Seroquel and bipolar disorder

Common Questions and Answers about Seroquel and bipolar disorder

seroquel

Avatar f tn They were first used for serious mental illness like schizophrenia, and then for bipolar disorder, and then for the thing we 'call' bipolar in children, that really isn't bipolar disorder. Seroquel is one of the most sedating of the group (zyprexa is quite sedating as well) and so it has been used as a 'non addictive sleep medication' in very low doses-- although many institutions are trying now to ban it for that purpose for cost concerns.
Avatar m tn seroquel is a nasty drug w.r.t. weight gain; although it was my Godsend for me. i read once that even if you stop it your body metabolism doesn't return to your original state. whether this is true or not you have to give it time to be able to notice a real change. i have gained 60 pounds on it alone although my dose is only 100mg. Apparently it increases the tryglesrides and makes me feeling starved all the time.
Avatar m tn I have bipolar/panic disorder and every time I took seroquel I had a massive panic attack, ate a lot, then slept for 12+ hours. The longest I have ever slept on seroquel is 72 hours straight... it will knock you out. It also makes you feel sluggish and lethargic throughout the day... not even my Dexedrine helped. I've tried ambien, trazodone, and risperdal for sleep but the best medicine I've found is klonopin.
232264 tn?1191252080 i just want to say because i been looking threw these forms for awhile now...ppl say that ohhhh seroquel causes waight gain... wrong i been on it for 2 years for bipolar and mabe 2 pounds gainged ppl are bsing because the people that say i gained 100 pounds in 3 months are bull shiting you they are just lazy as hell and don't want to do anything...
Avatar n tn my son took seroquel to sleep...along with the other antidepressant he was on. it was his experience that without it, he could not fall asleep. when he decided to come off of it, it took many months before he got a normal sleep pattern back.
214255 tn?1205639236 Seroquel is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression). Is that what he gave them to you for? The side effects listed were too many to list here. Be careful.
Avatar m tn If it were me, i would take up to 30 mg of diazepam instead of the seroquel.....and read the post above concerning one individuals experience with seroquel......lots of natural things that do work also. Check out the amino acid protocol and the Thomas Recipe posted at bottom right of page.
1168718 tn?1464987135 Back when I took it they didn't think I had MS, they thought bipolar disorder, then with the psych drugs, my condition worsened and they gave me more meds. Til I got smart and did what I felt was right which 2 years later turned out to be the MS. The more I thought about it today the more I wanted to beg you not to take it. There are so many other ones they can give. Please let us know how things are...
Avatar f tn I am 30 yrs old and was diagnosed earler this yr with bipolar disorder,PTSD, and anxiety disorder. I have been feeling really good but here lately I have been seeing things that aren't there and hearing voices. I have also been having very weird dreams. I am on seroquel but have not been taking it every day like I am supposed to. i have been so depressed that I sleep all day and have been thinking about death alot. I need to know what to do. I can't afford to go see my psychiatrist.
1055770 tn?1254239376 From what I understand Bipolar Disorder's mood swings and phases can cause things like this such as when you're manic and angry you might be impulsive and act on your anger in ways without even thinking about it. As for predicting things, I don't know maybe you're just getting lucky or the spirit of Nostradamus is possessing you or something.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, My mother is a 73 yr-old Korean lady. She has a bipolar disorder. She had been committed to a mental hospital in Jan 95 for a month due to a deep depression. Although she was still depressed I brought her home as soon as she had been stabilized, and she she has been living with me for five years now.
Avatar n tn She also currently and historically takes 10mg of lexapro and 3mg daily of clonopin. My question is - Is Nuerontin FDA approved for bipolar disorder and is it an effective monotype therapy for the disorder? Would you reccomend other alternatives such as depacote or tegretol. She did quite well on depacote about 6 years back but it was discontinued because of hair loss. Also she is very fatigued all the time. Is this the function of her medicene?
Avatar f tn Hi I use when needed clonazepam for irritability, I have Bipolar Disorder and I am on Lithium and Seroquel also, and Prozac when depressed, clonazepam when either low or high as an extra weapon to curb my snappy head. problem i find if used too regularly when depressed is it can make me worse.
Avatar n tn The only way to be diagnosed is to see a psychiatrist and be assessed. There are many drugs used to treat bipolar disorder. Some are Seroquel, Abilify, Lithium, and Risperdal, though there are many more. Depression is just being down and sometimes having a normal time between periods of depression. Bipolar disorder has depressive episodes but also hypomanic or manic episodes. I would suggest going to NAMI.org for more information.
