Reverse sneeze in pugs

Common Questions and Answers about Reverse sneeze in pugs

sneeze

Avatar n tn ve noticed a couple times that my pug would suddenly begin grasping for air in the middle of his sleep. The struggle for air wakes him up and he begins to make snorting sounds for about 10 seconds before he is able to breathe regularly again. Is this a common problem with pugs or should I get him checked for respitory problems? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Of course he did not cough the entire time we were at the emergency vet office. I am just waiting for the radiology report to come in. I had to put my other pug (Nicky) to sleep almost two weeks ago and they think the cough can be a stress cough. He is taking Clavamox and the cough seems to be getting better. He really is not eating as much as he used to and doesn't play at all really. He just sits by my side.
Avatar n tn Good morning...it sounds like your little cocker has a great life with you! Ask you veterinarian if this could possibly be a "reverse sneeze". The signs you describe don't fit the description of a reverse sneeze perfectly, but it is possible that is what he is doing. Some owners describe the reverse sneeze as a "goose honking" kind of cough. Glad to hear that he is living a good life with you.
Avatar f tn Hello & welcome.... Google: "Reverse Sneeze" & see if that's what your dealing with.....It's very common in Toy Breed & harmless.....Just shocking to watch!
Avatar n tn Ok, reminds me of a funny story. I had Shelties for years. My friend had an older Sheltie that had the reverse sneezing problem. This is NOT a recommendation but my friend used to call the dog to the bathroom and put a little Vick's on the dog's nose. It got to the point that every time the dog would start the reverse sneeze she would walk over to the bathroom and wait fir my friend put Vick's on her nose. Just cracked me up.
Avatar m tn and both my dogs seems to have a hard time caughting there breath, this is on occasion. i was told by the pet store that this is an reverse sneeze. is this true.
Avatar f tn I am so sorry I couldn't locate the video on google drive. It just didn't work, and came up with a 'page not found.' I am wondering....could this be what is known as a 'reverse sneeze'? I think there are short videos on you tube of examples of reverse sneezes in dogs. Some dogs do it differently to others, but you might get the general idea. If it IS that, it is harmless and very common.
Avatar f tn I should mention that her teeth are past needing cleaning but we have not done it because of her other problems and fear she would not wake up. I also should mention that she does not sneeze in front of the vet so he has never seen this behavior. Gia now is not eating regularly for weeks and I don't know what to do. Help!

Avatar f tn It sounds like it might be what is called a 'reverse sneeze'. They are not uncommon and generally harmless. It's hard to explain - the dog acts like it is trying to suck in air loudly and its chest will heave. It happens usually in a cluster and then will end. A shelter worker years ago told me that sometimes helping the dog to stand with its front legs wider than usual can help.
Avatar m tn Our 11 year old pug started out with a cough with a small gag after. We went away for 1 week. On the day before our return he got really bloated the caretakers didn't think he got into anything. He can't lie down and we walked him as we thought he might of gotten into his dry good. Pugs don't know when to stop eating. So we thought he ate to much. Friday night Saturday. He did sleep Saturday when we got home. Sunday morning still bloated.
404138 tn?1308941656 First, you need a firm diagnosis that it is allergies causing the reaction. I'm wondering if what you're seeing is a "reverse sneeze" rather than sneezing and wheezing? If the emphasis of air movement is more inward than outward, that's a "reverse sneeze" and it can be very frightening to witness but is basically harmless. Think of it as kind of a hiccup. If you rub the dog's throat and get him moving again, it will usually stop in a few seconds.
978488 tn?1295468883 nothing seems to help my pugs breath! it smells like rotting fish! i have tryed to use the little finger tooth brush but it is very hard to get in there. what else can i do to help this problem???
871111 tn?1248992972 Last year, my pug spontaneous begin inverted/reverse sneezing. I was told to not worry about it. Shortly after, maybe a month or so, she developed a runny nose with discharge. It's mostly always clear. She was taken to the vet and given antihistamines, which didn't really do much. Then a litter after the runny nose appeared, she started coughing. It was a dry, non-productive cough, almost like a "cack" sound. She was given doxycycline (100 mg) tablets, for kennel cough.
Avatar f tn after she recovered she started pulling her neck up and gagging which after some research I thought it was a reverse sneeze or a collapsed treacia the vet gave her a low dosage steroid she has been on this for about a week and there is no change .. the neck pulling and this gagging continues when she finally gets comfortable she starts to yelp .. we are at a loss for what is going on ..
Avatar f tn Karla gave you excellent information. Probably to get a Vet exam.Sounds very much like Reverse sneeze, which is very common in small breeds. However, that is just a guess Hope all is well.
Avatar f tn if it is i may be a reverse sneeze... dogs get this and it is normal, unless it reaches a point where it is constant and distressing... but if it is random and intermitent it should be ok... just monitar for other signs of health problems... more difficulty breathing distress, changes in activity level or severity of episodes.. as well as food and water intake.. but when in doubt see a vet hope this helps.
1397479 tn?1280469188 Hello & welcome......If your dog is a Toy breed, the snorting sound (When excited) is called a "Reverse Sneeze". Google it and read to see if that's what your hearing....Very common and nothing to worry about......Actually, I don't believe anyone knows what causes it! The choking from lease pulling is too much pressure on the Trachea....It causes restriction of air in the lungs......
Avatar f tn Welcome to the forum.......Is this a Toy breed? If so, what your probably dealing with is called a "Reverse Sneeze"......It's very common & harmless......Try Googling and see is the symptoms fit what your describing........One of mine has done it for 8 years...Let me know what you think.......
Avatar f tn You need to record an episode of the gag/cough to show your Vet......It may be simple like a reverse sneeze, but in a dog this young, you need to make sure it's not a heart defect! Depending where you purchased this dog, I would be suspicious.....Tracheal collapse comes on with age.....Normally, not this young.... Itchy can be anything from fleas to improper diet to environment to shampoos.....It takes a process of elimination to rule them out......
