Common Questions and Answers about Speech development activities for toddlers

speech

Avatar f tn Hi I'm a worried parent, my 2 year 4 month old toddler hasn't spoken a word yet and doesn't appear to understand what I'm saying beyond, "no", "don't do that", "lets go", "go to bed", "go outside". She doesn't point, when she's looking for food, she leads me by the hand and takes me into the kitchen where she looks up at the press for food.
Avatar n tn com/Materials_Exchange.html. That site has many different activities for many levels. some of them are picture prompts that encourage the child to speak in sentences. You point to each picture and have her repeat it. but most importantly, speak to her pediatrician. you might also be able to contact your school district and inquire about early intervention.
293420 tn?1243142938 There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this. I'm surprised that there is not one already!
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
Avatar n tn It is good that you have been accessing services for your son and that you recognized early that he had delayed speech. A diagnosis of autism involves deficits in social interactions (no eye contact), delayed language and rigidity in routines or perseverative behaviors that are hard to interrupt.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar f tn Believe is or not, it is quite normal for toddlers to bang their head when frustrated or tired. My daughter did the same. I would just tell her over and over to not bang her head against the wall because she would hurt herself. I was beginning to wonder if she even felt pain and my uncle asked me the question also. Eventually, it stopped. I just tried to redirect her. Get him interested in something else.
Avatar m tn Hi. I think it can be really hard on a little guy to go back and forth between two homes. Some of what you are seeing may be due to that. It is really hard to have one place you are at MOST of the time and then go to another place. Hopefully you have a good relationship with his mother.
Avatar m tn This record in the awake state shows no definite abnormlity. Activities are within normal limit for age and state of the child. No epilepty form discharge is seen during any time of the recording. We are trying to get Super Nuthera. It is not available here. Can you give us some advice on how we could help him deal with his tantrums, aggressive self injurious behaviours? He feels pain after he bangs his head. It is evident from his facial expression. But he is unable to control himself.
Avatar n tn Give him some time to respond to the therapy (at least a few months, I’d imagine) and then perhaps ask for a re-assessment. If his speech development is later assessed to be typical, and he is not showing any other signs of delay, then you can rest easy. If however, he continues to struggle, then you haven’t lost any time in getting him some help and might consider pursuing further services for him. Good luck to you and your family.
Avatar m tn Hello. I have a 3 year old son with autism and although every child with autism is different, comparing your son to my son, I see a few similarities but nothing so severe as the behaviors my son had at that age. It could be that he has some developmental delays, or maybe some sensory processing delays. I would definitely speak to the pediatrician about all the things you have noticed.
Avatar f tn If his receptive language is slow, then directins would be hard for him. As his speech is developing, pay attention to the areas of speech -------- receptive, expressive and articulation. Even a slight issue can cause things to be harder for him. I'd try to remain patient. As he does get closer to two, it is natural to test boundaries and authority and to try to gain independence.
Avatar f tn beasagni, it's good that you're reaching out for help here, but it might be more helpful when you get the diagnosis for him. Also, since you have an older child with significant developmental delays, it might be helpful for you to post in forums that related to his/her diagnoses also. God Bless you.
Avatar n tn Hi there, I was reading your post to find out about television watching. Watching a lot of TV will hinder children from talking. My son has high functioning autism. He was developmentally delayed in his speech and gross motor skills. There was a news report that when babies/toddlers are watching "Baby Einstein" they are delayed in their speech. I thought all the baby shows were good for him, but it turned out they are not.
Avatar n tn My 4 year old grandson has a good vocabulary and pronunciation skills yet he cannot put a sentence together in the way the words should be arranged. His fine motor skills are not good and he doesn't want to be engaged in activities that could help them without forcing the issue. My question - does the part of the brain that controls the fine motor skills have anything to do with the part used to make complete sentences?
Avatar n tn We have recently been given our 21/2 y/o grandson by Div of Family Serv. after they removed him from the home due to finding meth within his reach. I'm not sure what drugs or how much the mother did while pregnant but am told meth, zanax, marijuana, and opiates were used extensively especially during the first 4-5 months of her pregnancy. His development appears to be on target for now except for a mild expressive speech delay.
Avatar f tn My seven year old son had speech delay. He is in Ist grade and going for speech therepy in school . He had beads stuck in her both ears for almost 2.5 years, my poor baby,we were ignorant. Now also when we or my friends ask him some thing, he says "what" at least 2-3 times. When I asked why we have to repeat question, he said " he doesn't understand what we asaked". We didn't do any tests. We are bilingual family but speak only english with him.
Avatar f tn The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.
Avatar n tn I have a 4 year old daughter and I'm worried that she may have a development problem. She can't focus on one thing for more than a couple of minute and she can't answer a question when asked. Anytime that any adult asks her somthing she only says off the wall things. She has also started being really rude to people but never me. I am worried that I need to get her tested before it gets worse.
