Seroquel for bipolar disorder

Common Questions and Answers about Seroquel for bipolar disorder

Avatar f tn They were first used for serious mental illness like schizophrenia, and then for bipolar disorder, and then for the thing we 'call' bipolar in children, that really isn't bipolar disorder. Seroquel is one of the most sedating of the group (zyprexa is quite sedating as well) and so it has been used as a 'non addictive sleep medication' in very low doses-- although many institutions are trying now to ban it for that purpose for cost concerns.
Avatar m tn I have bipolar/panic disorder and every time I took seroquel I had a massive panic attack, ate a lot, then slept for 12+ hours. The longest I have ever slept on seroquel is 72 hours straight... it will knock you out. It also makes you feel sluggish and lethargic throughout the day... not even my Dexedrine helped. I've tried ambien, trazodone, and risperdal for sleep but the best medicine I've found is klonopin.

1168718 tn?1464987135 I was put on klonipin and only took it the first time which made me sleep for way too long and hubby had a hard time waking me. I took Seroquel and, everyone still thinks I'm crazy, but I swear that I laid there awake but could not move and my heart was throbbing like crazy. I thought I was going to die. I was trying to say something to my husband but couldn't. At any rate, I never took it again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, My mother is a 73 yr-old Korean lady. She has a bipolar disorder. She had been committed to a mental hospital in Jan 95 for a month due to a deep depression. Although she was still depressed I brought her home as soon as she had been stabilized, and she she has been living with me for five years now.
1055770 tn?1254239376 Bipolar 1 and 2, both have this symtom, and I have experienced it for years, losing the trust and friendship of family and aquantainces. I would suggest that you contact your GP and get the appropriate meds for this, as with mine, it got worse as the years went on to the point where I was physically violent.
Avatar n tn The only way to be diagnosed is to see a psychiatrist and be assessed. There are many drugs used to treat bipolar disorder. Some are Seroquel, Abilify, Lithium, and Risperdal, though there are many more. Depression is just being down and sometimes having a normal time between periods of depression. Bipolar disorder has depressive episodes but also hypomanic or manic episodes. I would suggest going to for more information.
222267 tn?1253305810 Therefore, physicians who elect to use ziprasidone for extended periods should periodically re-evaluate the long-term risks and benefits of the drug for the individual patient (see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION). Bipolar Mania Initial Treatment Oral ziprasidone should be administered at an initial daily dose of 40 mg BID with food.
Avatar f tn Have your doctor test you for bipolar disorder! Anxiety and insomnia are two of the manic symptoms. Of course mood fluctuations are a red flag! I would get tested, especially if your medications are not helping at all. You might need a mood stabilizer along with your anti-depressent, to help with the manic symptoms. Bipolar II is a lower level of bipolar disorder where you have more depression and hypomania. Talk to your doctor! good luck.
Avatar n tn You have done everything and more than you could be expected, and even though we are essentially sick from our disorder - we are still accountable for our actions. My advice, and this is coming from a bipolar disorder patient - stable (Thank God) is that you need to allow him to make his mistakes. Sometimes it's those really hard pitfalls that make us realize how sick we really are - it was that way with me. I hit rock hard bottom before I got help.
Avatar f tn Hi I use when needed clonazepam for irritability, I have Bipolar Disorder and I am on Lithium and Seroquel also, and Prozac when depressed, clonazepam when either low or high as an extra weapon to curb my snappy head. problem i find if used too regularly when depressed is it can make me worse.
Avatar n tn She also currently and historically takes 10mg of lexapro and 3mg daily of clonopin. My question is - Is Nuerontin FDA approved for bipolar disorder and is it an effective monotype therapy for the disorder? Would you reccomend other alternatives such as depacote or tegretol. She did quite well on depacote about 6 years back but it was discontinued because of hair loss. Also she is very fatigued all the time. Is this the function of her medicene?
1305767 tn?1361196276 I hope that your doctor asked you many more questions to determine if you had bipolar disorder than just about racing thoughts. Bipolar disorder cannot and should not be diagnosed only on the basis of that. The three FDA-approved uses for Seroquel are for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and together with antidepressants in Major Depressive Disorder. I do know it is sometimes prescribed for people with the above disorders who have trouble sleeping, as it knocks you out pretty effectively.
