Common Questions and Answers about Speech development red flags

speech

Avatar n tn It is good that you have been accessing services for your son and that you recognized early that he had delayed speech. A diagnosis of autism involves deficits in social interactions (no eye contact), delayed language and rigidity in routines or perseverative behaviors that are hard to interrupt.
470885 tn?1326329037 To make a long story short..... DS will be 3 at the beginning of October. At his 2 year appointment with our GP, we mentioned that we had noticed that his speech wasn't quite on par with other kids his age (fewer words, not yet stringing 2 words together). He sent us to an audiologist for a hearing test (which checked out fine) and referred us to a local children's centre where they deal with all sorts of behavioral/developmental issues.
1644096 tn?1300989310 we have been to a pediatric already he as a speech problem in therapy for that, in early childhood development as well for school. Avatar f tn Repetitive behavior are characteristic of autism but are not the only red flags. If you are still concerned I would suggest that you go try to identify a hospital in an urban area where they specialize in diagnosis of children who present developmental delays. A comprehensive evaluation by a team of specialists will result in diagnostic information as well as treatment recommendations. You can then take these recommendations to your local public school.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
187666 tn?1331173345 All went well but I noticed shortly after we left the office, the one side of her face was drooping. There were some other things going on that seemed like red flags to me (for stroke) but they could have been related to the shot. Has anyone seen such a marked response to a shot like this?
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar n tn If you live in the US, you should look in to your state's 0 to 3 program which is government subsidized. Many state's it is called First Steps, but other states have different names, so it might be different for you. They help with language delays. 3 words at age 2 is way behind in language and she would qualify for speech therapy at the least. There probably is a reason for her screaming and crying, but she can't communicate that reason to you.
Avatar f tn - he often leans his forehead against things for a moment - walls, objects, my leg, etc - he will lean in and do this and then be on his way. - he makes eye contact about 50% of the time and same goes for responding to his name.
Avatar f tn well, some of those behaviors are red flags for autism HOWEVER....he would need to be evaluated by a child behavior expert, or someone who can identify and treat autism if he does in fact have it. autism is not a specific disease....it's actually a very broad term encompassing a lot of different behaviors, symptoms, and disorders.
Avatar n tn There is something called the CHAT questionnaire that parents are sometimes asked to complete in the UK as it has alot of questions that are red flags regarding autism spectrum disorders. I'm sorry if this post makes you more concerned. But if you feel something isn't right or is maybe delayed then you need to get the ball rolling asap. I also want to ask you if he has very bad tantrums or get very upset apparently for no reason?
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
Avatar n tn I have a 4 year old daughter and I'm worried that she may have a development problem. She can't focus on one thing for more than a couple of minute and she can't answer a question when asked. Anytime that any adult asks her somthing she only says off the wall things. She has also started being really rude to people but never me. I am worried that I need to get her tested before it gets worse.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar f tn ve been experiencing is not how a neurological condition like MS typically first presents, a symptoms pattern that spreads, all over, all peripheral limbs, rapid development of different types of symptoms, short time frame of weeks to months etc are all red flags pointing away from neurological conditions like MS!
Avatar n tn In several areas of his development (speech/language, impulse control, social) he is not keeping pace with what would be expected of his age. It would be wise to arrange a developmenatl evaluation. If you live in an area where you have access to a pediatric hospital, particularly a so-called teaching hospital, this should not be difficult to arrange.
Avatar f tn The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.
Avatar f tn My 2 year old grandson is speech delayed but we are concerned about autism. He tries to say @ 50 words, but not clearly. Recently, he has started to point at things of interest and will point when asked at certain pictures in books. He smiles at others. He understands and obeys simple commands. He sometimes, but not always responds to his name . He bites and head bangs occasionally. He shows interest in other kids, makes good eye contact with his mother but not so much with others.
1355876 tn?1277221311 Certainly it was not a complete surprise------------- or maybe you did not realize some of what you are seeing were red flags. To be worried? Well sure. That is not a pleasant thing to hear. However, it is the first step in correcting an issue to give your child the happiest and best life they can have. Early intervention even for a small issue let alone a large one can do so much to help a child. So it is good news that something is going to be addressed.
Avatar f tn Yes, repeated infections can have an impact on hearing. Your son's development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
Avatar m tn Likewise, some scientists have suggested that some forms of cancer could come from the cancerous development of tissue stem cells. In other words, stem cells present in tissues and specific to the tissue where they reside could at times go awry and lead to cancer formation. But again, this has nothing to do with stem cells in the bone marrow.
Avatar n tn Well it couldn't hurt to get him screened. If he has some of the red flags, he could get help for them. I am the father of 3 boys and the youngest (3) is autistic. He had the red flags too, and a friend tried to convinence me that I had the problem. But I am happy I got my son screened, now he gets speech therapy, and soon occupational therapy. It won't hurt him to get a diagnoses.
