Avatar m tn I am studying phonetics and would like to know what effect removal of the epiglottis has on speech. Especially vowels and rhotics. Thank you.
Avatar f tn I think names starting with B, D, F, J, M, N, P, R and T all seem to flow reasonably well (just due to positioning of tongue and palate - I'm a speech pathologist and I like to play with sounds - e.g.
443968 tn?1288612689 All righty friends, I wonder how are your babies doing on their language development. James cooes a lot, he does not babbles much thought, he says ahhhhhggg, mahhhhh, mahhh, bahh things like that but mostly he makes a lot of squealing loud noises, like grhhhhhh, grhhhh, gihhhhhhh, gehhhhh, arghhhhh, arghhhhhhh, grohhhhhhh. and he sounds a lot like a singing bird mostly when he wakes up in the morning and he is looking at his mobile friends.
Avatar f tn I am desperate an seeking help - I've seen several doctors with no current diagnosis and was told by the last that I should probably see a speech therapist. I've been dealing with this problem for about 7 years but it has gotten worse over the last 2 years, it has greatly affected my ability to answer the phone and talk at work, once I get the words out I'm ok but my voice sounds like I'm straining and out of breath.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
Avatar m tn I don't know why at 2 1/2, but when my son began elongating his vowels at about 18 months, I read up on it. The main thing all the experts said was not to treat it as though you notice. In other words, if a child does a word irregularly (either by drawing out the vowel or by repeating the first or last syllable, or whatever), one is just supposed to react as though she did the word right, and continue the conversation normally.
281565 tn?1295982683 I have no energy what so ever. The thought of moving seems so overwhelming right now. Then to top it off, tonight my speech has gone wonky. Slurred and stuttering and having a hard time finding words. It's been almost a year since I've had it this bad. Please help me find my speech. I really need it for my job. If you find it give it heck and tell it to get on home. Hopefully if I get some rest tonight, I'll be more up to responding to posts again.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
667445 tn?1230750538 Yes U should look into speech therapy, but therapy in general...make sure his hearing is ok......there r forms of autisum that can case speech delays...look up aspbergers (sp?).......I hope ur son responds to whichever therapy u choose.
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
Avatar n tn I have a 4 year old daughter and I'm worried that she may have a development problem. She can't focus on one thing for more than a couple of minute and she can't answer a question when asked. Anytime that any adult asks her somthing she only says off the wall things. She has also started being really rude to people but never me. I am worried that I need to get her tested before it gets worse.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar n tn In several areas of his development (speech/language, impulse control, social) he is not keeping pace with what would be expected of his age. It would be wise to arrange a developmenatl evaluation. If you live in an area where you have access to a pediatric hospital, particularly a so-called teaching hospital, this should not be difficult to arrange.
Avatar f tn The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.
Avatar n tn My son is 26 months old and is not talking. I know and understand that every child is different, and some are late talkers. But he doesn't even babble really. He says dada, and he says ow, he doesn't make a G sound, doesn't say mama and I am the one who he is always clinging too lol. He says his vowels fairly well...."ooooooh" "wow" "ow" Doesn't make C sounds, he just doesn't even babble.
Avatar f tn Yes, repeated infections can have an impact on hearing. Your son's development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
Avatar n tn He also uses delayed echolalia in his speech. And he has Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder. So his speech development is typically autistic. However my son is very affectionate. It is not true that those on the autistic spectrum are unaffectionate. Some don't know how to show affection, others do. My son hugs me and tells me he loves me. Look at the diagnostic criteria, and if you still have concerns I would ask for a referal.
Avatar n tn If you are concerned about this, discuss it with your pediatrician and perhaps they will refer you to a speech pathologist for a speech evaluation. The best thing that seemed to work with my two boys is that I would speak slowly and have them look at my mouth on words they had difficulty with. I'd also do games like put on music and make crazy, silly faces and freeze them (turning music on and off). That works mouth and face muscles.
Avatar n tn I do not think a migraine can turn into a brain tumor, but a tumor may cause migraines....so get it checked to be sure u r dealing with migraines and nothing else.
Avatar n tn This is an article that I found through Google about Meg scans. According to a press release in Newswise, a new study from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia may have pinpointed a tool to diagnose autism. According to the article: Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) process sound and language a fraction of a second slower than children without ASDs, and measuring magnetic signals that mark this delay may become a standardized way to diagnose autism....
Avatar n tn He complained of headaches, had slurred speech at times and a constant tongue throbbing thing for about 2 weeks during that time frame. Is it possible that this abscess may have been developing and causing his odd impulsive behavior then already. he is facing a 5 year felony charge for a stupid stupid action and for the massive area of the left frontal lobe that was compromised i cannot imagine that it could not be considered a factor in his behavior.
Avatar f tn (CNN) -- Parents of children with special needs are demanding an apology from conservative political pundit Ann Coulter for tweeting after Tuesday's foreign policy debate that she approved of "Romney's decision to be kind and gentle to the retard." It appeared to be a response to critiques of Mitt Romney's debate performance, but it wasn't the first time Coulter used the "the r-word" during this election season.
Avatar f tn , a big part of the question they had was about delayed speech) and I found a website (below) at the National Institutes of Health that has a section on typical speech and language development. It includes checklists that help you determine if your child is “on track” with communication development as well as definitions and some explanations of potential speech and language developmental problems and what to do about them.
