Speech development in two year olds

Common Questions and Answers about Speech development in two year olds

speech

Avatar f tn Yes, repeated infections can have an impact on hearing. Your son's development of speech/language is definitiely delayed, and this warants evaluation by a Speech/Language therapist. But an audiological evaluation is crucial, because it is possible that the delay in speech is secondary to hearing loss.
Avatar n tn Give him some time to respond to the therapy (at least a few months, I’d imagine) and then perhaps ask for a re-assessment. If his speech development is later assessed to be typical, and he is not showing any other signs of delay, then you can rest easy. If however, he continues to struggle, then you haven’t lost any time in getting him some help and might consider pursuing further services for him. Good luck to you and your family.
342647 tn?1291107933 I worked in a room full of two year olds, and I agree with Joy that your daughter sounds like she's developing her speech normally. Like Joy, I think that if your daughter is older (3 or 4) and having problems with stuttering and pronunciation then you should get her assessed. My friend has a 4 year old who I still have trouble understanding. She always has to "translate" for me.
470885 tn?1326329037 I actually had one year olds join the class towards the end of the day, and the little girl in the one year old class would sit still for an entire thirty minute video of the wiggles, while all the boys one year olds and two year olds ran around the room.
Avatar m tn If that is off, then a speech eval. is in order. But honestly, both of my boys outgrew speech issues. They were primarily articulation, as I said, and now at 6 and 8, we have no issues.
Avatar f tn The overall profile you describe is not typical of two-year-olds. Had you asked in what drection you should turn, I would have suggested Speech/Language evaluation and Developmental evaluation. Both of those interventions are already in the works, so he is on the right course. Nothing you describe indicates any serious condition along the Pervasive Developmental Disorder spectrum. Rather, he appears to show some general developmenatl lags, all of which can likely show progress.
Avatar n tn What you are describing isn’t uncommon in typically developing 2-yr olds and there can be quite a range in development across a range of areas. Also, tantruming and other sorts of problem behavior may be more likely if your son isn’t yet able to communicate effectively given the speech delay. All that being said, having him assessed for autism-spectrum disorders would be a good idea. In any case, absolutely pursue early intervention for any and all delays whether they be motor or speech.
Avatar n tn If you live in the states, he could not be in kindergarten yet but more of a preschool type of setting. The attention span of a 3 year old developmentally would be pretty short. A preschool curriculum is usually set up into very short time slots with 10 minutes here, 5 minutes there and maybe 20 minutes on the playground. This is about all a three year old can handle at their stage of development. Not listening again is a common problem with 3 year olds.
Avatar n tn she has started babbling in our mother tongue but will her speech be delayed as people at day care dont speak our mother tongue or dont even understand it/

Avatar n tn t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?
Avatar m tn we have a speech and language disorder forum on Med Help you may also find some good answers there .
Avatar m tn Try the Mayo clinic and also, though I believe the chances are slim to none you may want to check some research by physicians doing research in nuerological development, MS, and Alzheimers. Anything that may be used as treatment is likely to experimental. Also if you have a syndrome name write pharmacuetical companies doing research.
Avatar f tn My grandson is two years old and his mother lives in california, his father, my son, lives in Texas. Last year we had my grandson in Texas for 4 months and this year we will have him for 6 months. My question is this: Are these long visits detramental to my grandson? Is this unhealth for him to not see his mother for six months and then not see his father for 6 months? What do you recommend? I am very worried about my grandson's development.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
Avatar n tn My son is 4 yrs old.He was born only three weeks early and was healthy.Met all milestones pretty much on time except talking. He did not talk until 3 yrs old.He has severe speech apraxia and takes speech 3 times a week.We have seen some small improvment.I also know he does not have conversations like a 4 yr old does.He doesnt ever talk about past or future, doesnt talk about ideas or really anything except in the moment type of stuff.
Avatar n tn My two year old will be three in October is still not talking...I mean she can say a few words but not enough to hardly communicate with us. She is the youngest of four. At first I thought maybe we were babying her too much but her doctor wants me to have her tested for Autism. I am worried. I then started noticeing other "signs" from a booklet my dr gave me. She is really attached to her blanket...won't hardly let it out of her sight.
Avatar f tn I found the info below concerning Muscular Dystrophy... it has a lot more detailed things to look for in 1-3 year olds who may have musc. dystrophy.... I don't know what else they may be looking for... wish I could help more. Said a prayer for your friend and her son. Re: Muscular Dystrophy Most affected boys show the first signs of mobility problems between the ages of 1 and 3 years.
Avatar f tn My two year old son is struggling with behaviors. He can be very violent, choking siblings, knocks chairs over, bites, hits, kicks, screams, throws things, gets into to everything. He is constantly on the go and doesn't stop moving until he falls asleep (litterally). He shows no intrest in the TV as I have tried using the Disney Channel to get him to sit..it didn't work. My son also does not talk other than saying mom and dad. He does not mimic any words nor does he attempt to mimic.
Avatar f tn My granddaughter is 3 yrs., 9 mos. She is still not potty trained despite consistency in putting her on the potty. She screams and covers her ears when you mention it's time to go on the potty. She also does not seem to know how to interact with other children. She will say hi to them, but if asked a question, doesn't answer or moves to something else. Her speech is fine, she just doesn't use it much If I ask her what she did at the playground, I get no response.
Avatar n tn Now, in spite of that, this child may display some delay in his language development. An evaluation by a Speech/Language professional is in order.
727792 tn?1231227009 ve tried everything to comfort him and he just screams and hollars for no reason he can be fine one min and just going crazy another i am really concerned b/c i have also a two year old daughter that is praticiallly speaking in complete sentences and has been for a couple of months and it botheres me b/c he says wds but speaks very slowly and softly so a lot of ppl dont think he can talk and he is behind his speaking with other kids his age group what should r can i do plz help i am taking him t
Avatar n tn Based on what you describe though---------- he really sounds like he is doing fine except in the area of articulation which is not uncommon in three year olds. If you are concerned about this, discuss it with your pediatrician and perhaps they will refer you to a speech pathologist for a speech evaluation. The best thing that seemed to work with my two boys is that I would speak slowly and have them look at my mouth on words they had difficulty with.
Avatar n tn My daughter is three and a half years old and she barely talks. She'll say "juice" "thanks" and a bunch of other things and has a few phrases like "what happened?", but she isn't talking in sentences. I've tried many things like flash cards (she blazes right through them) and making her repeat one word at a time to make a complete sentence and basically encouraging her to talk as much as possible.
Avatar n tn Hi. I like your usage of the word quirky as that sounds like what she is. I understand what you are saying. Something feels a little different to you about your child and you are worried about her. That is being a good parent in my opinion. I had a quirky kid also who turned out to have sensory integration disorder. Now it is hard when they are three because there is such a broad range of 'normal'.
