Simvastatin and memory loss

Common Questions and Answers about Simvastatin and memory loss

Avatar m tn According to the FDA and the NIH, there is no link to statin use and memory loss. Many would like to have us believe there is, but there have been no studies or trials that show any data to indicate that statin use causes memory loss. The statement above is from the FDA which says specifically there is NO LINK to statin use and memory loss but it was seen in the study group so the FDA wants the public to be aware of that fact alone.
Avatar f tn The levels of cholesterol are influenced by the amount of thyroid hormones in circulation. As the thyroid gland becomes increasing inactive (hypothyroidism) cholesterol levels rise. Labs can show higher total cholesterol, lower HDL "good cholesterol", higher LDL "bad cholesterol" and higher triglycerides. When thyroid hormones are brought back into balance cholesterol generally returns to normal. "From WebMD New Warnings on Cholesterol-Lowering Statins: "Feb.
Avatar n tn twice a day (after two/three months now I have not noticed any differences) and my Heart Dr. has me on atenolol and simvastatin. I take vitiman supplements also but I seem to be in a downward spiral. My Family Dr. indicated that I may be experiencing a"Pump-Head" reaction. I have had an MRI/MRA and my nureologist has indicated that there were some "spikes" but offered nothing else. I am continuing to lose ground and dropping out of many activities.
Avatar n tn A friend of mine who is not taking statins because her cholesterol is normal, but had memory loss and the doctor found out that she had a vitamin B12 deficiency. Avatar m tn 28, 2012 -- Memory loss, confusion, high blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes are possible side effects of the popular cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins, the FDA warns. Brand name and generic versions of statin drugs must carry these warnings on their labels, the FDA today announced.
1806721 tn?1510192923 Also not mentioned, the FDA is eliminating the risk of liver damage from the list of side effects and that the link to Memory loss, confusion, high blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes are not proven, only an observation and NO LINK HAS BEEN PROVEN. This is typical anti statin rhetoric with only part of the data being given and the rest either ignored or taken out of context.

Avatar m tn My mother has a numb toe too and has Hashimoto's thyroiditis (most common cause of hypothyroidism). She did try my thyroid medication for a short period of time and said she noted an improvement in her numb toe. She has normal TSH, free T3 and free T4 therefore no doctor will prescribe her thyroid medication. She has plenty of symptoms including the most obvious..a third of her eyebrows are missing.
Avatar f tn Am experiencing shortness of breath, lightheadedness, arrythmias, and feeling very tired at times I have memory loss and confusion. I am on flecanide and metoporol. I had flu in October and also put on simvastatin symptoms of junctional rhythm started in same time frame. Do I have cardiomyopathy? And how serious is all this. Ep showed great arteries and I've stopped simvastatin as I thought this might be the problem with junctional rhythm.
Avatar m tn The FDA requires warnings that statins may increase the risk of liver damage, memory loss and confusion, elevated blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, muscle weakness (for certain statins). Increasing blood sugar levels can lead to weight gain.
Avatar m tn Using statins, however, can have side effects, including memory loss, muscle problems and increased diabetes risk. A new study explains why statins are more beneficial in some cases than others and highlights the importance of weighing individual risk when considering statins as a preventive measure. ...
Avatar m tn in 1998. she is now struggling with memory loss tremors, walking vision etc. she is now age 65. her doctor has her on25mg toprol, 40mg simvastatin, 25mg levothyroxin, and 2.5mg ambeim. her neurologist has her on depakote er 500mg once per day and 10mg namenta twice per day. seems to me that the side effects of most of the doctor's meds. could possibly causing her problems or contributing to them, i would like to try taking her off all but the depakote and namenda and see if she has improvement.
Avatar m tn I think what has upset a lot of people is the new findings in some patients who suffer from memory loss and other problems associated with statins. Perhaps if someone has normal cholesterol, they shouldn't be put on statins at all, but it does seem they are automatically given to almost all heart patients as a precaution.
Avatar m tn I saw an EENT and he sees nothing wrong with my ears. I also stop taking all my vitamins and simvastatin just to see if that will help. Have you heard of this before. My dose was a childs dose (.5 mg).
Avatar n tn There are risks of more sever side effects but they are very, very rare. They include muscle damage, loss of memory, neuropathy and liver damage. I'm sure the doctor will have a more complete response.
Avatar n tn If I bent my knee near its maximum extent (such as when kneeling, crouching or climbing into bed), I experienced an incredibly painful tearing/burning sensation in the area of my patellar tendon. I would immediately react and straighten my knee and the pain would completely dissipate within several minutes. Afterward the area would feel about 50% numb, as if injected with a mild local anesthetic that was slowly wearing off, for several hours.
Avatar f tn My muscular symptoms have basically disappeared, but I still have great fatigue, lack of appetite, and of course, unwelcome weight loss. (I'm a 73 year-old woman, 5' tall, 98# or that less.) The very disturbing thing is that most of the medical community is unaware of the dangers of Gadolinium.
15860670 tn?1443544854 Yes, I fill tired and drained all the time and I can't sleep. I have heard that both beta-blockers and statin drugs will cause Diabetes. I have been testing my glucose levels every day and they are in the low range of Diabetes.
Avatar f tn I have been feeling physically sick, tired, uncoordinated (I fell down a flight of stairs last week), my memory is poor, I'm having trouble concentrating and problem solving. My spatial awareness seems pretty limited. My vision appears to be variable but it could be explained by living in what is essentially a building site. I have been feeling stressed and I have been binge eating. Emotionally I have been OK. Kind of. There have been events which have triggered me.
1516034 tn?1298600949 Thank you for your response.. As I mentioned, the history s broad and varied. For the last 18 months or so I have been poked, prodded and tested for everything from low testosterone to thyroid and everything is in normal range except the testosterone which was very low. During two treadmill stress tests I went into vTach within 3 minutes and rapid heart rate occurs with even minor stress (stairs short walk). On the other side of the coin, I hit bradycardia at times without explanation.

907968 tn?1292625804 Of course it's relentless and without justification. As I said, you have a known value X but an unknown value Y. The AHA have given you the X but won't put themselves on the line to state a Y value. Each Doctor can and seems to decide their own value for Y and this is dangerous. There have been numerous cases where low cholesterol has caused concern regarding mental problems such as memory loss, yet the drug companies simply shrug their shoulders as if to say "ignore it".
Avatar m tn What about memory loss? Is that an issue? Dr. Gau: Memory loss is an interesting one. It's been looked at in several different ways. In case-control studies, when they followed these studies, they found that there appeared to be less progression of dementia, or cognitive loss of function, in people that were on statins vs. not on statins.
