Avatar f tn Pleuritis and Pulmonary embolism are other possibilities causing shortness of breath with chest pain and referred pain to left shoulder. A CT scan of the chest can rule out both. Chances are that you could be having gastro esophageal reflux (GERD), where the food in your stomach is thrown up into your food pipe or esophagus. This also causes burning sensation or discomfort in the chest area.

Another possibility that can explain the pain is pericarditis. It causes chest pain aggravated by laughing yawning and deep breathing and also causes radiation of pain to arms. Again an EKG, heat echo and chest X-ray is required.
Avatar m tn The inflammation around the joint area gives sharp pain on taking a breath. This can also cause tenderness on pressing the area which pains. An orthopedic doctor can diagnose this for you. Generally there is no cause. However it can be due to infection, blow, injury, or fibromyalgia. It usually goes away on its own. Otherwise it can be treated with muscle relaxants, and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.

Avatar n tn It has happened multiple times where its just a sharp pain when I take a deep breath. Today it has happened throughout the day and I don't remember it lasting this long before. I don't know what it is, can someone relate? I'm not sick, not aware of infections. I do have allergies/sinus problems if that contributes?

Avatar n tn Usually taking a deep breath pain is not a heart issue, however, the exception would be complications of pericarditis including constrictive pericarditis and pericardial effusion. For some insight there is a sac that surrounds the heart and in between the sac and heart muscle there exists some fluids that aids the heart's functionality and complications include inflammation (pericarditis) with pericardial effusion.

Avatar f tn The pain is sharp and worsens when taking a deep breath which is often due to involvement of pleuracausing pleuritic chest pain. You are 23 years of age and not constantly immobile due to your profession, hence chances of this chest pain being due to pulmonary embolism are less. However you can consult a physician and get it examined. Pulmonary angiogram is the best test for pulmonary embolism. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar m tn I can reproduce the pain by taking a deep breath and tightening the muscles in my chest. Also hurts during random times during the day. it feels like really sharp pain, almost like someone is slideing a knife through my ribs. Also hurts sometimes when i lift my arms. I have seen a doctor and have done pulamary function tests, ekg's, and chest x-rays; all of which came back normal. Was perscribed ibeprofen, which did not help. I was finally dignosed with being out of shape!
Avatar n tn ve started to get a mild shortness of breath, that only seems bad when I actually focus on it mentally. The chest pain is sharp and at the right side of my chest, *above* my ribcage, and just above and to the side of my nipple. I guess you can say it's at my upper sternum. I'm also somewhat stopped up in the nose. The pain only hits when I move around, or smoke cigarettes.
Avatar f tn s because I took a deep breath and that happened or if the breath just made it worsen.
Avatar f tn One night I had sharp pain that hurt very badly when I breathed (causing shortness of breath) in the left breast area that kept me up for about 20 minutes. I went to the doctor a few days later and she performed an EKG, D-Dimer, and cholesterol check with lipids. I told her I'd been sick a few weeks before with a lot of congestion, mostly in the throat that caused thick mucus when I coughed.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure if the pain is in my abdomen. It's somewhere below my right ribs. The sharp pain would just come & go. And the pain worsens when I try to take a deep breath. I usually hold onto the area where the pain is & wait till it disappears. I've been having it for quite awhile.Any idea what this means or is it like something normal? Thanks.
