Common Questions and Answers about Ritalin dosage information

ritalin

Avatar n tn My daughter just started taking 10mg of adderall xr and it doesn't seem to be working as well as the generic ritalin was. Does it take awhile for it to have it's full effect? This is only her third day on the medication. Any thoughts?
Avatar n tn The drug I’m referring to is specifically Ritalin not Ritalin SR (sustained release). Ritalin is made in 5, 10 or 20 mg tablets. This question involve the dosage Ritalin is prescribed. I’ve read that the average dosage for adults is 30 mg/day. I’m a 25 year old male. I weigh 220 lbs. and am 5’11”. The only other medication I’m on is 100 mg of Zoloft/day for the treatment of depression. I have no prior medical issues.
Avatar f tn I have shown proof from reliable sources, to my Doc that he needs to give me MORE than 60mg Ritalin for it to be effective as 60mg Adderrall. He still will NOT increase the Ritalin dosage. I took the script anyway, and after filling it realized I am screwed for the month. I hardly can tell that I am taking an ADD medication when I take this weak Ritalin. I even took 80mg and felt nothing. I hate to do it, but I am going to call my Psych.
Avatar m tn I saw my psychiatrist today and he told me Ritalin must be taken cautiously with patients with tics because it aggravates tics. I am 27 years old and have been taking Ritalin since I was about 13. I used to have a blinking eye tic but Ritalin didnt seem to aggravate it. However I got a funny spasm in my left eye and the doc said its fine. The one question I forgot to ask him was if Ritalin could cause my eye tic to spiral out of control in the future.
Avatar f tn I am a 74 year old Female and I am taking 20mg of Ritalin SR in the AM and 25mg of Imipram for the cataplexy in the PM. I get about 2 to 4 hrs sleep and the rest of the night I toss and turn. My Dr. told me she doesn't give meds for her patients to sleep. I am concerned about not sleeping and then taking Ritalin to keep me awake during the day.I feel my health will be affected. Is this the normal way to treat my condition?

