Simvastatin muscle weakness

Common Questions and Answers about Simvastatin muscle weakness

Avatar f tn My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it. Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol?
Avatar f tn Myopathy manifested as muscle pain and/or weakness associated with grossly elevated creatine kinase exceeding ten times the upper limit of normal has been reported occasionally. Rhabdomyolysis has also occurred rarely, which may be accompanied by acute renal failure secondary to myoglobinuria and may result in death. MANAGEMENT: Due to the potential for severe interaction, concomitant use of atorvastatin, lovastatin, or simvastatin with telaprevir is considered contraindicated.
1616588 tn?1298642717 Deficiency of this enzyme can cause the cramp, muscle and overall feeling of weakness. You can buy this enzyme with the supplements. It can be expensive so buy the highest strength you can afford. Have you told your doctor about this? Your doctor should rule out whether this is a more serious side effect of this class of drugs. Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice. This can cause the level of the drug to increase in the body and possibly increase your risk of side effects.
152264 tn?1280358257 I've been taking simvastatin (I believe it's generic for Zocor) for six weeks now, and all seems well. My one-month cholesterol test showed my LDL dropped dramatically, well into the normal range! Liver test was normal. No side effects that I can tell. I do have significant muscle achiness, but no worse than normal (I've ached for 15 years). Two questions: 1. If muscle pain or deterioration is going to happen, WHEN does it begin to happen?
Avatar m tn The FDA requires warnings that statins may increase the risk of liver damage, memory loss and confusion, elevated blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, muscle weakness (for certain statins). Increasing blood sugar levels can lead to weight gain.
Avatar f tn Less common are headache, dizziness, rash, sleep disturbances, muscle pain, cramps, or weakness. Both simvastatin and pravastatin have the same side effect profile, but it does depend on the individual as to whether one would cause more issues than the other." The only negative I have read about Simvastatin in recent times is a study that showed high doses of simvastatin of 80 mg puts a patient at a greater risk for side effects including muscle damage.
Tbd I'm hypersensitive to several cholesterol medications. They usually cause severe muscle pain and weakness.
Avatar n tn Treatment with both simvastatin and niacin may result in muscle pain or tenderness or muscle weakness. Using simvastatin together with niacin is usually not recommended, but may be required in some cases. If you are using both medicines together, your doctor may change the dose or how often you use one or both of the medicines. It is important to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all other medicines that you are using.
Avatar m tn My pharmacist says that these medicines have problems with interacting with each other and the simvanstatin causes muscle weakness and could contribute to the issues I am having. she suggested that I not take the simvanstatin due to the potency of it. My Question: could these medicines have caused me the problems that I am experiencing? I need help urgently!
2085202 tn?1373203340 I am also on simvastatin and have heard that simvastatin can cause bone and muscle deterioration. Is that true? Does osteoporosis and simvastatin sound like they could be correct for being the possible reason's behind this? Is there a drug or any vitamins or medicine to help rebuild the damage done or the muscle reduction if simvastatin is the cause? Is there a test or tests that can identify the shin bone pain to tell whether or not it is osteoporosis or not?
Avatar f tn Fatigue and lethargy are side effects of atenolol, however, I do not see any information suggesting that muscle weakness is a side effect of atenolol. I see that you also take Vytorin. It appears that symptoms of ALS,( Lou Gehrig's Disease) have been reported to the FDA in a higher than expected number of patients taking statins. ALS is a progressive motor neuron disorder with symptoms such as difficulty walking or standing, difficulty with fine motor skills and muscle paralysis.
Avatar f tn hi just wanted to add that it sounds like part of the problem is the staten. The muscle problem and weakness. The ange and lack of interest is something else I think and maybe he is depressed? Does he have a reason to be depressed? Also, maybe check his thyroid while you are at the doctor. Tiredness and irritablility could be that. Is he sleeping too much or not enough? Hope you can shed some light on this but I would tell the doctor all his symptoms and don't feel like they are nothing.
Avatar f tn Ramipril has been indicated to cause sexual problems, but both these drugs can affect liver function and in turn affect sexual performance.Further more, statin drugs can cause muscle weakness and may lead to a drop in overall energy level. Whenever you suspect any side effect, you are supposed to contact your doctor, who would advise you how to correct the problem by adjusting the dosage or with alternative medicine. So, please consult your doctor for help.
Avatar f tn You have a higher chance for muscle problems if you are taking certain other medicines with Lipitor. Especially telling if there are muscle problems like weakness, tenderness, or pain that happen without a good reason, and if your husband also has a fever or feel more tired than usual. I was on Lipitor, but went on Simvastatin 20mg (much less expensive, too) and the results have been very good. Recent blood test shows LDL 45 and HDL 58, trig 55 and chol 114.
