Avatar f tn About 4 months in there was no improvement and so they did another evaluation and said that they believed he had Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Which is a motor speech disorder. Once we got that figured out we were able to gear his speech classes for Apraxia and have had amazing results. Before he only said 8 words and now he is up to almost 70.
Avatar f tn You have what is called an "expressive disorder". It may be what is called apraxia. Needless to say you require an immediate dye contrast MRI and a consultation with a facility that has neurologists available to review your disorder. A teaching hospital is a good place to find this expertise. Yes, something is wrong. It may be serious and it may not be. Sometimes these problems are due to destruction of impingement on a specific area of the brain by a tumor.
Avatar f tn Could be. Could also be a speech delay or disorder. I would ask for a referral to a speech language pathologist.
Avatar n tn I am a mother of a 4 year old boy diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder a year ago. I am interested to find out more about Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the targeted therapies as Imy son has this condition in addition to the ASD. My son is currently in specialised unit for ASD kids under 5. He has a lot of initiative to try and speak and communicate with us and his teachers but his speech consist of single syllables that are often inconsistent.
Avatar m tn Have a look at Apraxia, and see if that sounds a possibility? The people that would need to assess him to see if indeed he is on the spectrum, or whether he has a different disorder that gives the appearance of autism are a Speech and Language Therapist and Educational Psychologist. You need them to have experience of diagnosing autistic spectrum disorders, and they should preferably also have experience of other speech disorders such as Apraxia and developmental delays.
Avatar n tn One possibility - developmental apraxia of speech - I might suggest you google this phrase and see if the information remind you of your child. If so, I urge you to seek help immediately - start with your family doctor or pediatrician. This disorder has an excellent prognosis but early intervention/treatment/speech therapy is critical for children (and 22 months is not too young). I wish you the best ...
Avatar n tn Try googling this phrase "developmental apraxia" or "verbal apraxia" or similar phrases to see if your son's speech habitis are similar to those in the descriptions. I know a young child who is five years old and his speech habits are similar to those of your son. He started speech therapy at two years of age but as yet, no formal diagnosis has been given. His parents believe he is apraxic - the speech therapy has helped tremendously and he is doing so well.
Avatar m tn You really need to get him seen by a doctor. Verbal apraxia can also create problems with speech. So can a language processing disorder or an auditory processing disorder. My sister had a form of that, not autism, and had to be in speech and language therapy through 5th grade. She later got straight As in high school and college. Therapy helped immensely.
Avatar n tn Does he or she show any other traits of the autism spectrum? If not, it could be a speech delay, or a speech disorder, like childhood apraxia of speech. This can look like autism, although it is different. My son has both.
Avatar n tn hey thanx for your suggestion.Could you please explain what apraxia of speech means/involves?
1664949 tn?1303075099 He could have apraxia of speech, it's a speech delay where the child has trouble with motor movement. This causes frustration for kids because they know what they want to say, but cannot get the words out. My daughter who has apraxia acts a lot like this. It might be worth looking into.
Avatar m tn Hello, I have apraxia which makes talking on the phone next to impossible. I have to contact a lawyer soon and I was wondering if anyone one knows any good text-to-speech apps for Android that I could use to speak for me? Thank you to anyone who takes the time to answer this.
Avatar n tn I was just wondering do I have my blinder on or does he not have Apraxia? Most people you talk to assume because his speech is delay he must have Autism. I met some children under the umbrella and in so many ways he not like them but he does not fit totally in the typical world.
Avatar f tn It is likely that he will build momentum over the next six months. If not, it would invite an evaluation by a Speech/Language clinician. At this point it is reasonable to say that he is behind the norm in his display of speech and language.
691864 tn?1298919197 My son, 9-yrs old, has PDD (all but one criteria for ASD met), obsessive-compulsive disorder, apraxia of speech (severe), mild/moderate mental retardation, chronic, severe asthma, ventricular septal defect. In spite of his issues, he is a very happy little guy and the light of my life...he has taught us so much.
Avatar n tn It is possible that your child has apraxia of speech. I would look into that.
Avatar m tn I read up on apraxia of speech and I feel like the symptoms are similar. I mess up my words, make substitutions, omissions of syllables, anticipatory errors and the errors are irregular. But the thing is that apraxia can either be developmental or acquired. I used to speak well as a child. My first embarrassing memory when I messed up my speech was when I was 12yrs old. I guess till then speech is more or less developed so I can rule out developmental apraxia(right??
Avatar f tn It is good that the tests done were normal. Speech disorder that comes to mind is an acquired apraxia of speech wherein production of words becomes more difficult with effort. Neurological disorders such as complex migraine and even depression are also possible differentials. Further evaluation may be indicated. If the prescription medication is not helping, inform your doctor for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Your son could be on the spectrum as communication issues are a hallmark sign. OR, he could have sensory integration disorder (apraxia -- not speaking can be neurologically related-- my sensory son has mild dyspraxia which is the movement form of apraxia). You can search this or I'm happy to answer any questions to see if it fits). And some kids also speak late. That your child pretends, plays and is joyful is a good sign! What does his pediatrician say?
Avatar f tn I would also ask your SLP and behavioral pediatrician about verbal apraxia. This is where the child has problems with the motor movements of speech. The child knows what they want to say, but has a hard time actually saying it. And yes, often the child repeats words or phrases similarly to how an autistic child would. My DD has verbal apraxia.
Avatar m tn they are more apt to diagnose things like autistic spectrum disorders, verbal apraxia, sensory integration disorder, and ADHD and other things. Sometimes sensory integration disorder or sensory integration dysfunction (I've heard it called both) can happen separately from autism but if it involves how the child/person processes language -- auditory processing -- it can affect their speech and language learning. But, if she's got other things going on besides the language...
Avatar n tn Met all milestones pretty much on time except talking. He did not talk until 3 yrs old.He has severe speech apraxia and takes speech 3 times a week.We have seen some small improvment.I also know he does not have conversations like a 4 yr old does.He doesnt ever talk about past or future, doesnt talk about ideas or really anything except in the moment type of stuff.Like if a firetruck passes by he might say "firetruck" or "two firetruck".But even this is very hard to understand.
Avatar n tn Slow to make milestones, weight/height always really good. Speech very slow; finally diagnosed w/apraxia @ 3y/o-couldn't speak 10 words @ that point; No one would listen to my worry!! In speech therapy since then. Seemed to be getting better but now @ age 8 his speech hasn't progressed, social interaction/understanding school instruction going sharply downhill. Maybe a comprehension disorder? No tantrums til recently now bursts into tears easily.
Avatar m tn I have a 2 1/2 yr old son who has speech delay and had some intense sensory integration issues. We began speech at 18 months and was diagnosed with apraxia. Fortunately working with him daily and with a therapist he's advanced to near average. His one word ability is awesome and he's beginning his 2 and 3 word sentences. He's gotten over much of his vestibular issues and other tactile ones over time and is near normal.
Avatar m tn The degree of speech impairment that your brother will have could vary from dysarthria or slow, slurred speech due to damage to areas that control muscles of speech mechanism, apraxia of speech where there is difficulty in saying words correctly in a consistent manner. This deficit is evaluated immediately after the injury by a neurologist.
1714540 tn?1326830479 There are other things to add into the mix as to issues your son may be having. He may have motor planning issues (apraxia---- speech/ dyspraxia--- motor control) and this could be due to sensory integration disorder (which my son has). It is different than autism but often present WITH autism. They may have some social skill issues but it is slightly different than an autistic child. I agree that the wetting in and of itself isn't a sign of autism----- he is only 4.