Avatar f tn has anyone had their child prescribed ritalin for this and has it been affective in helping their child, my child masturbates does this help with it too
Avatar f tn My six year old son started taking a pretty low dose of Ritalin - he's doing great, except he seems to become "whiney" for lack of a better term.. he is much more emotional and prone to tears. Does this sound normal? He's been on the medication for about 5 weeks.
Avatar n tn He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5 although we knew it by the time he was 3. He takes Ritalin... 25 mg in the am... 20 mg @ noon and 10 mg after school. The Ritalin has worked VERY WELL at controlling impulsivity and bad behavior. So much so, that his teacher this year asked me why he was on Ritalin. However, it has made him very slow at completing assignments and many other things. He is very bright and makes very good grades.
939031 tn?1289956654 Thanks for the input on Ritalin. My company's insurance plan wanted me to switch to it from Provigil (probably due to cost) but I was afraid to because I had heard some bad things about it, but I like what you both have said. I have to be careful of too much stimulation due to heart symptoms - palpitations etc. Actually, I can no longer take Provigil which worked wonders for me. How small a dose of Ritalin have you found is effective?
636964 tn?1222990085 My husband recently decided that he had ADD so he went to his doctor and got prescribed Ritalin. Ever since he's been on it, he's been a zombie and emotionless. We barely make love anymore and he's also very sensative about things. Now I've heard that sometimes if you really don't have ADD, the medication will affect you different then for someone who really has it. I've discussed this problem several times with my husband but nothing has changed.
Avatar f tn Today I did not take the Ritalin and felt no spasms. On the other hand, my doc told me to take the Ritalin constantly. I tried to take it only when I needed to concentrate at work and not on days I don´t have to work. He told me it is not good to interrupt intake like that. I am very interested in knowing your experience with Adderal and Wellbutrin. Did your doctor check your clinical history to be sure that there is no high risk of seizures?
Avatar m tn I abused Ritalin snorting about 50 to 60 20mg pills over a 12 hour period, then the next day i was given a random urine test by my pain management doctor which is sent out to a lab. Ive heard that methylphenidate/ritalin wont be detected by most urine test but ive also heard that it will show up as methamphetamines, so i dont know what to believe.
Avatar f tn ve begged him to get professional help but he insists that if he admits to his doctor that he is depressed, he will no longer be able to get the ritalin which is the only thing helping him do well in school. He cannot tolerate the idea of antidepressants. He is going to his doctor next week to get a new prescription for more ritalin. I want to secretly contact his doctor and give her this information, but I know he will hate me if he finds out that I went behind his back. What should I do??
Avatar f tn Are these episodes happening in a similar time frame? For example, do they tend to happen as the dose is wearing off and right before another dose, or do they tend to happen when the ritalin is at its strongest (about an hour after taking the medication)? There's something called a "rebound effect" where the child goes from having too much ritalin in his system to too little ritalin, and the behavior bounces around accordingly.
Avatar m tn My son is currently on 7.5mg of Ritalin. He is very whiney and obsesses over things like what he is going to do next, or where he is going next . Starts crying about things that happened days ago. Worries about it for no reason. Is this normal ?
4509053 tn?1355665640 5mg) for mood regulation, but it was causing wetting his pants during the day. Now that he is on a reduced dosage, his outbursts, tantrums, impulsivity, and tics (right now, picking his nose) are worse, and his wetting hasn't improved all that much. Are there any alternatives that could address the same issues, equally well, without the wetting side-effect?
Avatar m tn I did a quick check on the use of Ritalin on depressed patients. This is a quote from their package insert: "Ritalin should be given cautiously to emotionally unstable patients, such as those with a history of drug dependence or alcoholism, because such patients may increase dosage on their own initiative. Chronically abusive use can lead to marked tolerance and psychic dependence with varying degrees of abnormal behavior.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about stopping this medication and trying a low dosage of Ritalin. On the other hand, five is a very young age to have a diagnosis of ADHD. Most doctors are reluctant to give a diagnosis of ADHD until past the age of seven and only at the age of seven and eight do they prescribe medicine for ADHD. Children mature alot between five and seven. If he has issues with language and communicating, you need to have him evaluated by a speech pathologist.
Avatar n tn Ritalin is a stimulant and if he is abusing it, that can cause so many problems. Not sure why he was put on it either with a history of drug use and now drinking too. Bad bad combo, with ritalin and alcohol. What did he say when you told him you can't be with him if he keeps drinking and abusing the ritalin? I am sorry your going through this right now, but it sounds like you need to take care of yourself first. Does he show any signs of wanting to quit?
Avatar f tn Thanks for your responses. I am not saying that ADHD doesnt exist, I know it does and some children need this addressing specifically, but I work in an education field and I firmly believe that there is a lot of over-diagnosis, unnecessary drugging and children that are labelled wrongly. it IS happening. Just this week we had one child who was removed from his parents because of physical abuse, placed with a maternal aunt who neglected him and then placed with foster parents ..
429700 tn?1308007823 It sounds strange but the Ritalin seems to actually make me more tired. They increased my dosage but it is still not doing anything for me. I don't know if anyone has had similar results. Take care.
Avatar n tn I am 33 years old and am prescribed ritalin 20mg 4 times a day. I have been on it for 4 years (smaller dosage in the beginning). I usually end up snorting from 5 to 9 a day and running out of meds before the month is up. I have tried tapering off, quitting but I dont have the willpower. The scariest thing is the withdrawl (withdrawal) symptoms are almost unbearable physical and mental. I am afraid to tell my shrink cause I dont want to get shut off.
1092368 tn?1257774902 I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and I have A.D.D... The Ritalin (LA 30mg) is supposed to help me learn, or sit still at least, why do I get an ubandance of energy from it??
