422425 tn?1307992990 See a sleep specialist to make sure whether or not he has sleep apnea. If he has sleep apnea, then treating it will take care of the snoring. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart disease, heart attack, or stroke. As Curtis 1960 recommends, dental devices are available over the counter (or over the internet - two products that come to mind are puresleep and somnoguard). Dentists can make better fitting and adjustable models that work better.
Avatar n tn They have proved effective for people who snore, and especially those who have mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. So what are these devices and how do they work? Well, they are small plastic devices which you must wear in the mouth; they prevent the soft throat tissues from collapsing and obstructing the airway. ______________________________________ [url=http://www.VIAdmd.

There are many causes like decreased muscular tone in tongue/throat, can be aggravated by alcohol/drug use, bulky throat soft tissue like enlarged tonsils or uvula, airway obstruction due to nasal congestion caused by frequent cold or allergies, any structural deformity within the airway and obesity etc. Snoring can be worse with high humidity in bedroom.
Avatar m tn My husband has MS. He had a sleep study showing sleep apnea and lack of REM sleep. He wakes a few times each night and is sweating profusely, requiring changing sheets once or twice a night. Is sleep apnea common in MS and related to the disease? He has Primary Progressive MS.
679466 tn?1247006054 org) and talking to your sleep doctor about it. Dental devices may be another option. The problem with many people with mild sleep apnea is that since your nervous system is so hypersensitive, you won't like anything on your face or in your face. Patients with severe sleep apnea have diminished nervous systems, so that's why they don't wake up from apneas very quickly.
Avatar n tn If he has sleep apnea, it can usually be successfully treated with with a cpap machine, some try oral devices or surgery. Sleep apnea is worsened by alcohol. Sleep apnea causes progressive health damage and puts one at increased risk of cardiac problems and stroke. It puts one at increased risk of an accident, and robs of energy and mental acuity. It's also been reported to contribute to impotence and decreased libido, also problems with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Avatar f tn My doctor yesterday said i have GERD but told me to see if my breathing wont change maybe i already sleep apnea and basing from what i experience i think it is central sleep apnea. Avatar f tn Additionally, opening up your nose will help, but don't count on it helping to cure your sleep-breathing condition. (It's been shown to cure sleep apnea in about only 10% of the time.) The benefit to a septoplasty (and turbinoplasty) is that you'll breathe better through your nose in general, and it'll allow you to use treatment options (CPAP or dental devices) much more effectively. Lasers are a very old technology and is rarely used anymore with this type of procedure.
Avatar m tn If you have severe snoring, you could be having obstructive sleep apnea. Treating sleep apnea will not only treat your snoring, but also may save your life. Untreated sleep apnea can aggravate or cause hypertension, diabetes, weight gain, depression, heart disease, heart attack or stroke. Regards.
Avatar n tn My husband was recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea at a sleep clinic. He has suffered from severe, almost debilitating fatigue for many years, never knowing why. He does not snore. It turns out there is a non-snoring type of Sleep Apnea, and not one doctor (of many, MANY!) ever suggested this as a cause for the fatigue and exhaustion. Now he is using a CPAP machine, and adjusting quite well!
Avatar m tn I was just curious if anyone has dealt with heart irregularities that may have been connected to their having sleep apnea? There seems to be some indication in sleep research that apnea could generate heart problems, but I've never actually run into someone that did have such issues.
Avatar m tn Hello, Chances are that you are not having obstructive sleep apnea but central or mixed apnea. Central apnea occurs when the part of the brain that controls breathing doesn't start or properly maintain the breathing process.Found commonly in Poliomyelitis, encephalitis ,neurodegnerative diseases ,complications of surgery or radiation therapy to the cervical spine and stroke.
Avatar m tn Great, in USA there is few medical devices underway for obs sleep apnea- similar to Pace maker, do you have knowledge of this-
4686261 tn?1358135192 apnea and dreaming. The dreaming may be more a psychiatrist issue than a neurologist one in my case. I didn't have trouble with either until a good bit older than you are, so my problems may be part of the price of living a long time... a goal we all have instinctively.

Avatar m tn He sugested that it might be acid reflux gave me some meds and had me do a sleep study and found ou that i had sleep apnea he gave me a cpac machine and told me i would have to wear it for life. Has there been anyone who had sleep apnea and been able to get rid of it ?
507890 tn?1211294759 She might be having sleep terrors coupled with sleep apnea. These hallucinations are seen if sleep deprivation does continue for long time. Does she fall asleep for more part of day? Is she active in her studies and daily activities? Has ENT doctor for snoring problem seen her? It is better to consult the doctor at early and update on the advice. Take care.
Avatar m tn So a few years back I went for some sleep studies because my GP thought I might have sleep apnea. After a few studies, the doctors said that my Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) was 5.31...which is just barely mild sleep apnea. They tried me on a CPAP machine to see if it worked and it made me feel like crap. So I went out and bought an oximeter with a recording function that I wear every few nights.
783663 tn?1236200728 Of even greater consequence than poor sleep is sleep apnea. Snoring increases your risk of having it. It can deprive the brain and body of needed oxygen, flood the body with stress hormones, affect appetite horrnones, and increase risk of stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, and diabetes. You might want to consider being evaluated for the possibility of sleep apnea. Should you have it, a CPAP machine will usually resolve it, and the bonus benefit is it also addresses the snoring.
Avatar m tn Hi there! I got the results of my polysomnogram and the diagnosis stated "normal sleep study." There was nothing to indicate apnea - I had a 76.3% sleep efficiency over 344 min, with 67 min sleep latency, 216 Stage R latency, WASO 39 min, and my sleep stage percentages seemed okay at N1 9.9%, N2 56.7%, N3 17.9% and R 15.6%. AHI was 5.2.
Avatar n tn Have people told you that you snore a lot in sleep ? Sleep apnea involves a reduced oxygen supply to the lungs due to periods of apnea (breathing stopped for about 10 seconds). Your next step should be to consult a sleep specialist and to do a sleep study if needed.
