seizure

Avatar n tn Is that a good choice for seizure medications? Are there any harmful side effects? What are the chances I will have another seizure while on Tegretol? I am starting off with 200mg before bed time, then 200mg before bed time and in the morning, then i'll finally be built up to 400mg twice a day. Will I ever be able to stop the medications? Will the seizure disorder ever go away?
1559533 tn?1308952161 Yes, anti-seizure medications (Tegretol, Gabapentin, Lyrica, etc) are used to treat neuropathic pain (things like Trigeminal Neuralgia or Dysthesias.) They can also be used to treat seizure disorders. They did not seem to effect my diagnosis. They did not effect my neuro exams, MRI, VEP, LP, etc.
Avatar n tn Persons with peripheral nerve hyperexcitability (neuromyotonia) can achieve periods of improvement from cramps by medical therapy. Studies have found that the long-term use of seizure medications in women with seizure disorders is associated with menstrual and infertility problems. However, your dose of tegretol may be low enough to cause significant menstrual and infertility abnormalities. Hope this helps.

Avatar m tn There have been some reports of memory loss and disturbance of other cognitive functions including alertness following Carbamazepine (Tegretol) use. The effect of the seizure focus in the frontal lobe can't be denied. The two combined together may be responsible for the memory loss.
Avatar n tn 5 yr. hx of seizures with an onset of encephalitis and chronic mono. She had one seizure a year 1997, 1998 and since March of 1999 has had increasing seizures even on medication. She was seen at NYU and diagnosed with left temporal lobe seizure disorder. Her MRI is normal but the Video EEG did show spiking and slowing during sleep, off medication. She had a major seizure while there. Since (Oct. 99)she has had three episodes. One generalized and lasted 14 mins.
Avatar n tn Most doctors will consider tapering the dosage and discontinuing seizure medicines after a seizure-free period of 2 years. Some doctors taper seizure medications over 6 weeks. There is this study that shows no difference whether the medications are tapered over a six-week or a nine-month period. One advantage of shorter taper period is that the outcome of the attempt to discontinue treatment may be known sooner, shortening the period of adjustment for the patient.(http://content.nejm.
Avatar f tn Could anyone who is on similar medication for BP give me some information on what their experience of such medications have been and if they have helped their condition? Is it a good idea to allow the doctor to treat me using these medications, what are the benefits and side effects. I am reluctant to start taking these drugs however I am at the point where I am finding daily life a real struggle and don't know what other options I have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Avatar n tn The vast majority of side effects from Nardil are from the interactions with foods and other medications. Tegratol is not one of the direct interfering medications and food. It takes several weeks for Nardil to have it's psychiatric effects. The biological action of Nardil is to irreversibly bind to the MAO enzyme located outside the mitochondrial membrane.
Avatar n tn This sounds sort of like me. I take Tegretol and haven't had a seizure since. But prior to my first seizure, I also had ringing in my ears. I was, however, able to stay coherent during the auras that I had. Nevertheless, they were quite annoying and a scary. Perhaps an MRI would be helpful.
Avatar n tn I can tell you that you pregnancy when you have epilepsy is possible, but you need to be followed very carefully by your doctors, and you need to discuss all of the treatment options, such as medication. Most doctors advise staying on medications as having a seizure when pregnant can decrease oxygen to the baby. There is a small increased rate of seizure in pregnancy, likely related to hormonal and metabolic changes.

Avatar n tn Yes, often times seizure medication will prevent generalization (grand mal) evolution of a seizure without being able to halt the initial phases of the seizure (aura or reduction of mental awareness). I would talk to his physician as there are many new medications on the market that may prevent the "trance" states. I hope things are corrected for your husband.

Avatar n tn I am posting for a friend who is newly dianosed and is concerned about the medications side affects for seizures. Understanding the need for patience for medication trial and error, can some one answer the following questions? Is there any seizure medicine that does not have excessive weight gain as a side effect? And which medicines dianosed for seizures impair driving the most? ========= Dear LA thanks for the question.
Avatar n tn Typically auras only last for 5-10 seconds before a seizure. However in patients taking medications they could last longer. Based on the fact that you are having a aura indicates that you have focal seizures (means they are coming from one area), as opposed to generalized. Seizures occur at any age. The MRI you had was most likely a routine MRI, at epilepsy centers, such as the one at the Cleveland Clinic, special sequences can be done, and an abnormality may be found.
