Avatar n tn My 9 month old Shih tzu suddenly died this morning. I am so confused as to what happen, I am hoping to get some kind of information as to what might have happened to him. He was just fine yesterday, acting normal and then this morning after taking him out to do his business, he just started to make this horrible crying sound, and started having what looked like a seizure. Within seconds he went limp and just stopped breathing. Can you tell me what might cause this? Thank you.
Avatar n tn I have a 5 year old Shih Tzu who weighs about 10 pounds. She has muscle spasms that affect all 4 limbs every 2-3 months (sometimes longer apart). When the spasms occur, her extremities stick straight out, she starts shaking, and she breathes heavily. They last for 1-2 minutes, and she's fine afterwards. She's also had a slipped disc twice, and was on pain meds, antiinflammatories, and cage rest when they happened.
Avatar m tn My 2-year-old Shih Tzu has always had skin issues since she's been a baby. I have had to bathe her with a certain shampoo and conditioner her entire life and if I don't, she has serious itch attacks and nobody sleeps. FYI - she is near my side 24/7. The only time she goes outside is when she's with me on her leash and we're taking a walk. She's ridiculously pampered. About 2-3 months ago, she punctured her cornea in her right eye and had to have eye surgery (this could be relevant).
Avatar m tn My 12 year old Shih Tzu was sleeping on the a carpet that he blends in with really well and I was walking past and accidentally stepped on the very edge of his tail. As a reaction, I took a hop to take the weight off my foot but at the same time he snarled and sat up and whipped his head back to look at what was happening and the side of his face and the whole side of my big toe to the ball of my foot connected. I heard an audible "whack!
6810737 tn?1385008368 Hello. My 5-year old shih tzu is experiencing seizures every two days. She had erlichia in 2010 and was cured. This November, she tested low positive. But we were able to cure it already. But she's still having seizures. We have been trying to do everything to cure it. She goes to the vet twice a week to have dextrose with vitamins and potassium put her on her. We put sugar in her water to make sure her glucose level doesn't go down. I wake up at past midnight to feed her.

Avatar m tn Last monday, my nine year old shih tzu, Stitch, had a seizure. First time ever. We took him to the local vet, they did blood work and it only showed that his liver enzymes were higher than normal. Other than that, nothing else showed up. The vet put him on prednisone, a liver pill and an antibiotic, just in case some kind of infection was going on. The first day he didnt eat much, but has steadily eat better and drank.
Avatar n tn Just out of curiosity, a Shih Chon, I am assuming is a mix between a Shih Tzu and a Bichon? Does the breeder have both of the parents? I would call her or him and ask if either of the parents are affected by these spasms, or if either one is epileptic. It might go a long way toward helping to diagnose what is wrong with your dog.
Avatar f tn My 2 months shy of 8 yrs Shih Tzu Madeleine, just had a frontal seizure 2 days ago. This caused her temp to spike to 106 and vets were only able to get it down to 104 for hours. Her bp was 180-190 range, now stable. She has never had a seizure before and hasnt had one since. Her temp seems to have regulated. Cause for seizure is unknown. We are awaiting results on the valley fever. Adrenal US tests are wanting to be done before further brain imaging.
Avatar f tn I have a 10 month old shih-tzu. He started having seizures about 12 weeks ago, the vet immediately put him on phenobarbital. He was on the lowest dosage but it wasn't seeming to work, so they upped the amount he was taking, but then he started to show other strange symptoms.
Avatar n tn I have a Multesse cross Shih Tzu male, 4 years old. He shakes for no apparent reason and a couple times his back legs have been affected and look like they are cramped. They are not stiff or locked and he is not aggressive throughout. It lasts 10-15 minutes as an average and I am concerned. He does have the habit of walking on his back legs to get picked up so I know the back legs are strong.
2186126 tn?1384961026 My heart goes out to everyone here who has had to confront cushings in their beloved pets. My 9 yr old baby girl (shih tzu) was confirmed about a week ago with the disease. I've noticed her heavy panting for about a year now and at that time the vet said (i think) her liver steroid levels were high and she might have cushings. Recently she was going crazy chewing and licking at her paws and limping a bit. Her hair is thinning along her backside and she does seem a little slower.
1916673 tn?1420236870 She shows no signs, she goes potty outside, she drinks, she eats, but the vet is concerned she is high risk for a dental which she needs badly. She is Shih Tzu and has had her teeth done every two years since about the age of 9. I want her to have the dental but with the vet telling me it is risky I am torn. I am trying a holistic treatment for her teeth which is not helping. It works great on my younger dog who has pearly whites.
909073 tn?1242662211 I have a 2 year old male Shih Tzu who has seizures whenever I take him to the Vet, Groomer, Boarding. It makes me scared to take him anywhere. Is there anything that I can do? He never has these episodes at any other time. What if anything can I do?
Avatar f tn Reglan (metoclopromadine) is a very cheap medication, unfortunately, it is also metabolized in the kidneys, so a too high dose results in toxic levels in the blood. My husband and I discovered that completely bypassing the GI tract by using reglan injections worked much better in the end. Chica didn't get the extra pyramidal side effects (extreme restlessness, shaking and trembling) from the reglan injections that she got from the oral meds.
