Last week he had a Tonic Clonic seizure this happened after a very active day of therapy for his left hand which is still not responding, hours at a the YMCa working out and working with his Saebolt which opens and closes the hand. He did have 3 beers the previous day with a buddy and his wife thinks that is what caused it, but the neuorologiest said no.
Avatar f tn “It can manifest as an alteration in mental state, tonic or clonic movements, convulsions, and various other psychic symptoms. It is caused by a temporary abnormal electrical activity of a group of brain cells. The medical syndrome of recurrent, unprovoked seizures is termed epilepsy, but some seizures may occur in people who do not have epilepsy”. Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizure What are the symptoms? Have any of you seen the seizures while it is happening?

Avatar f tn i had a clonic-tonic seizure about 3 weeks ago. i was put on keppra and now am having a lot of confusion and am very tired and extremely moody. is this related to the seizure and or the medication?
Avatar n tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Seizure activity goes through the aura, tonic and clonic stages, which is grand mal seizures. Others are petit mal epilepsy, which is otherwise called as absence seizures. And temporal lobe seizures are known to cause altered sense of smell or taste. If her symptoms fall into these mentioned categories, it could be seizure activity, only an EEG (electroencephalogram) can help confirm this. This is done under the guidance of a neurologist.

Avatar f tn Once i did this next thing i knew i woke up sitting on my shower floor with my hair tangled on my shower knob, holding my head up. The only reason for me to believe it was a seizure is because i woke up to a loud banging noise, which happened to be my head hitting the wall continuously, but i didnt feel it and couldnt control it. once i stood up i was still very dizzy, confused and scared because i ended up completely turned around and on the ground of my shower.
461361 tn?1206520162 Tonic seizure: During the night she will wake approximately 5 seconds before the seizure and grasp my arm to let me know that one is imminent. When the seizure takes place she will become stiff, extend her right arm at a 90 degree angle (with the right hand curling slightly inward) and her eyes will go to the 2 o'clock position (from the perspective of an observer). She will remain in this position for approximately 15-20 seconds.
Avatar f tn He went 4 months without a seizure, then switched to the generic Dilantin and 2 weeks later had a partial seizure, then a tonic clonic seizure within 2 days, both at night while he was sleeping and again has no recollection. His Dilantin levels were low, he went back on the regular Dilantin and increased his dosage to 300mg in the am and 300mg at night. It's been 3 days and no seizures. Does he have Epilepsy?
Avatar n tn Do you have family history of seizure? How you know that it was tonic clonic? Describe your symptoms to the doctor, how you felt before and after the seizure. Ask doctor what could be the cause for seizure and whether medication is needed or not. Investigations like MRI and EEG are done to find out the cause. Relax, and avoid driving for a while till you see the doctor.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure if seizure disorder and epilepsy are the same these days? I'm a 43 year old female, no history of seizures, 2 year survivor of breast cancer, which made the discovery of benign cysts in my left temporal lobe. 6 months ago I started having severe headaches with almost stroke like symptoms with neurological deficits associated with them as well as an elevation in my stress levels. All my doctors tell me I have more stress in my life than they've seen in a while.
Avatar n tn (These symptoms continued, in varying degrees, for several hours.) About 45 minutes later, he had an urgent need to defecate, a seizure (tonic clonic), then violent vomiting. The hospital CT didn't disclose any problem, and subsequent MRI and EEG studies showed no brain or electrical abnormalities that would have triggered or resulted from the accident.
Avatar f tn On the ther hand, patients with complex partial seizures will have abnormal consciousness and may or may not remember any or all of the symptoms or events surrounding the seizure.
393986 tn?1303829575 Hello. A seizure is defined as an episode of central nervous system dysfunction. A seizure may or may not be accompanied by convulsions. Your seizures are unusual. Do you lose consciousness when you have the episode? usually convulsions are tonic (only spasms) or tonic - clonic (spasms followed by repeated contractions). An EEG confirms a seizure. Has it been done?
Avatar n tn Afterwards I feel shaky and my toes and left arm a re usually a little tingly. All of my other symptoms have gotten worse as well since the seizure. The insides of my calves often have a tearing/pinching like feeling. My heels are tingly a lot, joints hurt, headaches (sometimes just my eyeballs hurt-it's weird), I could go on. My doctor said she doesn't know why I had a grand-mal seizure. She says some of these symptoms can be brought on my "stress". I am not a depressed person.
