1580703 tn?1651904887 I have GERD/sleep apnea and woke up hyperventilating for years. Is there a treatment for it? Is protonix the best treatment for GERD? I've been taking nexium, zantac, but still have this terrible sleep apnea. maybe I need nexium at 80mg. I would wake up choking once after eating spicy food and also have hot flashes This discussion is related to Acid reflux.
Avatar n tn , but he has not used the machine in months. Is this really good, safe intelligent treatment for sleep apnea?
Avatar n tn My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea in spite of being muscular and trim. He has not been able to adjust to the cpap at all. Lately he has been exhausted, often headachy, feeling a bit light headed at times and over all unmotivated. He has been able to keep pushing through at work because he was raised on a farm where work is done regardless of how you feel. I recently learned that hypothyroidism can cause sleep apnea. Is this true? What step would you take next?
568603 tn?1240404035 Hi, I have sleep apnea and can give you a little information. The more you know the less you will worry. Machines come set between 4 and 20. However, most people need at least 7-8 cm h2o to be able to breathe without feeling like they are suffocating. The number of the pressure prescription doesn't have anything to do with the severity of your sleep apnea.
Avatar m tn t have to be overweight or be male to have significant sleep apnea. Young, thin women can have severe sleep apnea. Ultimately, it's an anatomic issue, and weight gain comes in much later. She should undergo a sleep study.
Avatar n tn That depends. Do you have a copy of your sleep study results? If you have mild sleep apnea, there is a possibility a dental device could help, but those are expensive too. Some are helped with surgery, but many find after surgery they still need cpap. Hardly anyone gets used to wearing a mask to breathe in a night or two. Some take weeks and have to try several masks to get one that's right for them. But the benefits from toughing it out till adjusted make it worth the effort...
Avatar n tn It is not unheard of to buy a machine online and treat oneself for obstructive sleep apnea. With the data capable and auto titrating machines, generally speaking, one can tell if the treatment is effective. (With a basic machine, you are shooting in the dark.) Here's the downside to self treatment. If one has central sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea, you wouldn't know that and your treatment may not be effective.
Avatar f tn You may need to use a sleep aid while you adjust to the sleep apnea treatment. Once your cpap treatment is giving you restful sleep with no oxygen desats, you may find other pains improve also.
Avatar m tn I was newly diagnosed with "mild PH" due to sleep apnea. Systolic pressure, measured by right heart cath, was 55 while mean was 33. I reacted well to nitric oxide during the cath., with mean pressure going down to 26 (systolic went down to 40, I believe). I have "mild" sleep apnea, based on sleep study, but also showed desaturation down to 79% at its worst, and have just been put on CPAP machine.
Avatar n tn If so, are you certain your treatment is effective? Some machines record treatment data that reports how well the treatment is working for your apnea. Also, if you are on CPAP, some masks have straps that are too tight around the lower back of the head and hurt the muscles of the neck that connect the head and shoulders.
Avatar f tn Forgot to mention that oxygen is not the treatment for sleep apnea. Helping you to breathe better one way or another without obstruction is the best way of treating this condition.
Avatar n tn The most common treatment and arguably the most consistently effective treatment for sleep apnea is the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device. In addition to CPAP, a dentist specializing in sleep disorders can prescribe Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT). So please contact your doctor if you have not done it before so that treatment can be started. Regards and God bless.
Avatar n tn I would advise you to consult a sleep specialist who would assess with first a sleep questionnaire, and then he may ask for a polysomnogram, which is an overnight sleep study as this helps to detect the apneas. Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is by CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) where air under gentle pressure is passed into the airways keeping it patent. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Basically she said she couldn’t just do a sleep study without an order but said she really doubted I needed treatment for sleep apnea and that the take home tests are very very faulty and unreliable. I guess I want to ask if anyone else has had a similar circumstance?
Avatar m tn I think You should go for the CPAP treatment as the sleep apnea treatment. It will help you a lot as reccommended by the doctor as the best treatment. http://www.sleepapnea-treatment.
Avatar f tn You need a sleep study. I don't think your pacemaker will do anything for sleep apnea. Untreated, it can cause all kinds of problems, like hypertension and my doctor is convinced that it was a contributing factor to my afib.
Avatar f tn It is important to rule out type of sleep apnea like Obstructive apnea, Central apnea and Mixed apnea. You need to undergo tests to rule out the type of apnea. Few of the tests include Apnea index, Apnea-hypopnea index, Respiratory disturbance index, Desaturation and Arousal index. It can be initially manged by supplemental oxygen. Nightmare disorder, or dream anxiety disorder, which is a sleep disorder characterized by frequent nightmares or vivid dreams.
Avatar m tn They told Craig he has moderate to severe sleep apnea and needs a CPAP immediately. So it is arriving tomorrow. It is the size of a laptop computer and has a "smart card" in it that records data during the night while the person is sleeping. We then take the card to each follow up appt and they will download the information on it. Anyway, the sleep doctor was telling me that many problems could be caused by sleep apnea.
Avatar f tn Thanks for responding. Yes I had sleep study done and I had mild Sleep Apnea. However the machine is not helping me at all.
1054090 tn?1343965695 If you do have sleep apnea, the treatment is that you will sleep with a CPAP machine. It stands for Continuos Positive Air Pressure. You wear a mask that blows air down your passages to keep them from closing when you sleep. Cause when they close is when you stop breathing. Id it is determined you have sleep apnea it is vital that you wear the cpap eveytime!! You can die from sleep apnea just as easily as a baby can die from sids.
Avatar m tn Your description sounds so much like what I described before being diagnosed with sleep apnea. By the way, not everyone with apnea snores and/or is overweight. Sometimes it has to do with throat and/or jaw structure, not weight. All HMO's are different. Check with your provider. I've had two different HMO's and they both covered diagnosis and treatment.
