Common Questions and Answers about Speech development of infants

speech

Avatar n tn She speaks fluent gibberish, talks to invisible friends and pets, plays with her toys, and when other children are around she attempts regular speech. Should we be worried, she seems frustrated by her lack of ability to communicate with us.
Avatar n tn they are all fluent in each one of them and have never, to the best of my knowledge, suffered any type of language development or speech issues. you should inform the teacher of her ability to speak a foreign tongue and just allow the daycare to use one language all day and maybe you can continue to use the mother tongue at home. give her extra time to begin to speak out clearly in these two languages. she has more to learn than other children.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
Avatar n tn Treatment begins with a thorough diagnostic evaluation, including an assessment of motor and sensory skills, balance and coordination, mental status, reflexes, and functioning of the nerves. Diagnostic tests such as a CT scan of the brain, an EMG to evaluate nerve and muscle function, or an EEG to measure electrical activity in the brain may also be necessary.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar n tn These are key to communication and speech. Speech is made up of three parts--------- expressive (her ability to communicate with you), receptive (your ability to communicate with her) and articulation (her ability to say the words). All three must be working in order for effective speech and communication. I would definately address this with your pediatrician and work on some referrels to a hearing specialist to make sure she is hearing and a speech pathologist to evaluate speech.
Avatar n tn CNS trauma and infection are perhaps the most common cause of hypotonia, both in infants and in children. Trauma to the brain may occur prenatally (before birth), perinatally (around the time of birth), or postnatally (after birth). Prenatal CNS damage may be caused by maternal and fetal infections, diseases, problems with the placenta or umbilical cord, or maternal use of harmful substances such as alcohol or certain drugs.
Avatar f tn When she turned 2, I had concerns. There is a difference between speech and receptive language. When there is a lack of receptive language (i.e. understanding directions, responding to their name, etc), then there is usually more concern. I didn't know there was a difference before my daughter turned 2. At 17 months, I wouldn't worry too much. Some things speech therapists do for kids with just speech delays, is repeat a word lots of times.
Avatar n tn As crawling is associated with brain development you could buy some of those fabric tubes for him to use when he is a bit older. Just enjoy your children and stop worrying!!! At the end of the day if your child is/isn't on the spectrum there is nothing you can do about it and worrying makes no difference to the situation apart from making you ill.
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
Avatar f tn This is a common occurrence among infants because their central nervous systems are in such an early phase of development. It does not invite alarm. Of course, you should confer with his pediatrician. We always suggest people do this and not rest with posting a queastion on this Forum or on any other interne site.
Avatar n tn I have read a few things about ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome and she has some of the symptoms of both. What should I do?
Avatar n tn In several areas of his development (speech/language, impulse control, social) he is not keeping pace with what would be expected of his age. It would be wise to arrange a developmenatl evaluation. If you live in an area where you have access to a pediatric hospital, particularly a so-called teaching hospital, this should not be difficult to arrange.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar f tn Hi, my son is almost 3.5 yo. He was diagnosed with speech delay 6 moths ago, so far he finished 6 weeks Intervention program and 6 weeks of speech therapy. He's doing great, now he has around 100 words and likes to sing songs. He has troubles expressing his emotions and wishes, and does not play with kids in preschool. He's great with fine and gross motor skills, really good climber, knows all letters, counting till 100, likes to write numbers and letters, has good eye contact.
Avatar n tn m not sure what drugs or how much the mother did while pregnant but am told meth, zanax, marijuana, and opiates were used extensively especially during the first 4-5 months of her pregnancy. His development appears to be on target for now except for a mild expressive speech delay. I'm wondering what the research says regarding risks for learning disabilities as he gets older. Any info you can give me will be very helpful.
8004667 tn?1408302108 Breastfeeding is an unequalled way of providing ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; it is also an integral part of the reproductive process with important implications for the health of mothers. As a global public health recommendation, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health.
Avatar f tn Yes, repeated infections can have an impact on hearing. Your son's development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
Avatar n tn Prior to this there were other signs of irrational behavior, childish kind of stuff, just not normal for him. He rapidly declined in his behavior, becoming more reclusive, depressed and basically shutting himself off from the family. We thought it was a reaction to the crime, embarassment, stress, etc. He complained of headaches, had slurred speech at times and a constant tongue throbbing thing for about 2 weeks during that time frame.
Avatar f tn ) Certainly some of the behaviors that you describe may or may not be indicative of the early signs of an ASD (remember that, particularly at a very young age, there is quite a bit of variability in growth and development). Based on what you describe, however, I would not say that you are being “over concerned.” Below are several websites with information about ASD. You may find it helpful to review these sites to see if you think you need to take your son in for further assessment.
Avatar n tn t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?
Avatar n tn However, usually, the cause is excess intake of milk and liquid (juices, soups, carbonated drinks etc). This gives them the required energy, and hence they do not take the pains of chewing and eating. Hence, first you will need to check if this is the cause, and then reduce this. Secondly, diverting their attention to stories, cartoons, miming etc while feeding often works. Third, you need to find out if he has any feeding difficulties. Fourth, you need to bring variations in food.
594330 tn?1219167188 I am worried sick about his lack of comprehension and am looking for answers. Today I had a child development specialist and a speech pathologist observe him and thespeech pathologist said she was more concerned with his lack of command following than use of the language. I don't know if maybe there are things I can try to do or change to help him reach this level of cognitve and communitive development.
Avatar f tn Idrc about the smart part but does it really help with the babys brain development i just want to know if its true because i wanted to do it. have any of you did it nd seen anything for those who've had their babies already?
Avatar f tn My granddaughter is 3 yrs., 9 mos. She is still not potty trained despite consistency in putting her on the potty. She screams and covers her ears when you mention it's time to go on the potty. She also does not seem to know how to interact with other children. She will say hi to them, but if asked a question, doesn't answer or moves to something else. Her speech is fine, she just doesn't use it much If I ask her what she did at the playground, I get no response.
Avatar n tn You need to get him evaluated by a child development specialist or psychologist, figure out if something is really wrong and take care of it. Do not put yourself down. He probably has ADHD or he might just be spirited. In general, three year old boys are not easy. I have two kids. One was easy and the other was NOT. If I knew that my third child was like the easy one, I would have a third child. Since the odds did not favor me, I did not have a third.
