Avatar n tn Almost without exception patients in nursing homes and rehab centers are dehydrated. There are complex reasons for this, but dehydration can make a tremendous difference in the patient's ability to respond to rehab therapy. Dehydration can create confusion and attention deficit, among other things. Very few institutions pay adequate attention to hydration. Just because the patient refuses a drink does not mean they don't need hydration.
306455 tn?1288865671 She had taken someone elses identity, they found out who she was and is now awaiting trial. We are paying for her attorneys i am sure. The thing that bothers me is we turn our backs to our own people and they live on the streets in cardboard boxes. We also had a vietnam vet who had just finished a stint in rehab in So. Mn. came out with no job and no place to stay. They found him dead behind the power plant in Mankato.

The componants include rails of various lengths, options for floor stabilization mounts and extensible brackets for the walls. Avatar n tn VJA, Thanks for sharing your experience. I understand the rehab centers will provide a more intense rehab. And you would be right, my Uncle is not ready for that yet, however, the rehab center I am considering is an 80 bed acut rehab with varying tiers of care, so I am assuming they will start working with him at his ability, but may challenge him more and have additonal resources to pull from. It is a freestanding rehab hospital.
Avatar n tn The fault with using thse for elderly patients is the small button is difficult to press. These are ideal for a stroke patient to summon help or assistance. Since you have two signals, if they can understand one can be used for emergencies (come right away!) and the other signal used for a routine call. She him lots of magazines with pictures and consider getting a large print newspaper and large print books. Even though his eyesight may not be affected these are easier to read.
Avatar n tn caregiver222 Thank you for answering my question We are doing this feeding for a week and see if her strength wil improve she suffered a mca right brain stroke 6 days ago a very servere one today we had to transport her to a rehab center so for 5 days she had nothing to eat so we went forth with the tube last night today before the transport she was more responsive than in the past days and managed to take a sip of pinapple juice which i thinks is great i am hoping that tonight she makes it thro
82861 tn?1333457511 Mom was discharged today, but will have to go back to the hospital shortly for major back surgery. The neurosurgeon says she has the worst MRI he's seen in his career. No kidding! My brother and I are more worried about the anemia issue. Although the neurosurgeon says he can "fix" her back in spite of the anemia, we believe the worst problem is anemia. All benign causes have been ruled out, and an oncologist is looking in the direction of some flavor of leukemia.
Avatar n tn Dead brain cells do not regain their functions but other paths can be trained to do some of the cognitive powers. You might check into the rehab centers in your area and have her evaluated for what progress they think she might be able to do. My daughter is on Doxil at the present time, it does take at the minimum of 4 infusions to see if it works. Be sure to read up on the Doxil site about the side affects and make sure your Mother is protected from them.
Avatar n tn Most of the stuff printed about rehab is nonsense. And the bureaucracy of the rehab centers conflicts with the needs of the patient. It requires a lot of time and love and common sense, but don't give up. For starters a daily hydration log is a necessity. If the aide cannot tell you to the ounce how much the patient has taken in at any time of day, fire them. Hydration, hydration, hydration. I am against the use of coumadin entirely, and threw away her coumadin.
Avatar n tn hospitals can be lethal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 99,000 people die every year from hospital-acquired infections. And not just the sick, the elderly, or the very young. Case in point: 27-year-old Joshua Nahum was injured during a skydiving accident. Considering he voluntarily jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, Nahum was probably considered very lucky to have escaped the incident with only fractures to his skull and femur.
369425 tn?1207968315 I hope you can do it I am not sure I can but I am trying and I guess in some way it helps to know others are out there for support. I have been in rehab twice before for this evil vicodin all Dr. prescribed for severe pain after surgery and dental work. But this time I am determined to go it alone, I hope. Good Luck to you.
Avatar n tn Went to rehab today. Got my daily dose of meds. This rehab is very hard for me to handle. I dont feel as though I fit it. i know that we all have addiction in common but its not the same. We talked about triggers today and they gave us a list of things to look out for. Everyone in there could relate to these triggers but me. The only thing that triggered me to take the vicodin was the pain. So heres the question of the day. How do I stay away from that?
Avatar n tn See if you can get a gerneral practictioner to perscribe quienine(again my spelling is terrible) it is what is used for malaria, they also use it in elderly people for leg cramps they get at night. IT REALLY WORKS. it can cause your ears to ring so make sure you keep in touch with your doctor. For the sleep issue a possible choice is Trazadone, it is an antidepressent, when taken in low doses it will knock you out for 6 to 8 hours with no hangover the next day.
Avatar f tn Teko, right now, everything is in an uproar because of the economy. It will get worse when all the insurance companies shut down, more unemployed. I have read through a lot of the Bill. What they are proposing is very scary. They will have a Commissioner, that will have more authority than we could imagine. His Report starts at the Date of the Act, not when Year 1 comes.

