Common Questions and Answers about Rsv in high risk infants

rsv

Avatar n tn It usually manifest itself as a cold in adults and older children, but can cause serious problems in infants. RSV can cause lower respitory infections, breathing problems, pneumonia or even death. According to statistics, over 125,000 infants are hospitalized annually with Respiratory Syncytial Virus, resulting in more than 500 deaths. RSV can be contracted by placing your hand in your mouth after you have come in contact with an infected person or surface.
Avatar f tn My 11 week has rsv .. He was full term .. Has any other mother had this in a infant ..
Avatar m tn Dear Rjthkids, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that can cause severe pulmonary infections in infants. The effects of this, especially in the still developing lungs after birth, can take a long time from which to recover. However, you have a special circumstance that complicates things: you live at significant altitude. The relative lack of oxygen at that altitude can lead to elevated blood pressure across the lungs, which is called pulmonary hypertension.
Avatar f tn CMV is the most important cause of congenital viral infection in the US. For infants who are infected by their mothers before birth, two potential pictures exist: Generalized infection may occur in the infant, and symptoms may range from moderate enlargement of the liver and spleen (with jaundice) to fatal illness. With supportive treatment, most infants with CMV disease survive.
Avatar n tn Infants catch colds all the time because their immune systems are very week. She cold catch allergins from the air outside if the window is open.
2189208 tn?1339572701 Rsv is a really bad cold it does nothing,to adults but is in,some cases fatal to infants!
Avatar n tn Younger children, especially those under 2 or 3 years old, are most at risk for more severe symptoms, such as high fever, wheezing, difficulty breathing, a persistent cough, or apnea. I hope this helps.
Avatar n tn For instance juvenile diabetes is thought to be triggered by a virus - the child was already set up to be vulnerable to developing it, they catch a viral illness and a few weeks later their pancreas starts to stop working and they develop signs of diabetes. Same goes with rsv, a very common respiratory virus that in infants and the elderly ( or immunosuppressed ) can cause them to be very ill.
478429 tn?1265244387 But so many people and pregnant woman are dying here without it. Here, only those at high risk are getting them until later on in November when more vaccinations are produced, then it's whoever wants it.
Avatar f tn 1) scales related to interactive abilities, and 2) scales related to organizational responses to environmental stimuli. Infants who perform poorly on the BNBAS are considered high risk, especially if performance is poor in more than one of the behavioral dimensions. •Inability to respond to caregiver. These cocaine exposed infants are largely unable to respond to the human voice and face and are unable to interact with others. •An increased risk of malformations of the genito-urinary tract.
Avatar f tn I took my 4 week old to the ER and they told me he has RSV. They just gave me a paper on it, They didn't really tell me what to do except suction out his nose. I read the paper ad it told me that in mild disease that no specific treatment is necessary. So I guess he is only a mild case, but I don't know how to tell if he is getting worse. I read on another site that family history of asthma puts him at a higher risk for becoming a severe case. I am know wen he is getting worse?
Avatar n tn I am not a doctor but I have not heard of afib described that way and atrial contractions are not a danger where afib could be due to possible blood clots. Does your daughter have an unusually high heart rate keeping in mind children's heart rates tend to be more elevated than adults. An average heart rate for a baby in their first year can be anywhere between 100-160 from what I have read. Anyways, I agree with the previous poster.
Avatar m tn However, reported vaccination failures imply in utero transmission especially in high-risk groups (highly viremic and/or HBeAg-positive mothers)[12,13]. Furthermore, the risk is related to the presence of HBV DNA in the placenta[14] and to maternal viremia[15], which supports an association between maternal HBV load during pregnancy and the risk of transmission to the baby. Despite successful screening and vaccination programs, high maternal HBV DNA is correlated with perinatal transmission.
Avatar m tn My 4 month old son has been diagnosed with high myopia (-20 in one eye and -22 in the other). We have seen two specialists and they recommend different methods of treatment. Specialist A recommends fully correcting his vision with contacts; however, specialist B recommends under-correcting him by approximately 30%. Specialist B believes if we fully correct his vision now it will only get worse over time; however, if we under-correct there may be some improvement.
Avatar n tn My bottle of honey doesn't say its pasteurized or raw, it says nothing.
Avatar n tn If IgG is that high (no idea how high it has to be), maybe you are having CMV reactivation (though I´m not sure).
593530 tn?1263847957 I brought Brody to his pediatrician last week because he was very congested. After a nose swab was tested it was determined that he has RSV. Since it's a virus it can't be treated with antibiotics, so she instructed me to get a cool mist humidifier and keep his nasal pasages clear by using saline solution. The only symptom he's had is the congestion. There's no fever, coughing, mucous coming out, etc.
Avatar n tn My son is going to be 2 months old soon and a couple of days after he was born they told me he has RSV, i have been in and out of the hospital so many times and he dose not seem to be getting any better. I have read everybody stories and How they lost their loved ones and i am so scared that it might happen to my son. Please is there anything that i can do to prevent this from getting worse???

1271018 tn?1296536826 I am currently considering getting the Whooping cough vacination since the state I live in (California) is seeing a rise in this disease and it is especially deadly to infants. Have any of your DR's recommended this to anyone?
1368291 tn?1299629804 Saturday he was having lots of nasal congestion and coughing so I took him to the ER. He tested positive for RSV so the last few days have been scary. We are doing a cool mist humidifier with eucalyptus oil at night, albuterol breathing treatments and keeping his nose suctioned out. I hope he gets better soon but I did learn that apparently you cant trust family to let you know...
Avatar m tn it proves nicely that even high doses of RSV are unlikely to have any effect on HCV replication in vivo in man. How so? On page 187 Fig 2 you will see the effect of increasing micromols of RSV on fold replication of the HCV construct, readout by the luciferase assay. On page 188 similarlily in fig 4 the effect on the subgenomic replicon cells. RSV in micromols/Liter vs fold replication enhancement. Good work, we assume.
Avatar f tn Signs of toxicity and symptoms of withdrawal have been reported in infants following high doses or chronic maternal use close to term. Diphenhydramine has been evaluated for the treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum. It is generally not considered the antihistamine of choice for treating allergic rhinitis or nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Breast-Feeding Considerations Infants may be more sensitive to the effects of antihistamines.
Avatar n tn But regarding the exposure that I had last year (lip-lip kiss with drink transfer with a high risk girl) I just wonder how different it is and is it just my mature immune system that keeps me safe here?