Avatar m tn I saw an EENT and he sees nothing wrong with my ears. I also stop taking all my vitamins and simvastatin just to see if that will help. Have you heard of this before. My dose was a childs dose (.5 mg).
Avatar n tn 'I've battled high cholesterol for a number of years and can't find the right medicine...Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing.
10996785 tn?1432816577 Like you, I pulled myself off of Lipitor (atorvastatin) because of muscle and joint weakness/pain and other recorded side effect. I had only taken it for about five weeks and the discomfort remains three weeks later. I had the same reaction to simvastatin, which I am told is the worst of the bunch. I'm waiting a few months and then I will try something with a less violent track record.
Avatar n tn She has extreme muscle tone loss and weakness to th e point that both arms look like just skin and bones and she has to use her arms to lift herself from a seated positon. I thought it might be from the Atenolol she takes to lower her blood pressure but that it seems doesn't cause that kind of weakness. I then read something about possibly a b12 deficiency but she does take a vitamin supplement so I don't know if that could be the culprit.
1962464 tn?1344610273 Lowering cholesterol artificially with a statin drug (in your case Simvastatin) is linked to numerous adverse side effects. An amazing article on Dr Mercola's website called "The Dark Truth About the "Wonder Drug" Millions Swear By" written by Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a senior scientist at MIT, posted 12 dangers of statin drugs. One of the dangers listed: "#8.
562206 tn?1216153622 I WAS taking a Statin called Simvastatin. The side effect of Statin's in some people is muscle pain. I stopped taking Simvastatin about two weeks ago on my own. It was like a miracle. My pain is gone! I don't take anything for pain now. I don't suggest you do what I did, but you might want to talk to your doctor. Good luck!
Avatar n tn muscle ache/pain, fever, unusual tiredness or weakness, vision changes, yellowing eyes or skin. If this medication makes you dizzy or lightheaded, avoid driving or engaging in activities requiring alertness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Avatar n tn However, the strange thing is I don't feel as though I have lost any strength in them, just a constant tiredness/weakness/post workout-type of feeling. My wife thinks I'm just "way out of shape" (which is true to a degree though I appear as though I'm in good shape), but this feels like something else. Hard to explain. Accompanying it is an feeling of general malaise; I'd rather just lay down if I had the option most of the time.
Avatar m tn Now I'm wondering if the whole problem could be caused by the statin drug which I've read can cause muscle weakness/cramps or worse. I'm concerned that it might be progressive since the cramps are occurring every night now (little sleep) and now go into my rib area as well as up and down the thoracic (mid) back region. I've stopped working my handyman job and exercising since the cramping is even more severe with exercise of any sort.
808920 tn?1268061368 Was on several med at one point but now am taking Coreg CR, Simvastatin, aspirin, fish oil. Have been following a low-salt diet as well. My last EF test revealed it was 49% so Dr suggested I start taking enalapril again as a precaution. Recently I became ill with similiar symptoms but no difficulty in breathing. Suffering from weakness, jittery, queasiness. Went back to Cardiologists and had EKG which was normal. At present, am wearing a 48 hr heart monitor.
Avatar f tn I came home after a day with prescriptions of Clopidogrel 75mg, Metoprolol tartrate 50 mg, Acetylsalicylic acid 75 mg and Simvastatin 40 mg (my cholesterol was 200 ).Since then I never felt good. Now and then I am having jaw pains. I had been to the emergency twice during the first week, but everything was found to be OK. Sometimes the jaw pain is accompanied with long breaths and some tightness in the chest. These may go away upon rest for an hour, but come back any time.
Avatar m tn It occurs due to metabolism errors, exogenous toxins released by virus, autoimmune disease, leukodystrophy, demyelination, and radiation effects. Spasticity, muscle weakness, paralysis, hyper-reflexia and movement disorder may be the clinical features associated with white matter disease that need to be evaluated thoroughly.
Avatar m tn My concern is that even when I try to push my heart rate up, the best I can do is about 156 BPM and I start to feel a loss of muscle control/muscle weakness, and I cannot control my breathing. I cannot hold this heart rate for more than 30 seconds or so before starting to feel this way. When I stop, my heart rate does drop quickly and in short order I feel fine. And, if I keep my heart rate 150 BPM or below, my endurance is great.
Avatar f tn Voltaren Gel Husband has been backwards and forwards to the GP for various things including, severe fatigue, memory loss, a few episodes of confusion, blue lips (not constant but at various times of the day), muscle weakness, and back and hip pain. Bloods have been taken and doesn't show anything and a chest x-ray has been given also showing nothing. The GP now says it is 'probably one of those things' or 'his Bipolar'.
