Avatar m tn Teens need about 9 hours. Generally, their sleep cycles are shifted later, so they tend to go to bed later and get up later. However, since most schools start early in the morning, most teens are sleep deprived.
Avatar f tn I also knew that my son was so hyper he was hard to get to sleep at night and refused to take naps at daycare so I looked up sleep disorders and sleep deficit and the symptoms it could cause. Sleep deficit can trigger bipolar disorder. (Sleep disorders can be caused by tonsils and adenoids) Specifically a lack of sleep will put a child in a manic state and he will stay there.
Avatar f tn I'm getting frustrated myself to all levels. I thought of the possibility of ADD or ADHD and had him tested at about 2 or 3 and they said No he's fine but its so frustrating. I have tried multiple discipline tactics, positive reinforcements and nothing is working. I think I should get him reevaluated.
Avatar n tn The earliest signs of emerging mania can be progressive loss of sleep and extra energy. It can be a matter of hours in which such cases become manic psychosis. Very early intervention in such cases can be rewarding and prevent a hospital admission. Because of the stigma still attached to bipolar disorder (and to many other mental diseases), patients are frequently reluctant to acknowledge that anything is wrong, and doctors often fail to recognize the disorder.
Avatar f tn The duration and intensity of physical outbursts and temper tantrums differs in the two disorders. Children who are ADHD usually calm down in twenty to thirty minutes, whereas children who are bipolar may continue to feel and act angry for up to four hours. 3. The degree of “regression” (baby talk) during angry episodes is typically more severe for children who are bipolar.

Avatar f tn My son was diagnosed with ADHD at 3. He was hyper active and extremely good at escaping the house. He was not learning or learning and then forgetting what was learned. He has a lot of fine motor issues and at 91/2 still cannot tie his shoes. We took him to his regular pediatrician and to a physiologist who prescribed ADHD meds. He has has had adverse reactions to three and now hates to leave the house or engage on anything new. The social anxiety is far worse than ever.
Avatar m tn I would get him an appointment with a neuropsycologist who diagnosis autism spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD, and other similar disorders. Make sure that you or another adult very familiar with his actions/symptoms goes in with him to see the doctor. They can retest him and possibly test for other things as well. You might also have him undergo a sleep study. In many kids who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, having their tonsils and adenoids removed can greatly reduce the symptoms.
Avatar n tn ADD is no longer a diagnosis in the most current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. ADHD is the current nomenclature and has 3 subtypes, hyperactive-impulsive type, predominately inattentive type, and combined type.
Avatar f tn Ok. Because I've had bouts of obsessive thoughts over the years that last a while and really effect me in emotional and some physical ways. They'll start small and I'll just brush them off then later they'll come back out of no where full swing and just takes control of me and causes me to obsessively think about it constantly. All this worry and anxiety and depression are mixed in. I'm not sure if it's OCD or not but it has to be something.
Avatar f tn The short answer: There is no difference. Officially, only ADHD exists. It comes in three varieties: ADHD predominantly hyperactive, ADHD predominantly inattentive, and ADHD mixed type. In other words, you don't need to be hyperactive in order to be diagnosed as ADHD. The term ADD is merely a popular abbreviation frequently (mis)used to indicate that someone is inattentive and does not display symptoms of hyperactivity.
Avatar n tn wen i was a small child, i was diagnosed with add/adhd/odd but with doctors attentoin im a completely normal person and im about to start uni. im now 18, have managed a resturant ect.
Avatar n tn some times when i go to sleep and about 1 hour or 2 hours i wake up not feeling well, and my heart is beating fast and i feel very nervous and scared that i am going to faint but i put cold water in my forehead and my neck and i stat to feel better and my heart beat is slowing down and only happens when i am sleeping.
Avatar m tn hello, i am 19 years old ,male sometimes before sleeping i hear my heart beats weak and when i sleep i feel that i enter a strange state , i feel my breath is stopped and then my head shakes rapidly and sometimes my body or legs shakes and sometimes during this i hear strange voices or dream (see strange things) and in many times i can take a fast breath to return to normal state and sleep symptoms during day(awake); sometimes during awake(in any normal day)(not after these symptoms i mean)
Avatar n tn Hi, welcome to the forum, there are hormones and neurotransmitters and receptors which play role in sleep and wakefulness. Melatonin is one such hormone and it appears to be the primary sleep-regulating hormone of the body. It is secreted in relation with normal day/night cycles. It affects sleep itself, decreasing sleep latency, increasing sleep efficiency, and increasing the total sleep time. Melatonin acts on the melatonin receptors.
Avatar f tn If this always happens as you are going to sleep and/or wakes you up from sleep, my first thought would be sleep apnea. Before I was diagnosed and began using a CPAP, I had become very afraid to sleep, and avoided it till I collapsed in exhaustion. Much of what you describe is what I experienced. Since I got my CPAP working well for me I have not had one episode of the sense of choking or difficulty breathing.
Avatar n tn Is it that important that he goes to sleep early, does he sleep during the day? My son has never slept before 11pm what time are you trying to get him to sleep? Lots of families are in the park until 10pm by us and made me realise i am not alone!
Avatar f tn It could be narcolepsy but if that's the case then it would be happening more often. You should go for a sleep study and have them check for narcolepsy. Do you feel excessively tired during the day all the time?
