disorder. He ahs the understanding of a 2.5year old! Its very frustrating, he finds it very difficult to understand what im sayin. Its the same for me when i try to understand what he's trying to say. He's slowly getting better since he started school last september.
Avatar f tn Many assume that language issues are associated with autism and they can be------- but speech issues are quite common with sensory kids and speech delays exist on their own. Social skills did not come naturally to my child. We have worked very hard teaching them to him. We did a "social skills camp" last summer. Very helpful.
Avatar n tn It seems to get worse when he is upset. Sometime he will only repeat the last 2 words of a sentance and sometimes he wil repeat the whole sentance. It came on very sudden. Any suggestions?????????
Avatar f tn Ahh, sorry you have this worry for your niece. I would take evaluations further. I would have her evaluated by a developmental pediatrician or an occupational therapist. This could be speech related but speech also plays into other neurological issues. There are three parts of speech that all have to work. First, there is receptive, that she has to take in what is said to her and organize it so she can understand it, comprehend. The next part of speech is expressive speech.
Avatar n tn My son is 4 and a half years old. He has delayed speech. His sentences are one to three words. His doctor had always said he was perfect. Everything else has developed normally and on time. At age 4, his doctor felt that maybe he fell on the spectrum of Autism because of delayed speech and his behavior. I took him to see a speech pathologist. She said he had receptive/expressive disorder. I took him to a neurologist, and after 15 minutes of observation, he decided that it is Autism.
Avatar m tn Usually the first professional to assess any child is the Speech and Language Therapist because most of these children have difficulties with speech and social interaction. If her speech is poor then that could be an avenue you could bring up because all children need sufficient communication and language skills for nursery and school otherwise they won't be able to communicate or understand what is being asked of them.
