1559533 tn?1308948561 Yes, anti-seizure medications (Tegretol, Gabapentin, Lyrica, etc) are used to treat neuropathic pain (things like Trigeminal Neuralgia or Dysthesias.) They can also be used to treat seizure disorders. They did not seem to effect my diagnosis. They did not effect my neuro exams, MRI, VEP, LP, etc.
Avatar f tn ve had seizures in the past, and had another tonic clonic recently so my doctor upped my Lyrica (which was prescribed after the MS diagnosis) to seizure-control levels. I (honestly) thought I was doing great. The Lyrica was (in my opinion) helping me feel better, so I thought I was on the right combination of medications. Two days ago, after I had showered and washed my hair, I realized that I had patches of missing hair on my head.
Avatar m tn An NSAID is good for inflammation, Anti-Seizure (like Lyrica, Neurontin or Topamax) medications are good for nerve pain. If Lyrica made your fiance too drowsy, Topamax might be a better alternative. This is what I take instead. It's in the same class, but has different side effects. Many people do not get as drowsy. Muscle relaxers can help too. Everyone's cocktail is different, because everyone's reacts differently to medications.
1518178 tn?1290823315 Sometimes the anti-seizure meds taken for TN pain can cause dizziness as a side effect. Are you on any of the medications right now?
634733 tn?1316625992 Gabapentin and Lyrica are anti-seizure medications (this class of drugs also reduces neuropathic pain) that effect the voltage gating of calcium channels in the nervous system. Just about all of the anti-seizure medications "can" (but not always do) cause weight gain. These drugs decrease certain neurotransmitters and increase neuronal GABA levels.
Avatar n tn I have had FM for years now. They had me on some much ****. I even tried the Lyrica. I take no medications. All I am willing to take are vitamins. My sensitivity levels can not have the side effects of any medications.
1088430 tn?1259159773 Thank you to both for your advice! I know it's silly...I was just a little paranoid.
Avatar f tn I am sure you will be fine then. You'll just have to wait it out. The withdrawal symptoms will go away eventually. Is he offering you an alternative medication instead? Perhaps Lyrica would be a better option for you since Savella didn't work out? Lyrica is also approved to treat Fibromyalgia and it's also an anti-seizure medication.
Avatar m tn Since then, when I have seizure activity going on, it manifests itself as a headache rather than as an absence seizure or a grand mal seizure.
Avatar n tn I have had and reacted to Depakote, Neurontin, Lyrica, and Topamax. The Lyrica and Neurontin was originally for nerve pain and the Depakote and Topamax were for migraines.
Avatar f tn In June 2007, the FDA approved Lyrica as a treatment for Fibromyalgia. It was initially used/designed for seizure disorders - but like many medications physicians began using it off-label for other conditions. It is now widely used to treat (nerve) pain. It is the only medication that controls my neuropathic pain. All medications, including Aspirin - come with side effects. One of Lyrica's side effects is weight gain. Yup - I've gained 17lbs in a year.
Avatar m tn Will swelling and itching go away by continuing to take Lyrica. I started in my hands and feet. I have been taking it a month and the symptoms are daily but are mild and seem less and less. Today, it is only swelling on the top of my ear with slight itching. Should it continue taking it, because i heard that discontinuing could cause a seizure.
1218873 tn?1300091216 Twist, I am glad to hear that your doctor finally said to start the lyrica. for me the lyrica worked it just took a few days to get into my system to take the full effect. I hope this makes you feel better and you get the relief you deserve.
959341 tn?1246884689 s. I took Neurontin for a long time before Lyrica came on the market. With Lyrica, I had alot of swelling my legs and a craving for sweets. Whether a craving for sweets is a side-effect, I doubt the drug maker would admit it. But I did gain weight. And weight gain is my worst enemy. I have fought being over-weight most of the last 40 years. Neurontin works well for some people, so do anti-seizure medications.
1039200 tn?1314912008 Has anyone heard of Pregabalin (lyrica) for bipolar or anxiety? - my doctor wants me to try, but I have not heard about it before and would like to know if anyone here has tried it or knows anyone who has. Is it used as a mood stabiliser? - I can't find it on the web site ILADVOCATE recomended me a long time ago, does this mean it's not a mood stabiliser or just a new brand?
Avatar f tn Part of this I believe also is because the nurse saw (what we have been thinking is just dizzy spells) her have what she said looked to be an absence seizure. Lindz was up to use the restroom and suddenly got dizzy - grabbed me and didn't respond for a few seconds - that's what she's been doing for about 5 weeks - anyway the nurse immediately came to her and pinched her fingers and arms, turned around and Lindz answered "what?" She has no memory of that at all.
Avatar f tn I have stage 4 Ovarian. There are medications like Lyrica for Neuropathy. There are also anti seizure drugs such as Neurotin which are used for nerve pain.
Avatar n tn lyrica is mostly for nerve pain..I just had fusion...lyrica is of little help..side effects are not great..dizziness, loss of concentration etc..
1088430 tn?1259159773 This is especially the case with seizure medications (like lyrica), heart medications and SSRIs (which are all types of medications used to treat migraines which is why I mention them all). With Lyrica specifically, it should be slowly tapered off over a least a week, if not longer. Your doctor will give you the safest schedule to stop the medication on if you ever want to stop taking it.
Avatar f tn oms-gabapentin 300 mg was prescibed to my mom for nerve pain and its a seizure medication? Any explinations she isnt epaleptic?
423251 tn?1308955333 t believe because it happens at any given time and all of the time lately! Also recently I started a new medication, Lyrica, for pain and am wondering if the medication might be making my symptoms worse! I am also on Tegretol due to mild epilepsy and almost a year ago I had a head injury which caused a grand mal seizure and concussion! With the information I've given .. can someone PLEASE help me on this! These tics and the drooling is getting bad and it's scaring the tar out of me!
Avatar m tn Hello, I've had a fairly positive experience with all anti-seizure medications I've tried reducing pain in regards to my Fibromyalgia. I think the reason comes with my belief that there is a malfunction in the central nervous system for some reason. At this time we don't know what the cause is- many new scientists believe it may be neuro-immune. Anyhow, I've responded very well to medications like Neurontin, Lyrica and Topamax.
501792 tn?1261111106 Since I have tried many IC treatments and medications. I have tried Installments, a distention and IC mediactions OTC and prescribed. I have always prefered an all natural approach to medicine but my pain has not responded to those options enough to stop taking the narcotic pain meds. I eat as naturally and organically as possible and follow an IC diet. I have SVT which interferes with alot of the options I've tried like Lupron and being able to consitantly use NSAIDS.
Avatar n tn it is an anti-seizure drug....all drugs have interactions...i do know that lyrica is way more dangerous in the terms of side effects....and some do get euphoric from using it...i dont...i am "trying" it for the last few days and my fingers and toes are tingling and i am in a fog...my doc says i will adjust...i never had this with nuerontin....sleepy stuff till i acclimated to it...but not all of this loopy stuff i have with thelyrica...evryone reacts differently tho...
1168718 tn?1464983535 Somatosensory system pain (neuropathic pain) seems to respond better to GABA drugs. GABA drugs are primarily anti-seizure medications that seem to effect the currents in the voltage dependent calcium channels of the nervous system. Different drugs for different types of pain. There are people on this forum that use both. I take a different anti seizure medication (Tegretol) that works by keeping more of the voltage dependent sodium gates inactivated.
