Common Questions and Answers about Sleep deprivation effects on the brain

sleep

Avatar f tn As a teenager I went through a year of sleep deprivation. I got about six hours of sleep a night. I felt very sleepy every day and even had feelings of confusion and derealization. Did I cause any permanent damage to my brain? In addition, has damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals irreversibly increased my cancer risk?
1926359 tn?1331588139 So when you attempt to wean off these sleep meds, your body is left with even less of anything to use to keep the sleep/wake cycle in check until the brain gets the message that it has to start producing its own once again.
1549468 tn?1345468736 can anyone explain why sleep medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, have the opposite effect on me? I have had numerous sleep studies done, and all they can tell me is that I am a "true insomniac". I get, at best, 2 maybe 3 hours of broken sleep a night. I will go 2-3 weeks without shutting my eyes at all, then my body will collapse, and I will sleep for days without waking up. In fact, I won't even change the position I was in when I fell asleep.
Avatar m tn The primary goal of the physician is to restore oxygen to the brain with various relevant methods depending on the severity. Brain damage can be localized if left sided, it will affect speech and language and if right sided, it will affect emotion and interpretation. Usually mild to moderate cerebral hypoxia will lead to no long term effects. Hope this information helps. Take care.
519592 tn?1211919961 It seems you are now under lot of stress causing you the sleep deprivation. You might be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and associated rhythmic movement disorder, which you need to get evaluated by a sleep doctor and also get a sleep test done. How about your blood pressure? Stress can trigger your migraine headache, which in turn worsens the sleep deprivation. It is better to consult a neurologist and a sleep specialist and discuss your plan of care.
774736 tn?1311331385 I was diagnosed with GAD earlier this year and have gone through horrific panic attacks, agoraphobia, and many other anxiety related nightmares but lately Ive been struggling with sleep deprivation...Every day for the past couple months I have not been able to sleep at a reasonable hour...I have to completely exaust myself to finally get to sleep and before I do, I go through a period of feeling "under the influence", as if im drunk or high...
326352 tn?1310994295 For any of you out there who have or have had in the past toddlers in the house.....how do you EVER get enough sleep? And of course, the diet gurus all say that adequate sleep is so important. How do you do that with 2 babies who are alternating their wake-ups....sleep restlessly (in our bed, they don't start there, but end up there around midnight)...and God love them, keep mommy from getting a good night's sleep.
1794093 tn?1357930759 I definitely understand the sleep deprivation. It really ***** :( I work overnights and have a terrible time trying to sleep during the morning/afternoons. Im also up every hour, or hour and a half, then still manage to work/do things around the house. I always thought the 2nd trimester was supposed to be the best, sure i dont feel sick anymore, but this has been brutal for sleep. Thats exciting about your ultrasound coming up, and really exciting that you are not finding out the gender!

Avatar m tn Obstructive Sleep Apnea is unlikely to cause hallucinations, but and they can occur with certain medications, stress, sleep deprivation, in certain brain disorders and with schizophrenia or bipolar disorders. So, like you mentioned sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations. But if they persist, I would advise you to discuss your symptoms with your primary care physician for further evaluation. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn m quite the opposite, I sleep far too much. I have had some sinus issues in the past though. Mine, however, turned out to be allergy related. Still, I can pass on some of the information I explored. Apparantly, a thick build up of mucus can be caused due to the lack of ample fluids. Your diet can also be a cause, with certain foods aiding in its production. If you smoke, and the mucus is grey/brownish, then that would be your problem.
1606496 tn?1491508730 I can't take naps for the same swollen brain feeling you are describing. Stay hydrated and stay away from the stimulants. As far as I can tell as long as I sleep at night and avoid sleeping irregular hours, then I never feel that way. Could be increased temperature with dehydration? Could be a form of migraine? Not sure to be quite honest.
Avatar n tn It is the practice of maximizing awake time and reducing the need to sleep by isolating the rejuvenating REM part of sleep from the unnecessary other pieces. During a normal night of 8 hours of sleep, there are only about 2-3 hours of REM sleep. However, after an adaptation period of about a week, all the sleep that is needed is 6 20 minute naps equally spaced throughout the day. Check out www.stevepavlina.com for the blog of someone who practiced it for about 8 months.
Avatar n tn However, my husband has recently noticed that my short term memory and confusion has gotten a lot worse and I am curious as to if the effects of my Brain Injury worsen with time. I thought that in time, my brain would learn new ways to get around the damaged part of my brain and get better at remembering things and doing things, although recently it just seems to be getting a lot worse. Does anyone know the answer to this question?
Avatar m tn What you are experiencing could be hallucinations and delusions and they can occur with certain medications, stress, sleep deprivation, in certain brain disorders and with schizophrenia or bipolar disorders. You will need to consult your primary care physician for re assessment and he may then refer you to a psychiatrist if needed. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
8398640 tn?1398042546 causes to MS related cognitive issues too eg medication side effects, fatigue, pain, sleep deprivation, psychological issue-depression, stress, self confidence etc One way to basically work out if it's 'possibly' a secondary issue, is to make notes looking for any discernible patterns eg.....What do you experience eg memory loss of prior knowledge, deadlines, call backs, keys, phone. When you experience it eg every Monday afternoon to end of day.
Avatar f tn You are probably under too much of stress and need to relax. Do you remember of any factors that has triggered the sleep deprivation off late? Have you been under care of a physician and was Methadone prescribed to you? "Methadone is now primarily used today for the treatment of narcotic addiction. The effects of methadone last longer than those of morphine-based drugs.
Avatar f tn So I've made it a week. Haven't taken a Norco since March 7th I was feeling better a few days ago, but as of today not so much. I've still got no desire to take anything. But the sleep deprivation is making me crazy. I'm running a slight fever off and on, mostly later in the day. Anxious. Moods all over the place. Can anyone tell me how long the physical stuff actually lasts? I can hang in there if I have some idea of when this will pass.
Avatar m tn My birthday was on the 6th, so on the 7th I had some friends over to hang out. Now, I don't normally drink anything with caffeine in it (including soda, tea, or coffee), but about a week ago my sister bought a 24 pack of Mountain Dew and Pepsi. For about a whole week I would down 3-5 (give or take) cans of soda and hardly any food with it, and about 10-13 cans on the day of my party.
