148588 tn?1465778809 Even with the surge in new projects, energy from such renewable sources as wind, solar and water accounted for only about a tenth of total U.S. power generation last year. Still, the U.S. leads the world in wind energy with about 48,800 utility-scale turbines operating across the country, generating enough electricity to power about 20 million homes. By 2030, the Energy Department estimates wind will provide a fifth of the nation’s electricity.
535822 tn?1443976780 Wind farms along with solar power and other alternative energy sources, are supposed to produce the energy of tomorrow..Much evidence indicates that their countless whirring fan blades produce something else: blank spots that distort radar readings. Now government agencies that depend on radar---such as the National Defence dept and the weather service are scrambling and spending Millions to preserve their detection abilities... here we go yet again ....
148588 tn?1465778809 5 percent of the state’s electric power come from renewable sources like solar and wind by 2025. Twenty-nine states have established similar standards that call for 10 percent or more in renewable power. These states can now anticipate well-financed campaigns to eliminate these targets or scale them back. The coal producers’ motivation is clear: They see solar and wind energy as a long-term threat to their businesses.
148588 tn?1465778809 I'm trying to buy solar panels and a wind turbine to power my car but Autozone told me to go pound sand and buy gas like everyone else.
306867 tn?1299249709 I do know that some power sources such as using wind or solar power are showing to be viable and should be further researched and some farms use windmills to generate some of their electrical power already and some buildings have solar panels to generate sources of clean energy. I well understand people's concerns about finances but other than that to me it makes common sense if there were no public pressure should as within the cap and trade regulations.
Avatar f tn India's human resources development minister Kapil Sibal has unveiled a prototype tablet PC priced 1,500 rupees or $35, a price that is set to challenge the global manufacturers of tablet PCs and iPads. The device developed to provide rural children quality education will also work on a solar-power option.
148588 tn?1465778809 In that same article I'd mentioned, there was a bit on how much electricity produced by solar and wind that actually made the grid. I don't remember the numbers but it was kind of sad. Nowadays things are far better and a lot more juice is reaching the grid. Just goes to show you how technology can jump leaps and bounds in a decade or two. No doubt we have to do something and I am all ears on ideas.

Avatar m tn [3] The proton storms are produced in the solar wind, and hence present a hazard to astronauts during interplanetary travel. Most proton storms take two or more hours from the time of visual detection to reach Earth's orbit. A solar flare on January 20, 2005 released the highest concentration of protons ever directly measured,[4] taking only 15 minutes after observation to reach Earth, indicating a velocity of approximately one-half light speed. http://en.wikipedia.
1310633 tn?1430224091 SUNNY SPELLS, BREEZY Obama has promised more assistance for solar and wind technology, though he will need congressional support to extend tax breaks that help those industries. "Obama can love solar as much as he wants, but I don't know that a whole lot more is going to happen in terms of new, constructive policy," said Morningstar analyst Stephen Simko.
148588 tn?1465778809 Driven by the availability of cheaper and more efficient energy storage and inexpensive solar power, electric vehicles will begin to attain cost parity with cars driven by internal combustion engines. According to UBS, in a market with high road fuel prices, such as Germany, the total cost of ownership of an electric vehicle such as the Tesla S is already comparable with a gasoline-powered car, such as the Audi A7.
Avatar f tn s original intent -- solar energy projects, wind energy projects and any other alternative type of energy is absolutely necessary, if the US is stop being dependent on foreign oil; however, I stand by what I said before: If they'd have used the $787 billion they spent on the bail out, we might already have new jobs being created; people might already have gone back to work; there might be less pollution; our country might be safer.
148588 tn?1465778809 I'll say that we are trying, hence the birth of solar, wind and wave power technologies that have been and are further being developed. The problem with that is, the products that need to be manufactured to produce this power probably comes from a petroleum product and there is probably some kind of coal fired power plant (or nuclear power plant which we know has some very dangerous side effects and waste developed) behind the production of said parts. Mass transit is beautiful.
Avatar m tn You weren't asking me but yes. Yes we did. "Nothing to see here folks... now go away. This will be good for you. You'll have to vote for us...." wait, that last part was Nancy Pelosi.
148588 tn?1465778809 We are investing more into wind and solar. A few of the nation's oil and gas guys are BIG into wind farms. There are some down sides though, and if you're concerned about the environment there is a price to pay. There is tons of toxic waste created from the production of solar panels. Wind farms are killing birds and displacing wildlife and there are studies being conducted on the impact of the production of the windmills themselves.
179856 tn?1333547362 Timing is everything. And for the Solar Dynamics Observatory, launched into orbit this past February, the timing couldn't have been better. The SDO helps scientists study solar storms, and for a long couple of years prior to the launch, those storms were few and far between. Our nearby star was in a deep sleep, largely devoid of the sunspots, flares and prominences that indicate heightened magnetic activity.
163305 tn?1333668571 Setting up a myriad of solar-panels in the middle of the desert and trying to harness the power of the sun to power cities? Horse pucky, I say.
206807 tn?1331936184 re poised to transform the ways we power our homes and our cars and our businesses. ... And we are poised to generate countless new jobs, good-paying, middle-class jobs, right here in the United States of America." In a blog posting, Energy Department spokesman Dan Leistikow said Solyndra was a once promising company that had increased sales revenue by 2,000 percent in the past three years.
649848 tn?1534633700 Oil and coal are where you are probably mostly powering your homes right now unless you are completley off the grid and have your own solar/wind farm or rely on nuclear power. China is in the bogus shape it is because there are no regulations. None from production, importation, or use of oil and oil products. It's purchase and consume at will. In the mean time, they are buying random energy companies all over the globe. (A few in Canada just in the last couple of weeks to a month.
535822 tn?1443976780 til the costs drop down to a price most people can afford. I mean, we all know that electric cars, hybrid cars, solar and wind power are all reasonable efforts to try for alternative energy sources, but the start up costs make such things out of reach for the average person. And, I've actually heard some down sides to solar panels, in that they can actually burn the soil in nearby areas, so I'm not convinced that solar belongs everywhere.
148588 tn?1465778809 The currents that ripple through our planet can easily enter transformers that serve as nodes in regional, national, and global power grids. They can also seep into and corrode the steel in lengthy stretches of oil and gas pipeline. On October 29, power grids around the world felt the strain from the geomagnetic currents. In North America, utility companies scaled back electricity generation to protect the grid.

Avatar m tn Abengoa cost 35 million euros to build and generates 6.3 million euros a year in power a year for a break even in 6 years and 6.3 million euros 'free' energy after that. Someone may have pulled some henky financing along the way, but the concept of carbon free, non-heavy metal solar concentrating is sound.
163305 tn?1333668571 So we don't use oil for energy...what do we use? Unreliable wind power? Or unreliable and expensive solar power? What if a building is too close to the solar panels and starts on fire? What if we put up a lot of wind turbines and they fall over? You can come up with a downside to ever source of energy, but guess what oil is what we use and while we develop other sources to cut us off oil is suicide.
