Avatar n tn An aura is a sensation or a feeling that a patient reports prior to a seizure. They can be visual, auditory, smells, nausea, changes in sensation, de ja vu, or any perceived feeling a patient has before a seizure. Typically auras only last for 5-10 seconds before a seizure. However in patients taking medications they could last longer. Based on the fact that you are having a aura indicates that you have focal seizures (means they are coming from one area), as opposed to generalized.
Avatar n tn I had my first grand mal seizure a few months ago. A couple of days ago, I had a a second grand mal seizure. The first lasted around 4-5 minutes and the second lasted for around 2-3 minutes. I had an EEG, CT Scan, blood work, and a holter monitor for the heart, and all of my results came back normal. My neurological exam was also normal. I had the aforementioned tests 1-2 days after my first grand mal episode. I had several aura episodes, and I had many panic/anxiety attacks.
Avatar n tn This intermittent severe pain interferes with common daily activities like sleep and eating. This could be a complex partial seizure often preceded by an aura. Impaired consciousness, oral automatisms like involuntary chewing or lip smacking, head or eye deviation usually in a contralateral direction to the seizure focus. An EEG would be required for investigating. Panic disorders could also be part of the symptoms.
220917 tn?1309788081 No one has ever seen me have a seizure. I take Topamax, which is an anti-seizure medication, for my migraines, daily. I know I skipped a dose this week. I've done that a kajillion times. I usually go to bed VERY early. 9:00 -10-30 range, because of my fatigue, and I usually nap briefly during the day. I did take my nap, but last night, I was just sick of being sick, and stayed up WAY too late. 1:00. I really was overly tired.
Avatar m tn I have had 8 grand mal seizures in the past 3 yrs. No aura, etc. I was on Lamictal and Zoloft for pst 9 months and gained 24 lbs, extremely tired, etc. Doctor has recently changed me to Keppra (500mg) and Zoloft (100mg). Not sure this is the right combo for me. Any suggetions? I seem to have mad mood swings, sleepy all the time. Would Wellbutrin help? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP!
Avatar m tn First, some history - about 8 years ago my husband had a tension-pneumo thorax and had a chest tube placed. Several hours later he woke from sleep complaining of extreme nausea and being "hot" then suffered a syncopal episode along with what appeared to be a "seizure." Upon further evaluation the neuro determined it was a vasovagal reaction to the chest tube.
Avatar f tn I've been a long-time sufferer of migraine with aura, and for a long time the aura was fairly consistent - visual disturbances and nausea mostly, and a headache. Last year, I moved out to a remote town with a different climate, with my partner after finishing uni. It was a stressful time because I didn't know anyone, didn't have an income (except through my partner), and was applying for a lot of graduate jobs without knowing whether I'd ever actually find one.
Avatar f tn Hi, Your symptoms suggest of a Grand mal seizure. Please wait for EEG and consult a neurologist for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment. A grand mal seizure is often followed by a period of confusion and delirium for a few days. You doctor is right in saying that you must not drive because you may have such seizures again. You should not drive unless you are free from seizures for a period of 6 months after taking treatment. Please take proper treatment. Hope this helps you.
Avatar n tn Clinically I have been diagnosed with focal point seizures from the right hemisphere of the brain and a lot of the same things have happened to me in the aura part of it, but during the seizure I cannot respond at all. I have had them turn into grand mal as well. Some of the unexplained events though might be soon explained. They are now checking for Myasthenia Gravis and possibly coming up ALS. I am scared a little, so I know what the scary feeling of not knowing is like.
Avatar m tn It IS very scary to watch a beloved pet go through a seizure, particularly a grand mal seizure. At least with you and your husband both being nurses you kind of know what to expect and how to deal with it, so you are a bit ahead of the game there. When or if your Archie has another seizure, talk to him throughout the whole event in a reassuring voice. He WILL hear you even though it may seem like he doesn't.
Avatar m tn On the other hand complex partial seizure is preceded by an aura which is usually a feeling of déjà vu, euphoria, fear and depersonalization. Other symptoms of aura include tunnel vision (which can be seen in migraine), and change in size of objects followed by loss of consciousness, memory and automatism like lip smacking, chewing and swallowing. MRI may detect focal brain lesions and EEG is diagnostic. Treatment is mainly by anticonvulsants like Valproate and Phenytoin.
Avatar n tn Although it had lots of side effects, the worst being a lot of weight gain and having to sleep for about 12 hours a day. I don't really get typical aura. Its more like a temporal lobe seizure - in description (although Epilepsy has been discounted) with 'derealization' being my most constant symptom. Further more - since January I have been on a gluten, wheat and dairy free diet. Just this weekend I am now completely off my medication, healthy and happy - after 12 year of living in hell.
Avatar n tn My son is 15. He had his first seizure when he was 6. He was diagnosed with complex partial seizure disorder. I had taken him to a psychiatrist when he was 3 because of his severe temper tantrums. She told me it was because he was delayed in his speech and had a hearing loss. When Ryan had is last EEG in Nov 2002, it was normal. The first normal EEG since he was 6. We started tapering off Tegretol. After a couple of months with less Tegretol, the mood swings and violent behavior started.
Avatar m tn The pet senses that something is coming and the owner can predict a seizure is coming. 2. Ictal (seizure) stage-this is the true seizure and often lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes followed by a period of disorientation and sometimes the loss of site. 3. Post-ictal-this is the recovery period after the seizure. This period may not be noticed or could be very prominent lasting from a short period of time to a lengthy time span depending on the pet.
486038 tn?1300066967 I've only had 2 seizures so far that have been seen by my mom, but today was the third. My seizure this time was short, and I got that weird feeling, like something really bad was about to happen, and then I feel disconnected and just weird all over, and then I realized I couldn't swallow my food, and then told mom how strange I felt and FINALLY got that bite of soup swallowed after trying maybe thirty times. I sat on the couch for about 2 mintues feeling awful, and then, it was over.
Avatar n tn I would get an aura (blurred vision-almost like a film comes over my eye-it lasts just a few seconds but continue to come and go) we tried all of the abortive meds-Imitrex pills, sprays, injections, Maxalt, Zomig, etc. None of them worked for me. We have also tried beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, etc. I was given Zonagran (an anti-seizure med) to see if it helped control the migraines. After 1 dose I went into anti-phalatic shock and needed to be air flighted to the hospital.

