Avatar m tn Now according to revised guidelines by the american heart association for prevention of infective endocarditis, the antibiotic prophylaxis is not routinely recommended for all dental procedures. For patients with underlying cardiac conditions, prophylaxis is reasonable for all dental procedures that involve manipulation of gingival tissue or the periapical region of teeth or perforation of the oral mucosa. So, if the procedure involves the above manipulations, you may need prophylaxis.
Avatar f tn recommendationId=257 For infective endocarditis prophylaxis, current guidelines support premedication for only a relatively small subset of patients: history of prosthetic heart valve or past valve repair with prosthetic materials; prior infective endocarditis; unrepaired cyanotic congenital heart disease, including palliative shunts and conduits; repaired congenital heart defect with residual shunts or valvular regurgitation at the site of or adjacent to the site of a prosthetic patch or a pro
Avatar m tn Wife of 15+ years and I each have occasional oral lesions and never genial, engaged in mutual oral then next day I noticed an oral lesion. 1. Risk of her developing genital rsv 1 lesions? 2. She started acyclovir 800 mg 5 X daily about 20 after exposure, is this likely to help her avoid infection?
503418 tn?1231098736 Since 1955, the AHA has made recommendations for prevention of infective endocarditis with antimicrobial prophylaxis before specific dental, gastrointestinal (GI), and genitourinary (GU) procedures in patients at risk for its development. However, many authorities and societies, as well as the conclusions of published studies, have questioned the efficacy of antimicrobial prophylaxis in most situations.
Avatar n tn Handsfield reported in 2008 that there was not. What about in 2010? I had a doctor prescribe a maintenance dose of acyclovir three years ago to my now ex-boyfriend (yes, we were also using condoms, but he and I were both concerned that condoms alone would not protect him). A partner of mine once became infected despite careful condom use, so I am very conscious of the need for better protection. Thanks so much for any information you have!
Avatar f tn per the latest American Heart Association guidelines, antibiotic prophylaxis for endocarditis (a severe infection of the heart) is no longer recommended for MR, nor is it recommended for gastrointestinal procedures.
Avatar n tn The issue of antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures for people with valvular heart disease is controversial. Your dentist is correct in that indiscriminate use of antibiotics can cause side effects and can induce resistance in common infectious organisms. On the other hand, endocarditis can be a serious disease that should be prevented if at all possible.

Avatar m tn I am concerned about my risk since I do not know this person. Also would you recommend post exposure prophylaxis for an exposure such as this? I am married and extremely concerned about the potential of contracting HIV and spreading it to my wife. Thanks again for your advice.

Avatar n tn In one study, 50 women with thrombophilia (including 20 factor V Leiden heterozygotes) and recurrent pregnancy loss were treated with enoxaparin throughout 61 subsequent pregnancies. The live birth rate was 75% with enoxaparin prophylaxis, compared to 20% in prior untreated pregnancies [Brenner et al 2000].
238668 tn?1232732330 - The recommendations in this article reflect analyses of relevant literature regarding procedure-related endocarditis, in vitro susceptibility data of pathogens causing endocarditis, results of prophylactic studies in animal models of endocarditis, and retrospective analyses of human endocarditis cases in terms of antibiotic prophylaxis usage patterns and apparent prophylaxis failures.
Avatar f tn The Joint WHO/ILO guidelines on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV infection recommends HIV testing at baseline, immediately after completing PEP (i.e. 4 to 6 weeks post exposure) and again ‘3 – 6 months post exposure’.

Avatar n tn In April 2007, the American Heart Association significantly scaled back their endocarditis prophylaxis recommendations, as it was felt that the risk was not nearly as high as initially thought for the majority of heart defects as well as for the majority of types of procedures. Aortic valve insufficiency ceased to be a higher risk defect after the new guidelines, unless you have had endocarditis before.
Avatar f tn A teacher that I work with has a baby in the hospital with RSV. She emailed that if you baby has a cough with no fever, please take them to get checked for RSV. My DD is 6 months old and has had a chronic cough for a long time. It seems to get better and then starts all over again. I have taken to the doctor for it three times, the last time a week ago today. Everytime they check her really good and say it is just drainage from a cold. She has not had any fever and feels good.

The following winter he spent 10 days in the hospital with RSV. This year he spent the first week in PICU and the next two week on Eccmo. He died on his 6th birthday. We never even heard of RSV IG.
