Avatar f tn This is supported by large, randomized clinical trials, including the Heart Protection Study (HPS) and the Prospective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER). The HPS was a large statin trial and included 20,536 participants who were followed over a 5-year period. Also, the Jupiter Study, which involved approximately 18,000 patients on Crestor 20mg, had absolutely no data to suggest that a statin has any effect on the neurologic system, including loss of memory.

Avatar f tn My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it. Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol?

Avatar m tn Effective in June 2011 the FDA recommends limiting the dose of simvastatin to a maximum dose of 40 mg, with the exception of patients already taking simvastatin 80 mg daily for a period of greater than 12 months who have not developed any myalgia side effects. The FDA make this restriction because at the highest dose of simvastatin 80 mg daily the incidence of serious myopathy was higher than using other available statins.

The Simvastatin will help keep plaque from building up in your kidneys which can cause more damage. When It comes to your health, especially serious problems, a person needs to be pro-active. If you're not comfortable with a particular physician it may be time to change. Try to get references from friends, neighbors etc. Hope you can find some answers!

428155 tn?1203688894 As I was taking simvastatin, I was in fibrillation 17% of the time; 1 month after I stopped simvastatin, the level was down to 0%. I am now experimenting with alternative cholesterol control methods: Omega 3 gels, ground linseed, charcoal. I may also try red yeast rice extract, which got my cardiologist excited, since it is supposed to be quite effective too. Red yeast rice was, in fact, used to synthetise the first statin. Avatar n tn Hi Everyone. I am trying to get some answers regarding the treatment of an elderly male in the UK. He has been diagnosed with heart failure and has a leaky valve and some irregular heart rythums. At the moment he still gets breathless after walking up a few stairs and I'm not happy with this situation. He also has a persistent cough which may be linked to his medication. He does have some water retention in lower legs.
Avatar m tn Another thought- has he been eating solid foods or is he only taking in liquids? If he has only been taking in non-solid food, this could wind up causing bulk not to form in stools.
