Seizure disorders that cause death

Common Questions and Answers about Seizure disorders that cause death

seizure

Avatar n tn Epilepsy requires medical treatment to control symptoms and to prevent death from a fatal seizure. See a neurologist. A clinical examination and EEG are mandatory. Anxiety, post traumatic stress disorders are other possibilities if the clinical examination and investigations are normal. Seek medical help. Do keep us posted. Best wishes!
Avatar n tn Those are certainly two reasons where Epilepsy can cause death. One is being in a bath, unattended, and have a seizure and drown. Two is to aspirate (throw up) and have it get into the lungs. If someone is on hand to help, then 911 can be called, but they have to be know what to do in this situation. Many do not know what to do when a seizure occurs. Some actually strap the person to a board, and if they happen to vomit, there is no way to turn the head to the side at that point.
401370 tn?1233324682 Status epilepticus is a disorder in and of itself and is very serious. People who do not have seizure disorders (there are many kinds, including absence seizures that are nothing like what's described in status ep. With them, a person will appear almost totally normal and most often they are missed by others as well as the person having them because although they've had one, they simply on the outside may have just stopped talking for a moment, or blinked a couple of times.
1392168 tn?1280074408 I have heard of this happening. Although I've never experienced it personally, I've researched it. They are called phantosmia. They can be caused by a simple sinus problem, like you said. Most likely, this is your problem. However, other fairly common causes are brain injury and seizures originating from the temporal lobes. Since you didn't mention any injury, that leaves seizures. However, most people only have this symptoms as a warning to a bigger seizure.
Avatar f tn It lowers the seizure threshold and that may cause seizure but if you happen take a benzodiazepine like the Xanax, I think you currently taking, you are veyr unlikely to have a seizure. Lowering the seizure threshold doesn't mean it causes seizures but people that are likely to get seizure might trigger them more easily on Wellbutrin and therefore it's why it's not suggested to epileptic patients.
1545021 tn?1322477485 it was sleep apnea that actually was the cause of death, but it is related to chiari and we all must be mindful and remember to be checked for it as well. Fatigue is a good indication we may have sleep apnea, but waking gasping for breathe is really the one we fear.... Thanks for reminding us all ....we tend to forget with the newbies they r not aware of many of these things.....
Avatar f tn Since i have been taking this medication, i did not experience a seizure, however i feel that if I miss my dose of medicine even once i will have a seizure. Why? What are the possible future problems that i will have to face with this disorder? Do these seizures indicate a brain tumor or brain cancer? Does keppra play a role in brain tumor/cancer death?
Avatar n tn I doubt the seizure caused him to die, it was the condition that caused a sudden seizure and then death...I know the vet said that my cat did not suffer, and I am hoping that you can take some solace in that. I know it is so hard to lose our friends...I am sorry for your loss and wish you peace.
1045176 tn?1253403447 Yeah... that question really depends on what type of medication you are talking about. The side effect question is something that is not a black and white sort of thing. Side effects can sometimes be minor and sometimes be major... but, if a medication works, sometimes, the benefits of taking a medication can outweigh the cons such as even some terrible-side effects. An example... if someone had Type 1 Diabetes...
Avatar m tn I take my meds and still the seizures continue and no doctor has been able to find a cause. They just tell me that i need to manage my stress levels better. I have before been paralysed from the waste down for 3 months and many times been forced to wrk with a walker bc my left side is not fully opperational.
Avatar n tn Topamax, keppra, lamotrigine can be used as add on drugs with medications mentioned above.Dilantin doesn’t cause depression but can cause decrease in renal function, headache, dizziness, confusion, double vision etc.It is best to discuss your concerns with your doctor before initiation of an alternative antiepileptic drug. Avatar f tn My daughter has been taking medication for bipolar disorder for about a year ( she was taking depakote 500 mg). She was starting have nightmare regarding death, and her medication was changed to seroquel. About 3 to 4 weeks after starting seroquel she had a seizure ( 1 at home and 2 in the hospital). She was taken off the seroquel and but on Lamitcal and has had 5 more seizures. Is her bipolar disorder causing the seizures?
Avatar n tn So after being home 2 weeks my son is involved in a serious car accident and after 2 days of fighting passed away. The day after his death I am informed by the passenger with him that before the accident happened and the cause of the accident is because my son was having a seizure of some sort. He has never experienced a seizure before. My son just passed away yesterday but had been given blood due to his injuries. Blood was drawn before he was given blood however.
