He has been diagnosed with ADHD and has a few other problems like fine motor skills. About a year ago he started repeating his speech. Whatever he says, he repeats to himself under his breath. It's a constant behaviour pattern. It doesn't seem to be a problem but his friends have noticed it and comment on it. Anyone else have a similar experience ?

The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.

However my son is very affectionate. It is not true that those on the autistic spectrum are unaffectionate. Some don't know how to show affection, others do. My son hugs me and tells me he loves me.

But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
If your son is repeatedly asking questions and needs you to repeat in order to understand, then he could be having some hearing loss—maybe brought about by the beads stuck in his ears. Hearing loss can delay speech development. Hence this needs to be first identified and then corrected. Please consult an ENT doctor and an audiologist. Take care!
I don't believe speech therapy is necessary for him, he may just be a quieter type of child who takes in alot from his environment, which isn't such a bad thing. For now, just do as you would normally and keep communicating with him. Encourage him to communicate with others aswell, which i'm sure you already do. I myself was a real quiet kid and wouldn't speak to anyone and was extremely shy, i just wanted to do my own thing and was happy to do so.

Before I talk about depresion which can definitely effect speech, Im going to say there are a lot of serious neurological causes of speech problems; if this is a possibiity you must get it checked. Maybe you could try either printing some material from the Internet on normal speech development of children at given ages, or get a book at the library on toddler development and see if milestones are given, and show them. Do you think he doesn't hear, or is it simply that he is not seeming to comprehend language? If you think it might be his hearing, also see what you can find of symptoms of hearing issues in small children.
In several areas of his development (speech/language, impulse control, social) he is not keeping pace with what would be expected of his age. It would be wise to arrange a developmenatl evaluation. If you live in an area where you have access to a pediatric hospital, particularly a so-called teaching hospital, this should not be difficult to arrange.