Avatar n tn i am bipolar and adhd(mild to moderate) I am also on a mood stabilizer (lamictal). The adderall actually helps me with my motivation, energy and focus. I do think, however, that since adderall is a stimulant, it would make someone who is experiencing a manic episode, more manic, if they were not on a mood stabilizer. It seems that maybe her doctor thought she had ADHD, so he gave her adderall.
Avatar f tn I am a 19 year old male from the UK and believe I have bipolar II disorder and also fibromyalgia although haven't been diagnosed with either. I used to be on fluoxetine (prozac) for "depression" and have had counselling in the past which was a complete waste of time for me as my problems seem to be biological/biochemical. After extensive research over the years and alot of thinking time and self analysis I have self diagnosed myself (I believe quite accurately).
222267 tn?1253305810 hi my name is Ashley I am 24 years old and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age17. I have been on many different medicines. I am now on seroquel 200mg and cymbalta 120 mg a day this combination of meds has helped me alot. The cymbalta exceeds the maximum amount but it helps me with my anxiety. I hope that you can get on some meds that help you. Don't give it it will happen and you will get better. Seeing a therapist on a regular basis has also helped me.
Avatar f tn Even though he has not diagnosed you bipolar you are on bipolar medications (Lamictal and Seroquel). Does he know you quit taking the Lamictal? I wonder why he has you on those if you are not diagnosed BP? Also, why Beta Blockers? Is that supposed to help your anxiety? Have you contacted someone to get a second opinion yet? There are good psychiatrist and bad ones as well. Trust me, I had a really bad one and it almost cost me my life! Keep up posted!
Avatar n tn You have done everything and more than you could be expected, and even though we are essentially sick from our disorder - we are still accountable for our actions. My advice, and this is coming from a bipolar disorder patient - stable (Thank God) is that you need to allow him to make his mistakes. Sometimes it's those really hard pitfalls that make us realize how sick we really are - it was that way with me. I hit rock hard bottom before I got help.
1326513 tn?1276521601 (3) acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder alone or with lithium or divalproex; (4) long-term treatment of bipolar disorder with lithium or divalproex; and (5) schizophrenia.
1305767 tn?1361196276 I hope that your doctor asked you many more questions to determine if you had bipolar disorder than just about racing thoughts. Bipolar disorder cannot and should not be diagnosed only on the basis of that. The three FDA-approved uses for Seroquel are for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and together with antidepressants in Major Depressive Disorder. I do know it is sometimes prescribed for people with the above disorders who have trouble sleeping, as it knocks you out pretty effectively.
Avatar n tn project, getting into a horrible relationship . . . the mania is so hard on family and friends. I do know that bipolar disorder can run in families and, as my family found the hard way, so do thyroid disorders. Sit down and talk to some of your family members and close friends. Have them level with you even though they may not want to hurt your feelings. Have them describe your "mood swings" and if you seem to get depressed.
Avatar f tn As best as I understand, Schizoid Tendencies mean you have a tendency to think and act in ways a person with Schizophrenia or Schizoid Personality Disorder normally would due to their mental issues. A mood disorder can be anything from Bipolar Disorder to Major Depression and all their subtypes. Depression and Bipolar Disorder can get so bad that they turn psychotic during the throws of a severe mood disturbance and mimic symptoms of Schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn No bipolar disorder doesn't cause seizures and Lamictal and Depakoate are actually anti-convulsants. However, some medications as an adverse side effect can cause seizures. She needs to see a neurologist and get an EEG to determine the cause of the seizures. If it comes from one of the medications they can change it to another in the same class.
1011752 tn?1269245119 He started me on Lithium, and my current dose is 1200mg at bedtime. We discontinued the Seroquel, and started a slow and progressive decrease in the Abilify, with the end goal of discontinuing it. The decrease has taken place over a period of about 8 months. I am currently taking 3mg.
Avatar f tn My sister is bipolar and just had a baby and was taking meds for it and they told her she could continue but she chose not to and didn't take any the last two trimesters of her pregnancy because it made her nervous.

605458 tn?1539232408 I suppose it will help with my Borderline Personality Disorder/Chronic Depression aswell, considering it is prescribed mostly for Bipolar, and Bipolar and BPD run on par with each other. I have been on nearly every med known to man for panic disorder/depression/sleep since I was 12 and I'm only 18. These include Largactyl, Valium, Deptran, Pristiq, Prozac, Luvox, Lumin, Xanax, Serepax, Avanza, Stillnox... need I continue?