242516 tn?1368227505 You may benefit from Tamiflu or Relenza pills. What your doctor will do is test you for flu and if you have an untypeable flu (one that we doesn't match those we've seen before) it could be swine flu. I've been following the CDC on twitter at and at which CDC has promised to update at 3pm EST daily.
Avatar n tn Yes, if you ever can get to a point where you don't need such strong pain relief, you're going to have to go through a clean, honest, intelligent rehab process. But so what? You didn't ask for this to happen to you. You're no criminal. You're just a human being in unspeakable pain. It is a doctor's obligation to relieve that pain just as it is his obligation to help his patient off of the drugs currently necessary for achieving that pain relief.
Avatar f tn Of course, I had no idea she was using until I found out by accident after she had been doing it for many months. We immediately put her into inpatient rehab. We could only get a total of 18 days inpatient and a total of 4 months outpatient covered by insurance and other available services. We thought she was doing well, and she of course, learned to hide it very well. If I hae learned anything from this whole horrible experience, addicts are devious, amazing liars.
Avatar n tn Kids are healthy thank god. I miss the husband i saw in rehab, he seems to be gone again! My parents are coming for a visit in a week, going to disney with the kids. Should be fun, but hope it doesn't cause problems with my husband being the way he is lately! Don't need to stress them out. Parents get stressed, it stresses me to the max! Life has definately been better! Prayers and (((HUGS))) for everyone!

Avatar n tn after 3 1/2 - 4 weeks in ICU she was in the rehab part of the hospital for 3 weeks, then transferred to a long term rehab out of town and was there for 3 months. She came home after that. She is not the same person, but to look at her you would think she is just as normal as anyone else. She has no short term memory at all. The doctors did not think she would even survive the night, much less the surgery. She works full time where she was working when it happened and is doing well.
429155 tn?1205676864 Oxycontin.- While awaiting the scan results I was given oxycontin for pain relief, this seemed to do the trick for 2 weeks, 10mg 2x a day, then things hurt again so up the dose went 20mg 2x a day, then 40mg 2x a day, then 80mg 2x a day and up to 120mg 2x a day, recognise the scenereo anyone??..
213044 tn?1236531060 I sense a lot of resentment here, probably justifiied, but counterproductive, and a festering sore. I think you should have looked for special houring for the elderly before moving in. This may not be available in your area. There is often a waiting list. These have private apartments set up for assisted living, daily visits by a nurse, a common area for people on the floor, daily activities, and in my area have a rental rate set at 25% of your monthly income.
544292 tn?1268886268 Hi Tramadol Warriors, Many people have come here for many years, giving support and getting support. Because I still believe that Tramadol is unique in it's ... terror and torture of humans, this thread continues. The people who can understand what you are going thru are the people who have kicked it and there's people here who come back to lend a hand. You also will never need an understanding ear as much. You can do it. You can quit. You do not need to be a slave to Tramadol.
607502 tn?1288251140 The place I volunteer doesn't and neither do the independent living centers but many organizations not just for people with disabilities but any cause function in that manner to empower people rather than leave them in the same position. But that's a seperate political discussion. Actually I don't want to be "happy and cheerful". Not if I don't genuinely feel it.