Avatar n tn She occasionally has loss of vision in one eye that was previously affected by the shingles. She had an undiagnosed dizziness/rocking problem when she was 8 or 9. She also has a history of bulimia (to what extent I do not know), trouble at school including loss of friends, and her father's death. She was admitted to the hospital 4-5 weeks ago for severe abdominal pain, at which time they believed she had a twisted fat pad (?) but they did not find it upon surgery.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have temporal lobe seizures--partial complex on the left temporal lobe due to tuberous sclerosis on that lobe. In essence, I would be aware of the fact that this type of seizure can go into a generalized state if certain elements occur. Most important is to get at least 8 hours of sleep, don't short yourself on this. Take your medicines at the prescribed time by the neurologist, so they can maintain the proper serum level of protection.
2133558 tn?1368828158 There are a variety of things they can find out, seizure and migraine are two and tumors. They can see sleep disorders if you are sleeping and so forth. They are probably doing a MRI to rule out tumor. I hope the MRI is normal. I had to rule on a brain tumor recently too. Luckily for me it was negative. But your symptoms do sound like a type of seizure.I hope they can get you on the right meds. Do let us know how it comes ok?
Avatar n tn Some seizures can cause damage to the brain, hyperthermia (which can effect all organs of the body), can cause additional trauma, can cause cardiovascular abnormalities (abnormal heart function). If the seizure is due to an insulinoma, for example, the hypoglycemia that the insulinoma causes can be life threatening, if untreated. Since your dog did not lost consciousness or seize, her epilepsy may not cause her any problems.
Avatar f tn ve never heard of anything that would cause a seizure by poking yourself with a q-tip. However, the severe headache sounds like something to worry about. I would talk with a neurologist immediately about his symptoms - he may have had a stroke.
572072 tn?1217126880 m sorry to learn what happened. Your son may be really be having a seizure disorder of unknown etiology. Most seizure disorders have indeed no identifiable cause, and they are just classified according to presentation, and the treatment is tailored according to these classifications as well. Your son may have different kinds of seizures, but a thorough search for a cause should be sought (like EEG, MRI, etc).
Avatar n tn Could also have been an éclamptic seizure, and she may have aspirated and died from it, or remained in a seizure state so long she was asphyxiated. Just hard to say. The hgb you quoted is on the low side, but ok.
Avatar n tn (Currently available) antipsychotics can cause permenant movement disorder such as tardive dyskinesia. However, they must wait a period of time for withdrawl dyskineis to pass. From my knowledge atypical antipsychotics can increase the seizure threshold but this effect is generally not permanent. It would be best to see a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist and have them do full follow up including an EEG (the specific kind to try to set off seizures) and an MRI.
Avatar m tn My 16 yr old daughter was taken to the doctors 12 days ago due to dizzyness, weakness & three strange lumps (1 on her index finger, 1 on back of thigh, 1 near ribcage; lumps do not hurt and do not seem to be "attached" to muscles and cause no pain). Doc said she probably had a virus. 3 days ago she had a seizure like a granmal. 1st one she's ever had. Blood tests were unremarklable however a CT and MRI showed lesions on her frontal lobe.
2030686 tn?1351688548 Interferon may affect the brain, which is why it is not given to individuals who have a seizure disorder that cannot be controlled with anti-epileptic therapy. " So it appears that your doctor wants to be sure your seizures are under good control with anti-epileptic medications before initiating treatment. http://www.hcvadvocate.org/hcsp/articles/HEATHCOTE.
Avatar f tn But could this really be the cause of his seizure and muscle spasms? Also, is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening again?
568343 tn?1217862660 Long-term outcomes show that children of patients with seizure disorders may have lower IQs and higher rates of developmental delay. Syndromes related to several of the AEDs, and to specific abnormalities observed in patients with seizure disorders, are not known to affect rates of chromosomal abnormalities.
1912634 tn?1322181310 I have a wonderful rehab nurse that I see three times a week has noted my coughing that have been so bad I about feel equipment. I ask her about it she just said to go slow and take your time.. She can't say anything about but when I asked the director of rehab Dr Gonzolas he said you need a Pulmonary specialist. They are treating this as COPD because they have no treatment or diagnoses for H2S because they don't survive exposure. I should and am greatful I have cheated death.