Avatar n tn Usually, although it is not known if it occurs universally, the migraine is an aura to the epileptic seizure. This is usually a temporal lobe seizure. Most think that the migraine in and of itself does not make the brain more sensitive to seizures. But as I said, there are people in whom both co-exist and thus there is a chance that migraine can predispose one to a migraine. The answer is "sort-of" and maybe. I hope that helps and doesn't confuse the issue.

Avatar n tn Finally, last Friday, my new primary-care doctor (an Internal Medicine specialist) got the results of an EEG, which she said showed some kind of seizure activity in the left temporal lobe. She called in a prescription for Valproic Acid. I have taken six doses so far (250 mg each). This medicine makes me miserable with heartburn, no matter if I take it with food or not, and I have not seen any relief from the original problem. In fact, it may actually be a little worse.

Avatar n tn During the two years from beginning to perform the surgery, the patient had seizure aura, but not seizure! Then, according to the hospital stipulation, he began to reduce the dose and seizure. 5) In 2002, the patient began to perform the Nowlis Knife surgery to treat in Zibo Wanjie hospitals. The patient performed the Nowlis Knife surgery. And at the same time, he also takes the epilepsy medicine which the hospital compound.
Avatar f tn These headaches are called pre-ictal because they occur before the seizure activity starts. They are one type of aura, the symptoms that warn of a coming seizure. These headaches are generally brief. They can be throbbing, steady, or sharp. Pre-ictal headaches are said to affect about 20% of people who have seizures that are difficult to control, but they may be under-reported because the seizure may interfere with memory of the headache.
Avatar n tn abdominal pain, the “aura” as it is common in certain types of epilepsy, nausea, bloating, and diarrhea with nervous system manifestations such as headache, dullness, confusion, and partial or complete loss of consciousness with interruption of awareness of oneself and ones surroundings, in combination with epileptiform seizure activity seen on EEG tracing. Once the diagnosis of abdominal epilepsy is confirmed, treatment can commence as with other forms of epilepsy.

Avatar n tn These were preceeded by an aura. The seizures have continued to develope into a monthly patterened seizure disorder that follow a precise schedule. At one point, they would be preceeded by a week of disorientation, memory loss and a general sense of unwell. Then immediately followed by a week of abscense seizures with as many as 10 per day. After that week, I would feel great and able to do most things I normally do for two weeks. Then the whole routine would start over again.
Avatar m tn I'm a 24 yo male. 6' 2", 170 lbs. In 'good health'. On random (no pattern) I will experience a wave of dizziness and racing heart that makes me feel unsteady but this is more of the "aura" before I experience an "episode". History of migraines(pain), scoliosis, osteoarthritis in cervical spine, and epilepsy. Episode Symptoms: Fast onset, lasting time 40s-2min. Sense of time is altered, hard to concentrate or focus/answer simple questions.
