My doctor told me I have to take the full amount cause it doesn't work right if i only take half the prescribed amount. What should I do take the medication or get a new doctor?
Avatar n tn However, if the other symptoms are new, you may want to schedule another appointment to see if these are a new seizure type. I would also investigate the possibility of getting epilepsy surgery. The outcome from this type of surgery, if you meet all the requirments and the possible deficits don't outweigh the surgery, are excellent. You might be able to become seizure-free. I hope I have helped alttle.
452529 tn?1361851455 I saw a neurologist in 2004 and was put on carbatrol and taken off tegretol...well another seizure occurred. I stopped seeing that Dr. and went to a psych. with a background in neurology. He said my the tegretol was not carrying over until I took my night-time dose. So I was put on XR tegs. and prescribed klonipin for the jerks. Last month I was taken off 100mg of dilantin and I had a seizure on 3/30/08 and I asked to be put back on 400mg of dil, 800mg of teg, and 1500mg of depakote. The Dr.
Avatar m tn ) I know I’ve given you a long list, sorry about that. But of these medications, usually the medications tried the first time around are either lamictal, tegretol, trileptal, keppra, or zonegran. Of these first try medications, keppra, lamictal, trileptal, and tergretol usually have the fewest side effects on a moderate dose, and are often the first drugs of choice amongst docs for focal epilepsy.
Avatar f tn MTS often occurs without know cause and can present as a new epilepsy later in life (although the 20-40s would be more common). Seizure medications such as carbatrol (carbamazapine), trileptal (oxcarbazapine), etc are good choices for this disorder. However, MTS often leads to epilepsy that does not go away with medications alone. If your father has seizures while on good doses of 2-3 medications, then epilepsy surgery may be the best option for him.
Avatar n tn Lindsey ______ ______ Dear Lindsey, The ultimate goal of epilepsy surgery is to render you completely seizure-free and off seizure medications. We routinely continue seizure medications after surgery for a variable period of time, after which the medicine may be weaned. It is important to wean the medication because seizures may recur if the medication is abrubtly stopped. Each patient is different in regard to their tolerance to weaning the seizure medications.
Avatar n tn Triggerd perhaps by age, growth spurt, in addition to past trauma from surgery?? Has been placed on Carbatrol and has taken this for 1 and 1/2 weeks, seizure free. Could this be an early sign of returning tumor? Recent EEG was abnormal, MRI was clear. Will medication be necessary for life at this point? Dear Carld: Sorry to hear about your daughter, but it is good to hear that her histiocytoma is controlled.
Avatar n tn If the brain was cut on and stopped the full blown seizures I experienced, wouldn't the auras I have also be stopped ( or atleast be non productive and not lead into a full blown seizure) since the pathway for the seizure was cut during surgery? Will I have auras if I eventually come off of the medicine? My neurologist seems to think that I can come off of my med. completely. I believe in my mind that I can as well. What do you think? Thank you in advance for responding.
Avatar n tn can't say if I will have another seizure or not. He suggests I stay on medication for at least 1 year seizure free. 3 months down and 9 to go!
644935 tn?1223504344 My daughter seizures are the grand Mal, and she usually requires rectal diastat to come out of her seizure unfortunately. Because of that we keep her bed in our room so we can hear and wake up to her if she were to go into a seizure. It seems that her seizures are usually sleep related. Normally in the morning hours is when she goes into her seizures. She tends to have seizures anywhere from monthly too the point where she can go month without having one.
Avatar n tn I have auras only about twice a year and I am currently taking 300 mg of Carbatrol two times a day. I am going to my neurologist in Jan. for another EEG to reduce my med. again(I only have two more times to reduce it and then I will be off of it). My goal is to come completely off of all medication, of course. I am planning on having children within the next two years and would like to be completely off of all med. before I begin.

Avatar n tn And that type of seizure does not cause a change in consciousness according to this one website. A seizure is a charge of sudden electrical activity in the brain that affects a way a person feels or acts for a short time. This makes sense in light of what I had learned about the neural-misfiring from my EEG. Another clue is the Tachycardia. Tachycardia often precedes a seizure and frequently persists throughout a seizure.
590279 tn?1286339622 I brought this up to my doctor and I tried various types of sinus medications as she was sure it was an infection. These didn’t help and one day I actually felt dizzy and unsteady. We assumed it was a side affect of the meds and I stopped talking them. I had short periods of panic and my heart would race when I didn’t feel right.