Avatar f tn None of my doctors know what is going on or why they are happening. All the tests are negative, yet the symptoms are very real. The only time I do not have symptoms is while I am asleep or if I am intently concentrating on a task. So none of this makes any sense. The doctors say they do not even think it is dystonia, nothing totally fits. I am completely concious during an attack and aware of my surroundings, I am just unable to control my body.
Avatar f tn It was assumed to just be a one off grand mal /tonic colonic seizure. They can just happen randomly. And the fact I had a little infection, might have contributed. Sometimes it can take just a few changes in your body, all at once .. and whamoooo! My Neurologist also advised me not to drive, which it totally normal. Apparently if you have one there is a greater risk of you having another within 2 or 3 months (???) so they like to keep you safe until that time has passed.
Avatar n tn Lack of glucose energy to the brain can cause symptoms ranging from headache, mild confusion, and abnormal behavior, to loss of consciousness, seizure, and coma. Severe hypoglycemia can cause death. Symptoms of hypoglycemia occur at different levels of blood glucose in different patients. In most healthy individuals, symptoms of hypoglycemia may not occur until the glucose level drops below 45 mg/dl.
Avatar n tn she was taken off of the seizure medication and placed on inderol to control her heart. The seizures subsided, going from 2-3 a week to 2-3 per month, then slowing to 5 a year. Her doctor said she may outgrow them, or they could get worse during puberty. She will be 15 in June this year, and she has had 2 seizures in the last week. Her symptoms are first a severe sudden headache to the side of the head, and the feeling that someone is sitting on her chest and putting a pillow over her face.
1653487 tn?1303527762 e. tonic-clonic seizure, lasting anywhere from 2 to five min. or more. Called secondary generalized seizures. Partial seizures can be caused by scaring from an accident, a tumor, or for many reasons we don't yet understand. Primary generalized seizrues, of which there many kinds, not simply the classic tonic-clonic, involve the entire brain from the onset. In general, primary generalized seizures are easier to control with meds, but every case is different.
Avatar n tn I am sure you have seen her doctor by now. Her symptoms could be due to low blood pressure, postural hypotension (fall in blood pressure on standing), cervical spinal nerve compression, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), severe anemia, an underactive thyroid (called hypothyroidism), overactive thyroid (called hyperthyroidism), adrenal insufficiency (called Addison's disease), GERD or gastric reflux, and internal ear infections.
Avatar f tn sounds like a tonic clonic seizure to me, you lose total body control during one of those therefore you can wet yourself.
328328 tn?1261682204 I don't do any drugs, just a drink once in a blue moon. My son is 2 now and has had a seizure type attack. He has had them off and on (about 4) since the about 9m old. The first was a vaccume started it. The second was he got in the tub. Nothing sets if off (noise, bang head, etc.) Hes awake and standing, he first screams like he got hurt, he has little control of his body. I hold him his heart is racing to fast, his eyes move back and forth, (both at the same time).
1570846 tn?1295833227 When he's having a seizure one side of his mouth rises abnormally. and then he goes into full Tonic Clonic seizure. But as I said.. your DD's could be a once off seizure. I know of so many people that have a seizure and never have another one. You are going through such a tough time and I know exactly how you feel. Last year was like the year from hell for our family. My son's illness and my dear Mother's illness. And I know the feelings of guilt. But you do have to let them go.

393986 tn?1303829575 He seen my hip have myoclonic-tonic seizures. I tried to explain it is just the muscle spasms but he was not amused or convinced by it. Although he said it is unusual to see them go over and over like that, he says it can happen. I guess I am unlucky. BTW, I love the name Curiouzilla....
Avatar n tn About 10 days ago, he spiked a temp to 103 and had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure occur about 30 minutes later that lasted for 30-40 seconds. Had a second seizure 10 minutes later and turned blue in face and lips. EMS was called and went to ER. Temp still elevated 101.5 and had 3rd seizure in the ER approximately 4 hours after the first seizure. Admitted to floor and had 1 more seizure that was treated with Ativan.
Avatar n tn If the symptom is constant it is hard to believe that these symptoms are due to a seizure. However, if it is intermittent it is possible this could represent an aura (or warning sign). You should discuss this with your neurologist and perhaps a repeat EEG (brain wave test) should be performed. If there are still doubts, then consulting an epilepsy specialist is recommended. Good luck.
