Common Questions and Answers about Seizure after stroke

seizure

Avatar n tn I wanted to know if a person has a seizure then a ischemic stroke- carotid artery in the neck, can they still administer the shot to reverse the effect of the stroke. or would that be fatal?
207091 tn?1337713093 Just got back from the vet. She thinks Mama is passing out, not a seizure or stroke. She heard a heart murmur (which is new), and thinks she has high blood pressure, maybe kidney and thyroid issues. She's slightly dehydrated, which could mean something with her kidneys, as she gets lots of water and canned food. She also noticed that her retinas are degenerating, and that her pupils aren't dilating nearly as much as they should (also new).
401370 tn?1233328282 While loss of short-term memory after a seizure is normal, it should not be lasting, especially after just one. You should be evaluated to make sure nothing else is happening and that you're not experiencing "absence seizures" or something like that. Although stupid and not at all helpful, the guards most likely did not harm you with their "revival tactics". The only harm they may have done, was by not getting assistance/treatment during/after the seizure.
Avatar n tn after a stroke, people can start to have seizures.
Avatar m tn So I'm just not sure if she had a mini-stroke or another seizure. So that's my question - Did she have a mini-stroke or a seizure (today)? Any relevant info is greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn Seizures could be the result of the stroke. My seizures started after stroke and are controlled with medication. Whether the stroke is the cause of your mothers seizures will have to be determined by her doctors. I'm sure with your mothers other health condition and the meds she is on, the dr.s are looking to determine whether the seizures are related to the stroke, her meds or other health conditions. I wish you good luck.
Avatar n tn My neurolgist diagnosed me with a stroke-related seizure (since the symptoms were coming from the same area of the brain as where I had my stroke) and gave me Depakote which stopped the symptoms almost immediately. I didn't tolerate the Depakote (many side effects) and eventually switched to Neurontin which I have happily taken for 6 months, three times a day. I have no side effects and the Neurontin keeps the symptoms completely in check unless I accidently skip doses.
Avatar n tn She has experienced 2 episodes described as possible seizure by her doctor, although they couldn't confirm seizure. The first was 6 months post stroke, the other (yesterday) at 11 months. Both occurred while working (part-time). Work involves standing at a demonstration and sales booth for long periods (a biz she has owned for 20 years).
Avatar n tn In order to prove it, everytime he had this new seizure, I brought into the ER and they would check his Tegretol levels. Finally after the 7th trip to the ER an ER doctor told us that each time his levels were just fine mostly they were 7 to 10. So we finally had proof that it wasn't an overdose or over release of medication in his symptoms. However, these new seizures began coming every 3 to 4 days.
Avatar n tn So to those who have been following the birth and scary moments with my little Adam Dale, after more testing today we found out that he had a stroke during or shortly after delivery. They are not sure why but the long term prognosis is pretty good. Still scary as heck but at least we have answers. He seems to be doing really well and has not had any more seizures since early this morning.

Avatar n tn oh the poor little tyke....yes indeed she could well have suffered a stroke or seizure or both. I would take her into a Vet asap... I don't know what she was on for meds? it could be a side effect of some meds... can also be due to losing so much of her body weight so quickly causing whats called Hepatic Lipidosis http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2011/12/13/feline-hepatic-lipidosis.aspx ♥ Please don't just call a Vet, if she were my cat I'd rush her to a clinic....
Avatar f tn My boyfriend of 3 years suffered a stroke late November 07 after surviving cancer, he was 29. The doctors said the damage in my boyfriend's brain is permanent, the stroke was not severe enough to handicap him but it has affected his memory and mental capacity. They are unsure if he'll ever recover his memory fully. He is recovering slowly but still has trouble remembering people including me.
Avatar f tn However please watch out for any future similar attacks, because seizures are also known to occur very commonly after stroke. An ambulatory EEG may then be considered.
Avatar f tn I was severely depressed after my stroke and increasing my anti-depressant completely took away the depression. It might help him. And maybe not, but it might be worth a try. Wish you the best with your very difficult situation.
5466288 tn?1410488785 I was taken by ambulance to the ER.Every test done to check blood sugar, the heart, and for possible stroke, turned out normal. So I was diagnosed with vertigo, given a prescription for Antivert and rehydrated by IV since I was a little dehydrated.I forgot to mention that my blood pressure was VERY HIGH,although just two weeks prior it was very good.My question is could I have had some sort of seizure while sleeping, that left me with the vertigo and HBP? FYI,I have grand mal epilepsy.
Avatar n tn What causes someone to have a weak leg after having an epileptic seizure (grand mal) for the first time?
Avatar n tn Dilantin is not the worst medication on the planet, but it does reduce mental acuity. Siezures after a stroke are terrifying, but you have to think about the cause of the siezure. This is hard to do, even for an experienced neurologist. Contact someone experienced with epilepsy.
Avatar m tn I have a friend who had a random seizure one morning after she had been vomiting and had diarrhea all night before. She also had not been sleeping well or at all some nights the whole month before. I took her to the emergency room and she had blood work done and a CT scan done both came back just fine. The doctor told her it was probably that she was dehydrated, and had lack of sleep that put too much stress on her brain. He also told her to consult a family doctor.
Avatar n tn I had a stroke when I was 29...2 weeks after I gave birth to my first child. I had a bilateral carotid dissection. I am now 33 and am thinking about having another child, but none of my doctors know for sure why I had a stroke in the first place. Both my ob and neurologist think that I should be fine, but they really have never seen this before. I keep looking for other opinions....and suggestions? Anyone out there that had a baby after a stroke?
Avatar n tn My dad is 76 and had a massive stroke to the left side of his brain, after the stroke he was in the hospital for 5 days and sent to acute rehab. He was there for 4 days and developed severe aspiration pnemonia and was put in ICU for 3 or 4 days and then in a regular room for about another 8 days, then Humana woud not approve him for acute rehab and sent him to a su acute rehab/nursing home where he was for 6 days.
Avatar n tn He had a blood sugar of 73 when the paramedics tested him, but they feel that had risen due to the seizure activity. They felt that his blood sugar had been much lower. He was put on seizure watch for 1 week to make sure it was not a different condition. He hasn't had one since. It is a very scary experience. He does not remember the seizure at all.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure if seizure disorder and epilepsy are the same these days? I'm a 43 year old female, no history of seizures, 2 year survivor of breast cancer, which made the discovery of benign cysts in my left temporal lobe. 6 months ago I started having severe headaches with almost stroke like symptoms with neurological deficits associated with them as well as an elevation in my stress levels. All my doctors tell me I have more stress in my life than they've seen in a while.
Avatar n tn my 19 year old granddaughter was airlifted to a trauma center from her college with all the classic symptoms of a stroke (drooping face/eye, left arm weakness, left leg weakness, could not move her tongue to the left, could not inflate her cheeks on the left side pain in the right side of her head) after admission to the local ER her symptoms started to subside and after arriving at the new trauma center the symptoms continued to subside.
