I take Advair, (Fluticasone propionate / Salmeterol) once a daily inhaled. My asthma is not controlled without Advair, but is stable with one dose daily. I would like to take Harmine alkaloids (Harmine, Harmaline), but I'm not sure if Salmeterol is safe to take with Harmine alkaloids as they are MAOI (reversible MAOI however) are they safe to combine? Thank you!
Advair™ Diskus® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Powder contains 2 medicines. The inhaled steroid Flovent® (fluticasone propionate) has a half life of around 5 hours, so it would be totally out of your system in a few days. The inhaled long-acting bronchodilator Serevent® (salmeterol) has a similar half life, so it would be totally out of your system after 5 days.
When steroid side effects occur, they may linger for weeks or even months after the medicine has been stopped.
The Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Aerosol may raise your saturation, to a degree that will make oxygen use unnecessary. Your current dose of Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Aerosol is low and, at this level, highly unlikely to be associated with any clinically significant side effects.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive disease that will slowly worsen.
While it is possible that the Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) could have had something to do with your developing shingles, it is very unlikely. The risk of death you mention is a very, very small risk. Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) is generally well tolerated by most people with asthma but more than a few side effects have been reported, especially with the dose that contains the highest amount of fluticasone.
However, it has been suggested by some studies that inhaled steroids, particularly when used in high doses such as with Advair™ Diskus® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Powder 500/50, may cause steroid side effects and, at most, contribute in an additive way to post-menopausal and other types of osteoporosis.
However using a long-term control medicine, like Advair, Diskus (fluticasone/salmeterol), should help clear it away quicker.

Been diagnosed with non allergic rhinitis, feline dander, housedust etc allergies. Also diagnosed with excercise induced asthma in the 90's. About a month ago wheezing. Doctor has me on 50mcg fluticasone/salmeterol powder am and pm,plus albuterol every 4 hrs. I haven't been using rescue every 4 hrs. When I talk I start coughing and choking and have to spit. What is going on with treatment?
To my knowledge Advair® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) has not been linked to strokes. Have you heard anything about this in the lay press?

Symbicort contains budesonide and formoterol fumarate dihydrate and Advair contains fluticasone and salmeterol. So while they do not have the same medications, the medication groups are the same. Last year I was hospitalized with Stevens Johnsons Syndrome(SJS), which left me with chronic dry eye and chronic bronchitis although I did not experience any obvious respiratory symptoms. Prior to that I was absolutely healthy and played sports and worked out fairly regularly. After a few months recovering from this, when I started strenuous exercises i.e. running, sprinting, I felt my chest tightening up.

I noticed that there is a small patch on my left chin, where beard is scanty. It is not completely gone but the hair is scanty and the patch is obvious. I went to my dermatologist and he told me it is Alopecia Areata, though it could be in "initial stages" and it is "too hard to say anything". He told me to apply fluticasone cream twice a day, for a month. And if the hair doesn't grow back, he will give me steroid injections. Should I get those injections?
As fluticasone propionate causes irritation of the nasal mucus membranes. Other adverse events that occurr with fluticasone propionate (with uncertain relationship to treatment) include: blood in nasal mucus, runny nose, flu-like symptoms, aches and pains, and dizziness.

It has been reported that high dose ICS is associated with the development of pulmonary TB in persons with COPD* For this reason, it has been recommended that every patient with COPD should undergo chest radiography, sputum acid-fast smear, and mycobacterial culture before receiving, as well as regularly during, HD ICS therapy. It is suspected, but not proven that this risk would also occur in persons, with a history of TB, who do not have COPD.
Salmeterol is an LABA medication which is usually, but not always, combined with an inhaled steroid. Advair contains both salmeterol and a steroid.

Asmanex® Twisthaler® 220 mcg (mometasone furoate inhalation powder) is an effective inhaled steroid. Using it with the Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Aerosol is the equivalent of at least doubling your inhaled steroid, so as to better maintain the state of reduced inflammation, accomplished with the Medrol® (methylprednisolone).