Avatar n tn We recently took our Shih Tzu to the vet and she has been prescribed heart meds for a murmur as well as medication for her siezures. She isn't eating solids, but is drinking on her own, she will drink some broth. She recently had a stomach virus so it seemed she was trowing up as well as getting weak. She has a strong personality and wants to do her usual things but gets tired too quickly.
Avatar n tn Andy is such a great little guy; he really bonded with our other two shih tzu rescues and happily greeted us at the door whenever we'd come home. I've been going through cancer treatment so I've been working from home a LOT. Listening to him cough has been just heart breaking as it seems to get worse. His tongue is pink and up until yesterday, he had a pretty healthy appetite.
Avatar f tn This morning my family owned a 13 year old Puli named Basha and a 5 year old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix named Spanky. Less than an hour ago we had to take Basha in to the vet because of her excessive amount of seizures and weakness due to her 6 year long struggle with epilepsy, arthritis, and several other medical problems. Today she wasn't able to stand on her own and would not stop crying.
Avatar f tn I have a 7 year old shih tzu that is in 4th stage renal failure. She was diagnosed in May and has exceeded expectations of life expectancy. We have been giving her sub fluids daily, blood pressure and thyroid medication, epikiton and aluminum hydroxide in her KD. She's also been given injections for anemia- I can't remember the name. The past couple of months she's been doing well, playful, and more like our sweet Izzy girl. Two weeks ago she had a seizure.
1110049 tn?1409405744 What the EPA Found Most adverse reactions were seen in dogs weighing between 10 and 20 pounds. Reactions in mixed breed dogs were most commonly reported, however, the Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Miniature Poodle, Pomeranian, Dachshund, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier and Bichon Frise seem particularly at risk. Products containing cyphenothrin and permethrin were especially problematic for small breed dogs.
Avatar f tn My 11 year old shih tzu has had mitral valve disease for 3 years which will eventually become CHF according to her cardiologist. She's currently taking about as much medication as my elderly parent including enalapril, vetmedin, spironolactone, hydrocodone (to control the bad coughing that caused her to produce seizure like symptoms and eventually faint several times) and theophylline as a bronchodialator.
Avatar m tn I had to stay with my peke when he was put to sleep, he died in my arms,You can talk to your vet and tell him about your wishes, With regards to Peptobismol, my vet told me not to give it because it contains salicylates, like aspirin, your dog might bleed due to ulcer. I give my shih tzu ,Pepcid, as he vomits at times, you can try what my vet told me to do.I cook noodles with chicken for my dog and he likes it.With furosemide,if the vet prescribed 12.5mg twice a day, then you have to give it.
Avatar f tn My dog died yesterday. She was a 13 year old shih tzu and she just randomly died. She was fine in the morning and just had a stroke (i think) and fell over dead. It was so unexpected and terrible because i was there watching it happen and i was incredibly helpless to help her. I was on the way out the door with her to go to the vet when she collapsed and didnt respond. I'm so grief stricken and I dont know what to do.
544292 tn?1268886268 I got an email this morning from my Mother who says she's coming here in September? I can't even think that far in advance. I'm thinking stuff like, "I have to brush my hair and take a shower." It seems like an insurmountable prospect! I have such respect for anyone who has come off Tramadol and .... I don't know ... maintained a life? Mud mud mud everywhere. Walking thru mud. I just took vitamins and a big cup of Lecithin granules which are supposed to decrease anxiety.
1832268 tn?1326819610 I want to share our experience with our 13 year old Shih-Tzu who was diagnosed with renal failure, two months into it at this date. Her numbers as everyone has experienced were way high at the time of diagnosed, BUN 92 and Creatine was 3.9 (+/-). After her first fluid treatment in the animal hospital the numbers came down but still had issues trying to get her to eat the KD or any of the other kidney diet foods which is why I’m responding to this.
1393112 tn?1294907542 My 11 year old Shih Tzu had been going through about the same thing as everyone is talking about` even peeing after the attack. She would be laying sleeping and start screaming like she was in terrible pain` as soon as it was over her bladder would release.I root caused it to chicken. For the past 6 months she has had 2 attacks and both times chicken was involved.
2361255 tn?1339611918 My Shih-Tzu had a urinary tract infection for which she was put on an antibiotic. Her urine contained blood and her vet diagnosed her with bladder stones and suggested surgery after she completed her course of antibiotics. On a day when my vet was closed (Sunday) my dog had difficulty urinating and was passing just a little blood tinged urine. Not only did she refuse to eat but she would not even walk when I took her outside.
661200 tn?1225486613 So my little guy (Frankie ) 14 year old Shih tzu was diagnosed with chf about a month ago. Started to have a lot of fainting seizures, coughing and seemed bloated. Thought we were going to lose him at one point he was so bad and boy was I devastated . So he was on lasix 12.5 2x and encard 2.5 1x per day.
