535822 tn?1443976780 A new review published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE confirms that Pandemrix, a swine flu vaccine produced by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is responsible for causing an up to 1700 percent increase in narcolepsy among children and teenagers under 17 years of age. Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
589816 tn?1332976771 Recently the whooping cough vaccine has been shown to be the cause of an outbreak of Narcolepsy in children , do some research there was a report done on findings recently ..
Avatar f tn It can be caused by viruses or certain vaccines (for example, H1N1 vaccine was notorious for causing a swath of narcolepsy cases in children). I believe I am genetically predisposed and contracted narcolepsy after either my MMR or my T/D vaccine when I was a young teenager.
1287446 tn?1313947638 The essential features of sleepiness in narcolepsy is irresistible attacks of refreshing sleep that occur almost daily (at least 3x per week) over at least 3 months. Narcolepsy generally produces cataplexy, which most commonly presents as brief episodes (seconds to minutes) of sudden, bilateral loss of muscle tone precipitated by emotions, typically laughing and joking.
535822 tn?1443976780 That is why I am very much in favor of all children in the public school receiving mandatory vaccines...100% of them. I do not agree it is the "mindless pushing of vaccines". I think we forget how many people died of horrible diseases prior to the availability of vaccines. Most people my age have never seen the death's caused by horrific disease.
Avatar f tn I encourage you to research narcolepsy and if it has the ring of truth go see a neurologist. Also i have been diagnosed with a small pituitary gland tumor witch may be contributing to my symptoms my doctor says unlikely. However i have read numerous reports relating pituitary gland tumors with excessive sleepiness.
Avatar n tn memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, taste hallucinations, smell hallucinations, visual hallucinations, and twitchy feelings and weakness and paralysis in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy. In fact, often times, people don't have "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too.
Avatar f tn I have seen signs of delays in children, and this little boy definately has many. Is it possible he may have a form of autism? And if so, how do I address his parents on the subject?
Avatar m tn We have a blended family. There is a 8 year old who is scaring us all with signs of trouble to come. He is mean, hurting animals and younger children. He says he doesn't care, hates everyone and is totally unresponsive to everything we try. We have normal rules for him. We have tried time-outs,losing privileges.Talking,bargaining. He wants to be rewarded for being good. Totally refuses to move or walk.He hates the zoo,the park, the movies.
1704625 tn?1310708761 I too just signed up to this site in hopes of finding ways to help my 9year old son manage narcolepsy/cataplexy. I'm finding diet, sleep schedule and exercise are key to getting thru day happily. SUGAR and CHOCOLATE never help. I'm curious to know if either of you received flumists prior to onset symptoms?
Avatar m tn memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy, and it can be exacerbated by the hormone shifts that happen with menstrual cycles. In fact, often times, people don't have "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too.
Avatar m tn *Seeing or hearing things when you’re drowsy or starting to dream before you’re fully asleep. *Suddenly feeling weak or losing control of your muscles when you’re laughing, angry, or experiencing other strong emotions. *Dreaming right away after going to sleep or having intense dreams *Feeling paralyzed and unable to move when you’re waking up or dozing off. If this continues, contact a doctor.
Avatar f tn I'm a limbo lander and my new genius neuro just dx'ed me with narcolepsy w/ cataplexy. He did this based on how I described my fatigue. He said I was tired not fatigued. I've since been researching narcolepsy & cataplexy. Most of us complain about being fatigued but we don't go into details. My new neuro thankfully asked for details.
Avatar m tn 24 years old white male, fair skinned with dark blonde hair, 6''0", 195lbs, in shape and athletic (work out and jog 5-6 days of the week). University educated and work in government policy, 9:00-5:00. Previously was a heavy weekend drinker, but have given up alcohol due to dx of narcolepsy (and I get very bad hangovers). Do not use recreational drugs.
Avatar n tn Is it possible I have developed some minor form of Narcolepsy? My husband is very worried, thinking it might even have something to do with the brain. This is not like me at all! Thank you in advance for any input!
1066766 tn?1254995664 have you ever been tested for narcolepsy. Do you get very week after emotions such as laughter, crying. How about (well the term I use for my cataplexy) a form of narcolespy "passing out" only to wake up and not remember what happened. These are some of the few symptoms of my narcolepsy.
Avatar n tn It is caused by a dysfunction of the brain mechanism that controls sleeping and waking. If you have narcolepsy, you may have “sleep attacks” while in the middle of talking, working, or even driving.
Avatar f tn In my case my brother and sister in law are twins, so my children (OE their children my have twins) but on my side of the family my moms cousins are twins, so everyone was freaking out that I was having twins. But I'm not, at least not this pregnancy lol.
Avatar f tn Wow! I have to say how nice it is to know you are not a freak and that other people have this horrible problem. I can go back as far as 7 years of age and remember having anxiety, It's so sad to think a child would have to deal with such a thing. I now take Lexapro and feel alot better. Not 100% but I guess as good as it's gonna get for me. I recently noticed alot of anxiety signs in my 9 year old daughter. It's apparently something you can pass on to your children.
Avatar f tn The vast majority of doctors have absolutely no idea what it is or what it looks like, and no routine lab tests, MRI, CT scan, x-ray or anything of that nature will detect it. 75% of people with narcolepsy never get diagnosed in their lifetime. It doesn't look the way you think it looks. Common misdiagnoses are depression, epilepsy, and migraines. I struggled for years to find an answer, and was misdiagnosed several times.
Avatar f tn He does have sleep apea but he also has narcolepsy.
Avatar n tn What are her chances of becoming diabetic? Her doctor said hypoglycemia sometimes precedes diabetes in children. Is is possible to "grow out of" hypoglycemia? If so, what are the chances of this happening?
765828 tn?1306263868 I'm not quite sure if this pertains to my being Narcoleptic, but as of late, I find myself slipping in and out of consciousness. It's not like closing my eyes and waking up. My surroundings appear suddenly and I'm confused. I don't know what I've been doing, how long I've been doing it, etc. That in general freaked me out when it first started happening. But what bothers me now is that I'm finding all sorts of bruises (massive ones) and cuts all over my body.
1704625 tn?1310708761 Which sent me into the second sleep study, all night and all day study, which came back extremely high for narcolepsy. It seems that I can fall asleep in less than 7 minutes, I begin dreaming quickly and much more frequent than normal in extended intervals. I believe that I have been asleep when I was really awake and awake when I was really asleep. However, unlike, the 15 minute naps being completley refreshing, they are not always.
Avatar f tn I am a 19 year old male in college. Starting around my freshman year of high school I noticed I was falling asleep in all my classes every day. I definitely wasn’t getting the best sleep but I was usually getting around 7 or 8 hours a night. This went on all throughout high school. When I got my license at age 16 things got worse.

Avatar f tn symptoms disappeared with some quality sleep over time. A diagnosis of narcolepsy can radically affect your life in regards to driving license rights and insurability. I wouldn't accept that label until there's nothing else to do to help your symptoms. Then after that, it is what it is.
612876 tn?1355514495 It would be great if you could click the green "post a question" button at the top of the page, and put all of your questions about narcolepsy there. I have narcolepsy myself, and would be happy to answer your questions. Thank you so much for your input here.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CFIDS in 1994. Narcolepsy in 2005. I get basically no stage 4 or Rem sleep at night. Its no wonder why our mind and muscles can't heal themselves. I can go into almost instant dreaming during day (MSLT naps). I haven't been able to get anyone to help me figure out how to correct my sleep cycle. If you get any ideas, let me know. (I am on meds to help sleep and keep me awake at the right times, but it hasn't helped the sleep cycles.
