recently diagnosed with COPD/emphysema. hospitalized three times: finally determined that i'm allergic to sulfate based albuterol, combivent, all of the usual "suspects." i'm now on advair (one week= 115 ) and doing okay - except the only rescue inhaler i can tolerate is primotene mist. just took an oximeter test - came out 86-87. i think it's too soon to go on oxygen, until we see if advair works. but i worry about the advair too.
5 mcg/actuation, and Wixela (fluticasone propionate salmeterol inhalation powder) for my COPD. Is there a sequence I should be taking these meds in? Is there a time frame I should use between the two meds?
Spiriva® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) is one and Serevent® Inhalation Aerosol (salmeterol xinafoate) another. Each is a bronchodilator and capable of giving good relief of shortness of breath.
I am using combivent(4x a day ) and serevent diskus 50mcg 2x for my
moderate severe copd, I have just started
Flovent 50mcg inhaler. Is this OK or should I
cutdown on the combivent ?
then Medicare stopped paying for it, they gave me this for some odd reason I wont take it..i am copd..I been using rescue inhaler and nebulizer.. both these been on most my life..
are these meds close to the same?? I've got it right here..
The only warning I know about is against long acting broncho dilaters used by asthmatics (still fine for COPD patients) without an inhaled steroids. There are several reasons for that warning. The main one is that too many people use them as rescue inhalers when they don't work quickly enough for that purpose.

My mother was diagnosed with COPD after many tests to find out the reasons for her chronic shortness of breath. No other reasons or explanations were given until she was diagnosed with emphysema a few years later. It was like a catch all term for any questionable lung disorder.
My worry is that I seem to be developing the same problems as my mother. I have been diagnosed with asthma and allergies and am taking medications for these .

How would you interpret the results? What do you think the cause of my COPD is? Long term prognosis? Cause of low DLCO and drop in it from test 1 to test 1? I am currently on tiotropium bromide and salmeterol/fluticasone propionate. My reason for posting this is one doc is pessimistic and the other highly optimistic.

I have asthma since I'm 4 years old. Curiously enough only in Portugal. Now I'm 40 years old. In Autumn and Winter it increases and in Spring and Summer it tends to slow down or disappear for a while.
Recently I had to go to the Hospital because the VENTILAN aerosol was not producing any effect.
In April of 2008 I was supposedly diagnosed with COPD..I say supposedly, because the pulmonologist is a friend of my sisters and she wants me to quit smoking.He has not put me on any medication and sometimes I wonder if he did not tell me that to scare me in to stopping.I have smoked heavily 2-3 packs a day, for 17 years.I have systemic lupus eurythmatoses.I recently have developed some concerning symptoms.I have a horrible,dry,hacking cough and I cough of a lot of clear phlegm and/or liquid.
For the last two years my lung health was declining seriously and I honestly did not think I would make it through the coming winter. I assumed that the COPD was progressing at an alarming rate. I developed unrelenting bronchitis and would have coughing fits as a regular thing and, most recently, choking. I weaned myself off Advair, having tried everything else. I am now years younger. Bronchitis is minimal and the coghing fits and coking are a thing of the past.
I take Advair, (Fluticasone propionate / Salmeterol) once a daily inhaled. My asthma is not controlled without Advair, but is stable with one dose daily. I would like to take Harmine alkaloids (Harmine, Harmaline), but I'm not sure if Salmeterol is safe to take with Harmine alkaloids as they are MAOI (reversible MAOI however) are they safe to combine? Is your inhaler a steroid inhaler? If so, you may be developing adrenal fatigue. Steroid inhalers should not be used for mild COPD. Actually I don't think they should be used at all. They almost killed me - literally. To ease your lung condition you might want to try taking 500 mg of vitamin B5 daily, a moderate amount of vitamin C, and mullein extract. These are all natural anti-inflammatories and B5 is, in addition, a mucus thinner. You could add N-acetyl-cisteine to those.
Advair™ Diskus® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Powder contains 2 medicines. The inhaled steroid Flovent® (fluticasone propionate) has a half life of around 5 hours, so it would be totally out of your system in a few days. The inhaled long-acting bronchodilator Serevent® (salmeterol) has a similar half life, so it would be totally out of your system after 5 days.
When steroid side effects occur, they may linger for weeks or even months after the medicine has been stopped.
While it is known that high doses, much higher than Advair™ Diskus® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Powder 500/50, of long-acting bronchodilator medicines, such as the Serevent® (salmeterol) in Advair™ Diskus® (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Powder, can cause abnormal heart rhythms, this is rare.
It is also possible that some of the symptoms you describe, such as headache, shakes, racing heart, were caused by the other ingredient in Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) called Serevent® (salmeterol).
Many of the symptoms you describe occur with panic attacks and are relieved by leading a healthy life style. If that alone doesn't control the panic attacks, there is good, effective medicine for treatment of panic and you should request it from your doctor.
At your age, the most likely cause of your shortness of breath, excessive mucus and wheezing would be asthma and not chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD, while remotely possible should you smoke cigarettes and have an inherited form of emphysema, called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, is a highly unlikely diagnosis. There are, however, other chronic lung conditions that can occur in someone your age and some of these, including cystic fibrosis (CF), can even mimic asthma.
However using a long-term control medicine, like Advair, Diskus (fluticasone/salmeterol), should help clear it away quicker.
Sometimes this test is repeated after he has used a rescue inhaler like albuterol. When there is a 20% increase the test is positive for asthma. Advair� Diskus� (fluticasone/salmeterol) and albuterol as needed are recommended for the treatment for asthma.

Been diagnosed with non allergic rhinitis, feline dander, housedust etc allergies. Also diagnosed with excercise induced asthma in the 90's. About a month ago wheezing. Doctor has me on 50mcg fluticasone/salmeterol powder am and pm,plus albuterol every 4 hrs. I haven't been using rescue every 4 hrs. When I talk I start coughing and choking and have to spit. What is going on with treatment?
You and he/she will have to resort to other preparations, to include a different inhaled steroid, such as Flovent® HFA Inhalation Aerosol (fluticasone propionate), either alone or in combination with a long-acting bronchodilator, like Serevent® Inhalation Aerosol (salmeterol xinafoate) or Foradil® Aerolizer™ (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder), such a combination being either Advair® HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) Inhalation Aerosol or Symbicort® (budesonide/formoterol fumarat
Advair is a combination of the same corticosteroid in Flovent (fluticasone) and a bronchodilator called salmeterol. Bronchodilators relax the muscles around the airways to relieve asthma symptoms like wheezing and coughing. So, Flovent is the steroid fluticasone. Advair is a combination salmeterol/fluticasone.

There are reliever inhalers which work for up to 12 hours after taking each dose. They include salmeterol (brand name Serevent) and formoterol (brand name Atimos). Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. Regards.
