Avatar n tn Two meta-analyses (an analytic study combining the results of several clinical trials) done by Sirven, et al (2004) and Tremont-Lukats, et al (2008) showed no benefit to giving anti-epileptic drugs in general, and Dilantin in particular, to patients with brain tumors in order to prevent an initial seizure. Your husband may have an option not to take Dilantin since there's no difference in outcome. You can check out the articles yourself: www.mayoclinicproceedings.
Avatar m tn My son has his first seizure. After the CT scan, they found a cyst in his brain. The doctor in the emergency room told me that he doesn't need to be medicated unless the seizure comes back. We are waiting for MRI and EEG. I don't have more information on the cyst at this point. He practices martial arts. Would you let me know how serious the cyst will be and the causes? Should he continue practice martial arts? What are the do's and don'ts? He is going through puberty.
Avatar m tn Meaning that if an EEG is done during an attack (such as the convulsion you describe above) and the EEG shows the seizure in the brain waves, then the seizure can be confirmed. In other people, convulsions occur but these are due to stress and not true seizures coming from epileptic activity in the brain, in which case the EEG will not show epileptic activity during the convulsion.
Avatar m tn These may include conditions such as the following abnormalities in the blood vessels of the brain, atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries supplying the brain, bleeding into the brain, such as a subarachnoid hemorrhage , brain tumors, chromosomal abnormalities, congenital diseases or conditions, high blood pressure, pregnancy and problems associated with pregnancy, stroke, transient ischemic attack, which is also called a mini-stroke.
Avatar n tn The disorder can cause discomfort and severe pain in some individuals. Myoclonus may develop in response to infection, head or spinal cord injury, stroke, brain tumors, kidney or liver failure, lipid storage disease, chemical or drug poisoning, or other disorders. Prolonged oxygen deprivation to the brain, called hypoxia, may result in posthypoxic myoclonus. Myoclonus can occur by itself, but most often it is one of several symptoms associated with a wide variety of nervous system disorders.
Avatar n tn For CNS disorders and brain tumors,CT head may be useful in diagnosis. For malignancy in body, blood tests for tumor markers can be done. CVS is an uncommon, unexplained disorder of children and some adults characterized by recurrent, prolonged attacks of sever nausea, vomiting and prostration with no apparent cause. Vomiting occurs at frequent intervals (5-10 times an hour at the peak) for hours to 10 days (1-4 most commonly). CVS has been difficult to diagnose.
Avatar n tn After having a seizure my daughter had an MRI that found an 8mm pineal cyst. She will soon be having an EEG. The doctor has said that he doesn't think the cyst caused the seizure and says he feels it is vagovasal syncope. Is an 8 mm pineal cyst large enough to cause a seizure?
Avatar m tn An MRI with contrast looking for MS would find a brain tumor. That is how mine was found. If no tumors were found 2 years ago, it is highly unlikely that you have one. Have you seen a neurologist? If you are experiencing seizures, you should see a neurologist as soon as possible. The symptoms you describe may be related to seizures.
Avatar f tn These can be due to the location of the mass itself or the mass being a seizure focus. Also, treatment of tumors/cysts usually includes steroids, which can also cause changes in personality. I recommend that you discuss your symptoms with your physician. They may or may not be related. It might be worthwhile to have an EEG (looking at the electrical waves of your brain) to ensure you are not having seizures.
Avatar f tn I am trying to find out as much as I can but no one here knows alot. she has 4 noduals on her brain and she has the ash leafs on her back and legs. Will she get worse with the skin lesions? I read you can develope autism is that at anytime of life? She has had 2 seizures the second one was last week. That was when she got diagnosed. They put her on cepro anti-seizure medicine does this help or prevent? I am a scared parent trying to find out all the info. I can. thank you.
Avatar f tn tumors of the brain, developmental anomalies of the brain, and vascular anomalies of the head, disorders of the eyes and the inner ear, stroke, trauma patients, disease in the pituitary gland, certain chronic disorders of the nervous system. (http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=headmr&bhcp=1) Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn An MRI or CT of his head might be in order to check for things like tumors, but keep in mind that brain tumors can cause just about any symptom. If his doctors won't believe him, try to get a video of him while he's having an episode to show them. If the mood swings are independent of the episodes, they might be an entirely separate issue (ultra rapid cycling bipolar can cause mood changes over the course of the day).
Avatar m tn no other tests have been ran just an EEG everything looked fine but my adviser (case manager) at the traumatic brain injury place i have gone to several times told me that a person can come back with a normal scan and it doesn't mean the EEG is correct. the EEG was done 2 years ago when symptoms weren't bad as well. my adviser also told me that my symptoms do not match with the TBI i had. TBI symptoms improve over the years not worsen.
327385 tn?1378360731 i wish you would add a pituitary /brain tumors form. cant find anything that deals with pituitary problems or brain tumors.the members that have these problems dont have any place to go. theres a thyroid form but now one wants to deal with pituitary issues. have problems finding info on pituitary and hormones.there are some members on here with pituitary problems but they are scatterd.would like to have a form to share with other members that have pituitary issues.
Avatar f tn Contrary to what is stated above, this is NOT brain surgery. They access your pineal region from beneath the brain, so they do not affect your brain at all. It sounds like a scary procedure but is actually straightforward for a good brain neurosurgeon. The surgeon essentially inserts a microscopic endoscope that magnifies the area by 50x and uses a navigation system to get him there. It is minimally invasive.
Avatar m tn One of the characteristic differentiating feature of an epileptic seizure is that there is an abnormal discharge of electricity from the brain during the seizure whereas there is no such electrical discharge during a pseudoseizure. An electroencephalogram (EEG) can be done to rule out epilepsy in persons experiencing pseudoseizures. Another differentiating feature is the release of a hormone known as prolactin, which is present in the blood after the true epileptic seizures .
Avatar n tn ) is persistent and non-fluctuating, things to consider include genetic sensitivity to smell, chronic sinusitis, dental infections, brain tumors, or even depression of other psychogenic disorders. Upon occasion, nasal polyps (small growths in the nose) may cause an altered sense of smell. Additionally, there are some viral etiologies such as viral hepatitis that have been documented as rare causes of both "dysosmia" (when innocuous odors smell foul) and nausea.
Avatar f tn A decrease in the blood supply through arteries to the brain stem, cerebellum, and back of the brain can cause vertigo. This decrease is called vertebrobasilar insufficiency because the arteries affected include the vertebral and basilar arteries. If the decreased blood supply causes temporary symptoms, a transient ischemic attack (TIA) is diagnosed. If permanent damage results, a stroke is diagnosed.
Avatar m tn First off, despite more people being diagnosed with primary brain tumors, they are still relatively uncommon. A good percentage of people develop brain tumors while fighting another form of cancer such as lung or colon cancer. Also know that a good number of people diagnosed with brain tumors do not present with headaches. I think you should see an ENT because it could be something as simple as an inner ear infection which can cause dizziness and ringing in the ears.
