Avatar f tn The interaction has also been reported in patients receiving atorvastatin, lovastatin, or simvastatin with other potent CYP450 3A4 inhibitors such as azole antifungal agents, macrolide antibiotics, HIV protease inhibitors, and nefazodone. Clinically, high levels of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity in plasma may be associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal toxicity.

Avatar f tn Average incidence per 10 000 person-years for monotherapy with atorvastatin, pravastatin, or simvastatin was 0.44%" Here's the link; http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/292/21/2585.full It is extremely rare and is not associated with Zocor (Sivastatin) more than any other statin. Statins are being found to be much safer than previously thought. For instance, it has been determined that statins help increase liver function in individuals with liver disease.

Avatar f tn Lisinipril is $4/month and $10 for 90 days at WalMart and many other pharmacies that have the $4 precription plan. You pay out of pocket. Simvastatin isn't on that list, but lovastatin and pravastatin are, if your doctor feels like you could try substituting one of those. Metoprolol isn't on the $4/month plan, but atenolol is. Again, maybe your doctor would be okay with changing you from metoprolol to atenolol. It's worth talking to the doc about.
Avatar f tn Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. Unfortunately, my husband did not quiz him further. He already has one stent in a narrow back artery but he has brought his cholesterol down considerably with the statins.
Avatar m tn After recent cath my doctor changed my medication from vytorin ,have taken vytorin for 5 years, to lovastatin. I did ask for a cheaper medicine and lovastatin was what he came with. 179856 tn?1333547362 After 36 weeks of treatment, the cumulative proportion of patients who reached the primary safety endpoint was lower in the pravastatin group than in the placebo group (8% vs 13%; 95% confidence interval [CI], −11.6 to 1.6; P = .1379). In fact, the mean ALT values declined from baseline in the pravastatin group, whereas the mean ALT and AST were increased from baseline in the placebo group. None of the subjects in either treatment group had an elevation of total bilirubin >2 times the ULN.

Avatar f tn I hear this quite often. Next tie you speak to your doctor ask about Zocor. There is a generic called simvastatin and it is very cheap yet very effective. Also, the additional med that your doctor was talking about is most likely a fenofibrate like Tricor which is commonly added to a statin med. I am on both and they have worked very well for me with no side effects.
Avatar f tn The effects of atorvastatin 80 mg/d and pravastatin 40 mg/d on CIMT were compared. Baseline CIMT and other characteristics were similar in both groups. After 12 months of follow up it was found that the LDL-C was around 76 +/- 23 and 110 +/- 30 mg/dl in the atorvastatin and pravastatin group respectively. There was a regression in the CIMT of –0.034+/-0.021 mm in the atorvastatin group whereas the CIMT remained stable in the pravastatin group.
Avatar n tn We have been on simvastatin for (wife for 1+ years, me for 2+ years) and stopped about 5-6 months ago - wife still having pains in the butt some dizziness and leg pain, but getting better - I am having butt pain and leg pains, swollen left knee, (but joint pain seems OK on stairs), recovery seems slower than my wife's. Avatar m tn s production of cytochrome P450, I am wondering about switching from simvastatin to pravastatin. That would allow me to try CBD, which appears to have minimal side-effects. I also wouldn't mind getting more than a few hours of sleep per night. That said, am I taking a risk by switching statins after three decades? I haven't been able to find any significant and update research that covers this situations. Thank you.
