176741 tn?1295237589 What type of food do you feed your dogs? We currently feed her Purina One, but I'm wondering if there is something more nutritionally sound that I should be giving her? Something somewhat economical, as well, would be great! Thanks.
685623 tn?1283485207 As I was reviewing questions at our other forum, I came across one from a user who wanted to know why most veterinarians carry Science Diet or Royal Canin or some other premium food when there are so many websites stating that these foods are bad. As I answered his concerns, I thought “this will be a great blog post…but it will be controversial!!” I do ask that you read all the way to the end before you make an assumption that I am in favor of any one product.
685623 tn?1283485207 The “best” dog food in the world won’t help a dog who doesn’t accept it and there are many dogs eating a variety of foods who are healthy, sound and will remain so on their respective diets. One thing that many people forget about as they strive to bash one food over another is that many of the “big” pet food companies were instrumental in helping us understand how important pet food nutrition is to the health of our furry friends. One has only to read the story of Dr.
Avatar f tn So yours might just be one of those who need extra nutrients, or perhaps some ingredients in the diet are making him sick. Purina has a lot of by-products and grains, corn, rice, and stuff kitties don't really benefit from, as obligate carnivores that they are. So I'd go with either Wellness, Nature' Variety, EVO, Wysong’s Au Jus Canned Meat, Merrick, Country Pet, Avoderm Select Cuts, or even Wysong’s Archetyp. These are all high quality, grain free diets. And yes, grain can cause loose stools.
Avatar f tn Our vet in Ohio (we were at Wright-Patterson AFB from 11/91 - 4/96) recommended Science Diet. All 3 kitties picked out the SD nuggets and ate only the Purina (we tried mixing the 2 to gradually introduce the "healthier" alternative). Every cat I've owned has lived 16 years or better, save one who succumbed to anaphylactic shock at the Science Diet vet's clinic at 6 1/2. All "Name Brand" foods are formulated to meet the basic needs of a cat in good health.
1118884 tn?1338596450 This is a huge change. From being able to snack on Purina One.... plus having breakfast and supper FF or Wellness...and the occasional Temptation (I know I know...bad mom!)....to a few kibbles in what used to be his wet food bowl. He was extremely confused...searching around kitchen for food...hopping on chair to see if I'd put his breakfast on table... My questions...does anyone know about this kibble? Could I wet it so he is getting enough fluid?

874521 tn?1424120397 One of my fur babies also has urinary crystals and he was given science diet SD and CD from the vet. We did a little research and realized how horrible science diet is for cats even though the vet will tell you how great it is. We switched him to wellness and he has had no problems at all. He gets 1/2 pouch of wet food in the morning and and another half at night and then he has a bowl of dry food out all day. They key is trying to keep them as hydrated as possible...it helps!
Avatar f tn I just so wanted to try to not get stuck on a very expensive dog food like we did w/ our Pomeranian who was on Science Diet all her life and died at the age of 13 from cancer. I've not adjusted that last feeding to bedtime yet, but I have made it much later than it was. She was eating at 8am, 12 noon & 5 PM. Since the Vet visit on Fri, she's ate at 8am, 1:30 PM & 7PM. So far there hasn't been much change. This morning she hasn't had any of her breakfast.
1943833 tn?1349280189 I had a lengthy conversation with the vet this morning. His feelings are that it's definitely not Addison's (based on some of the lab work I misinterpreted.) He is also fairly confident it isn't diabetes. He says urine glucose is much different then blood glucose, and that glucose in urine is a kidney disease symptom as well as diabetes, but if I'd like to, we can rule diabetes out with a simple test next week. I think we will, just for my peace of mind.
1916673 tn?1420236870 But, there are so many different anti-nausea medicines, which makes it very confusing to know which one is the best in treating this symptom. In most cases, a vet will advise, and a good vet will take the circumstances and any other symptoms into consideration, before choosing the right thing to prescribe. I wonder if User Group members had a particular favorite anti-nausea medication, that had worked well with their own dog?

233616 tn?1312790796 In my case, the moment I found out about fat adding, and too much roughage harming Riba absorption I altered my diet, and went UND within 2 weeks of doing so, but prior to that I had not been able to get a good log drop, and had in fact had my VL rise again at week 16. Ergo diet really does effect outcome, much more than medicine is letting on.
Avatar m tn We are getting ready to change his diet to one with antioxidents in it and omega3 fish oil to see if we can clear out(Hope, Hope) and get his tear ducts operating again (this is being done under Dr. Tucci's supervision). his STT is 7 left eye & 3 right eye. It seems his right eye works some times & sometimes not. Dr. Tucci is going to a seminar in the beginning of September and hopes there is some new information out there.
Avatar f tn She is in fourth stage renal failure-Of course she has seen her regular vet for fluids-ultra sound revealed she has one kidney which is failing. Creatine was 13-subs at home-now using hollistic and homepatic treatment. Recently more bad days than good. I am giving her ice chips which seem to work better for her than lapping. Pedialyte ice is also better.
Avatar m tn My dog (shepherd/husky mix, 73 pounds, 12 years old) began to have grand mal seizures last week. He had two seizures, one on Sunday and one on Monday, at almost exactly the same time in the evening. After the second seizure, the vet put him on phenobarbital (97 mg/2x per day). He's been on it for five days now and is still pretty out of it. He is extremely lethargic (sleeps most of the day), has coordination problems, and weakness in his hind end. He walks veeery slowly.