1326513 tn?1276521601 (3) acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder alone or with lithium or divalproex; (4) long-term treatment of bipolar disorder with lithium or divalproex; and (5) schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn two times daily for years now. I have also taken ambien for even longer as it took some time to diagnose bipolar. I have bipolar two. Be sure you know the difference and talk about it with your doctors to be sure you can get all the knowledge and understanding of your diagnosis as possible. Depakote is down right scary. I am in a group and my friends have gained huge amounts of weight and seem to be returning to depressive states like with any other drug.My psych.
Avatar f tn As best as I understand, Schizoid Tendencies mean you have a tendency to think and act in ways a person with Schizophrenia or Schizoid Personality Disorder normally would due to their mental issues. A mood disorder can be anything from Bipolar Disorder to Major Depression and all their subtypes. Depression and Bipolar Disorder can get so bad that they turn psychotic during the throws of a severe mood disturbance and mimic symptoms of Schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn My daughter has been taking medication for bipolar disorder for about a year ( she was taking depakote 500 mg). She was starting have nightmare regarding death, and her medication was changed to seroquel. About 3 to 4 weeks after starting seroquel she had a seizure ( 1 at home and 2 in the hospital). She was taken off the seroquel and but on Lamitcal and has had 5 more seizures. Is her bipolar disorder causing the seizures?
Avatar f tn My sister is bipolar and just had a baby and was taking meds for it and they told her she could continue but she chose not to and didn't take any the last two trimesters of her pregnancy because it made her nervous.
Avatar n tn I started out on Abilify for bipolar. They added in Seroquel and Lamictal, which are helping. I found Abilify to be helpful, and I haven't had any side effects with it. As with most disorders, there is a genetic part to it, but it's not the only part. My mom is bipolar as well, but environmental and other factors influenced my becoming bipolar. Hope this helps.
605458 tn?1265086851 I suppose it will help with my Borderline Personality Disorder/Chronic Depression aswell, considering it is prescribed mostly for Bipolar, and Bipolar and BPD run on par with each other. I have been on nearly every med known to man for panic disorder/depression/sleep since I was 12 and I'm only 18. These include Largactyl, Valium, Deptran, Pristiq, Prozac, Luvox, Lumin, Xanax, Serepax, Avanza, Stillnox... need I continue?
Avatar f tn I found seroquel (quetiapine) really helpful to me for bipolar but I stopped taking it when I found out I was pregnant, just stopped it altogether, and although I was told by my psychiatrist that there shouldn't have been any withdrawals I would totally disagree.
Avatar n tn There are 400 combinations of meds for bipolar, so it isn't easy. Also, exercise is really good for depression. Getting out of the house is good. It is hard to do since you don't even want to move when it gets bad, but it is worse to just sit there and let it swallow you up. If he wants to get better he's going to have to try to fight it and get himself out of the house, and not just to a doctor visit, but like walk the dog or go to the park. Just get out and move around.
Avatar n tn It was found that bipolar patients were twice as likely as healthy subjects to develop autoimmune thyroiditis. Although associated genes for bipolar disorder and autoimmune thyroiditis have yet to be identified, autoimmune thyroiditis may be an endophenotype for bipolar disorder. However, many factors act together to produce the illness. People with bipolar disorder often have abnormal thyroid gland function.
Avatar m tn I've read and read and talked and talked and even personally experimented with my own seroquel dosing. I'm a card carrying bipolar and typical of such folk have tried everything out there in pharm-world alone and in combination. For me, Seroquel is the ticket. I have one problem. A few years ago I made a move to a more healthy lifestyle which includes diet, exercise, yoga, and meditation - all good things. I even went back to work.
1011752 tn?1269245119 Oh, I also wanted to mention MedHelp also has a very good forum for bipolar ....there are alot of posters there with really helpful advice. I think on the forum page you would click on MENTAL HEALTH than you will find it from there.
