Avatar f tn The combination of clonazepam and unisom can cause central nervous system and respiratory-depressant effects which may be increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Discuss your symptoms with your consulting doctor he may change the dose or the medications. I would strongly caution you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while sleepy as you might injure yourself or others. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar n tn (Antianxiety) The main uses for Ativan are anxiety, irritability in psychiatric or organic disorders, preoperatively, insomnia, and as an adjunct in endoscopic procedures. It's "unlabeled" uses are antiemetic prior to chemotherapy, status epilepticus, rectal use, alcohol withdrawal and seizure prophylaxis. Nowhere in any medical reference does it state Ativan is used for the treatment of depression.
Avatar n tn Are the blood blisters in the arms and legs of some elderly a vitamin or mineral deficiency? If so, what will help? This discussion is related to blood blisters.
Avatar m tn Benzodiazepines also require special precaution if used by individuals that may be pregnant, alcohol- or drug-dependent, or may have comorbid psychiatric disorders. Clonazepam is generally not recommended for use in elderly people for insomnia due to its high potency relative to other benzodiazepines.
Avatar f tn There is no simple, definitive test for a seizure disorder. Often, seizure disorders are diagnosed based on patient history and observation of a seizure. If your daughter had a seizure lasting 30 min., that would qualify for a diagnosis in the minds of many clinicians. I'm sure you'll follow up with the diagnosing doctors and others as necessary. I hope the seizure turns out to be a one-time event.
Avatar f tn Tramadol does indeed lower the seizure threshold. Withdrawal from tramadol can provoke seizures in people who do not have a seizure disorder, as is also the case with many anti-convulsants used off-label in pain management but FDA-approved for seizure control. My docs won't even consider tramadol or certain tricyclics for me since I have a history of seizures. However, in your case the benefit of pain relief might outweigh risk of seizure.
Avatar n tn Although results are comparable among older and younger patients, old age is generally considered a significant risk factor for early mortality and morbidity, partly because of the high incidence of coexisting disorders in elderly patients. However, in many elderly patients, survival and quality of life can be improved with valve replacement or repair. The overall perioperative mortality rate for aortic valve replacement in elderly patients is 10.
Avatar m tn Meaning that if an EEG is done during an attack (such as the convulsion you describe above) and the EEG shows the seizure in the brain waves, then the seizure can be confirmed. In other people, convulsions occur but these are due to stress and not true seizures coming from epileptic activity in the brain, in which case the EEG will not show epileptic activity during the convulsion.
Avatar f tn HI, An epileptic cannot have both a complex partial seizure disorder and a generalized seizure disroder. People with a generalized seizure disorder are usually born with it, while people with partial or complex partial get it sometime during thier life. Generlaized seizures occurr over the entire brain, while complex partial only occurr in a section of the brain. I have complex partial seizures that occurr in my right temporal lobe. They started from a head injury I got when I was three.
1221035 tn?1301000508 Does anyone know what DMD's, if any, that can be taken safely by people with seizure disorders?
Avatar m tn Behavior such as this is not unusual in much older dogs because this type of behavior usually coincides with sight and/or hearing deficits that are common to elderly dogs. But a three year old dog should not have these problems and in a young dog this can be indicative of seizure activity. People tend to think that a seizure means the dog is convulsing or thrashing on the floor but there are different types of seizures.
Avatar n tn This drug is mainly used in the treatmen for seizure disorders, trigeminal neuralgia (pain). Dosage is 100-200 mg once or twice daily until unless changed ny a competent physician.
Avatar n tn (Currently available) antipsychotics can cause permenant movement disorder such as tardive dyskinesia. However, they must wait a period of time for withdrawl dyskineis to pass. From my knowledge atypical antipsychotics can increase the seizure threshold but this effect is generally not permanent. It would be best to see a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist and have them do full follow up including an EEG (the specific kind to try to set off seizures) and an MRI.
Avatar n tn It was awful so I do understand how brain chemical disorders and electrical disorders can make you appear healthy but in reality you are as ill as anyone else with a problem. just believe in yourself and ignore the jerks and realize most people understand.
Avatar n tn I would definitely take her to the vet, although not necessarily to have her put down. I would let the vet examine her to see what he/she thinks the problem could be and take it from there. Seizure disorders can be managed medically, it's not necessarily the end of the line just because she had a seizure. I would, however, definitely get the vet involved.

401370 tn?1233324682 d have to be suffering from severe, repeated, constant seizures, and with no medical attention. Some people who have seizure disorders often stop breathing during a seizure but it's such a short period of time. In severe cases, say an E.R. and someone's seizing badly, oxygen would be applied. You do not have brain damage.
Avatar f tn ve been through caring for an elderly, ill relative, so I know how that goes. It can raise stress levels to the point of no return. I'd suggest asking for adrenal testing. Start with cortisol (24 hr test is best), which is a stress hormone.
Avatar m tn SDH is subdural hematoma is also commonly seen in the elderly and in alcoholics, who have evidence of cerebral atrophy. It is also more common in patients on anticoagulants, especially aspirin and warfarin. Patients on these medications can have a subdural hematoma with a minor injury and it is abnormal localized collection of blood in which the blood is usually clotted or partially clotted.. The treatment of a hematoma depends on its location and size.
Avatar n tn Benzo's are very addictive...it doesnt matter, Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, etc... I tried to cold turkey Valium once, and I almost died !!! - After that I tappered slowly off them. I have read much about benzo's and it only takes 1 month for the body to become dependant for it. Your MOTHER MUST BE VERY CAREFULL, do not let her try to cold turkey off any benzo...she can have a seizure, coma or die...very dangerous.

Avatar m tn Conversion disorders are disorders in which the patient suffers from symptoms of diseases that he does not actually have. The symptoms of a pseudoseizure are almost same as those of an epileptic seizure, but their origin is psychological, not neurological. One of the characteristic differentiating feature of an epileptic seizure is that there is an abnormal discharge of electricity from the brain during the seizure whereas there is no such electrical discharge during a pseudoseizure.
