Avatar n tn He was just evaluated by this school as being delayed in every area except gross motor. And it seems all anyone at school can mention is "PDD". He does not have repetitive speech, is not excelled in any area, plays appropriately with toys, and demonstrates "shared attention". He is not overly sensitive to sensation and has no "unusual" fears. He will run or hop throughout the house which seems repetitive, but he seems to be burning energy.
Avatar f tn That phrase comes from Walt Disneys the Aristocats and is what the butler says to the cats because he wants them out of the way. So, autistic children can be very clever in the way they put together their speech. I know that I could do it like my son does. So your child's speech will improve. But he will need input from Speech and Language Therapy and may need assessing by other professionals to see if he needs other supports in school.
574101 tn?1245537020 thank you he has a hearing delay hearing now at about 80% he really has only two difficulties speech and very hyper ( dr.
Avatar n tn If he has typical speech development then that would usually rule out autism, but might mean Aspergers. But those with Aspergers although their speech is considered 'normal' may still have problems processing language, or may have literal interpretation of language. They can sometimes have a strange tone of voice or emphasis the wrong part of words, or they may have an accent.
Avatar f tn The center did an eval of him, but said sometimes the results can be skewed because the test was administered while other children were in the room. They had his emotional development at 11 months and cognitive at 12 months.
Avatar m tn Usually the first professional to assess any child is the Speech and Language Therapist because most of these children have difficulties with speech and social interaction. If her speech is poor then that could be an avenue you could bring up because all children need sufficient communication and language skills for nursery and school otherwise they won't be able to communicate or understand what is being asked of them.
Avatar m tn Different doctors are giving different theories about his condition. There are some schools for autistic children run by parents who have such children themselves. The medical evaluation can go as far as labeling the child as autistic. A child doesn't even start getting help before he or she turns 3. We are not that affluent that we can take our child abroad for evaluation. Sometimes he bangs his head on the ground so hard that it really makes us feel helpless.
Avatar n tn He is currently in speech therapy 3 times a week. He likes to stare at my chandelier and spin around. I saw a development specialist and she said that he is showing signs of austism. and No one can tell me what causes it? What can I do? and where do I stand? Somoene should be able to tell me why my son was talking at 15-18 months and suddenlly stopped?
Avatar n tn s just starting a little early with the tantrums. I guess with autistic children, the why of the tantrums is a clue. My daughter had a meltdown when we rearranged the furniture in our house. We had to move it back to original position. She has meltdowns when anything in her routine is changed. Autistic children generally like routines and things to be the same in their day to day activities. Seriously, if you have concerns, address them with the pediatrician.
168006 tn?1241012961 My son had BIG time speech regression also. He started developing his speech normally and around 18 months he completely stopped speaking. We had him evaluated for speech, autism, even his hearing and we ended up getting speech therapy for him. He had other autistic "signs" like he had a hard time dealing if something was out of place, he liked patterns and was just weird for lack of a better word.
Avatar n tn Yes, there are some autistic children who may need assistance their entire lives. I have seen some autistic children in the type of programs your child is in who progress very quickly from the start, some who don't progress at all and then begin to progress later on, and some who do not show signs of progress for many years and may need therapy for the rest of their life. As a mother of an autistic child, you are doing great!
Avatar m tn Follow the above advise. A Speech Therapist is responsible for speech and language development as well as social interaction and play skills. You would be wanting one that has experience of speech delays associated with hearing loss, as well as developmental issues. If you also google to find similar characteristics between those on the autistic spectrum and those with hearing difficulties you will see that there are some similar difficulties.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar n tn t talk till he was four and still has a very hard time comunicating with you. He does not interact with other children unless he has known you for a LONG time. He HATES change and gets very frustrated when you change his schedual. He use to hit, bit, and bang his head on the floor when he got frustrated but now he flaps his arms and screams or bites his lip.
304970 tn?1331425994 Does he listen to you well and comprehend simple instructions? I new my son was autistic when he was 18 months cause of speech delay and repetitive behaviour like spinning things and opening and closing things....
Avatar m tn Hello, My son Geoff is almost 5 now and was formally diagnosed as high functioning autistic when he was almost three. His development and behaviour sounds very similar to yours at the same age. Since learning of his condition, I have also discovered there are other characteristics assessed when a diagnosis of autism is confirmed. As a three year old, Geoff's head was at the large end of the scale for his age, although he is now starting to "grow into it".
Avatar n tn My son is 39 months old. He has been seen by our local Regional Center to be evaluated for hand flapping. Long story short..he was dismissed at 3 after speech therapy (for eye contact) and OT. They say he is progressing fine. He is in preschool, does great. Very social, great at imaginative play. The only red flag I have ever had with him is hand flapping. He has flapped since he was very young, like 6 months when watching a ceiling fan.
Avatar f tn I would have him evaluated at the doctor. If they are concerned with his development they will likely give you a referral to a specialist. Remember YOU are your child's biggest advocate.
Avatar f tn s quite and does not particpate in class he can read and write but his comprehension is not there and his only friends are our 8 other children and he follows the 4 year old and does what ever he tells him to do, he does not understand that he's the oldest .We have seen two doctors once when he was 4 and again when he turned 6 and everyone says he's fine, he's just a little slower then others ( well yeah I know that much but WHY) Please help me figure out what is wrong with my son?
Avatar n tn He also uses delayed echolalia in his speech. And he has Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder. So his speech development is typically autistic. However my son is very affectionate. It is not true that those on the autistic spectrum are unaffectionate. Some don't know how to show affection, others do. My son hugs me and tells me he loves me. Look at the diagnostic criteria, and if you still have concerns I would ask for a referal.
Avatar m tn My elder son is now 3 years and 4 months. His speech development is as slow as a kid who is 18 months to 24 months old. He started speaking 2 to 3 word sentences when he reached 3 years. He can identify pictures of family and relatives. Still he speaks some words which are quite meaningless. He has a few symptoms like slapping his hand on the face or hitting his head on the floor when he gets angry. He has been very interested in TV ads since 6 to 7 months of age.
770551 tn?1305578901 At school he can not sit still and often goes into what we call his wild man, attacking other children, ripping things off the walls. He is O.K. with one on one but horrible in a group. Even with other children will only play with them one at a time. He can never tell me the names of anyone he's played with. He walks on his tippy toes and drools. Has no problem academic wise except for not paying attention and some under developed small motor skills that effect writing neatly.
Avatar f tn s, extreme food aversions and the fact that parents of autistic children noticed your son. I can pick out other autistic children 9 times out of 10. A lot of times autism will have a co-diagnosis of ADD or ADHD. My daughter is 13 and still will only eat chicken nuggets, PB&J, hot dogs, canned lunches, french fries and macaroni and cheese. It's actually a sensory problem. Talk to your pediatrician and request to have your son tested.
Avatar m tn My 2.3 year old daughter has no speech and doesn't follow my instructions. She speaks words which are meaningless for her like tatatata, papapa, kakaka. Earlier she used to wave her hand when said bye and clap her hands when asked to clap but now she doesn't. She flaps her hand when excited. She has good eye contact with known persons and very bad with unknown. She loves looking at other toddlers but donot play with them.
Avatar n tn Now he will begin to have a 45 minute class once a week at the school where he will be able to interact with other children his age. When he is outside playing with the children in the neighborhood, he just follows them around and repeats everything they say to him. He doesn't answer a question when asked, he just repeats what was said and there are a few times he will answer but it's not consistent at all.
