Common Questions and Answers about Reasons for delayed period other than pregnancy

period

Avatar n tn Delayed or missed period is known as amenorrhea. Apart from pregnancy, there are many other reasons for a delayed period. The other causes are hormonal imbalance like in PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome), stress, obesity, malnutrition, anemia, hypothyroidism, illness, etc. To be absolutely clear about the status of your pregnancy, I suggest you to test for pregnancy by a highly sensitive pregnancy test 10 days post ovulation with a sensitive ( 20 - 25 mIU ) pregnancy test.

The other causes are hormonal imbalance like in PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome), stress, obesity, malnutrition, anemia, hypothyroidism, illness, etc. The only way to know whether you are pregnant is to get a pregnancy test done. You can do a home pregnancy test by using a pregnancy kit easily available at chemists. Also, it is suggested that you see a gynecologist who will examine you.
Avatar f tn When your period is delayed the first thought is always the chance of pregnancy if you have had unprotected sex but there are also other reasons your period is delayed such as stress, hormonal changes etc. I think you should take a preg test, if its negative maybe wait a week to see if your period comes as you may just be having a longer than normal cycle. If it still hasn't arrived its probably a good idea to see your doctor for a blood test.
Avatar f tn If you're two days late, maybe you are pregnant but tested too early. Maybe your period is delayed because of stress, trying to sync with other women, etc.
Avatar n tn Hello, Delayed or missed period is known as amenorrhea. Apart from pregnancy, there are many other reasons for a delayed period. The other causes are hormonal imbalance like in PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome), overexercising, stress, obesity, malnutrition, anemia, hypothyroidism, illness, etc. You should get all these causes ruled out from a gynecologist. Also then I would suggest you to get your serum HCG levels estimated since this is more specific than urine for pregnancy tests.
Avatar n tn Try testing again in a few days, first thing in the morning. Other common reasons for a delayed period include stress and anovulatory cycle (no egg this month, it happens occasionally). If you're at least two weeks late and are still getting negatives at home, you might want to ask your doctor about a blood test to be sure.
Avatar f tn Relax. You clearly do not have HIV. Your tests prove this repeatedly. The concept of "delayed seroconversion" is an urban myth with no meaningful data to substantiate it. Pregnancy does not change this. You do not have HIV- period. Your stress is your problem. you are letting this exposure eat you alive. What you need is not testing or medications for an infection you do not have but help working through this.

Avatar m tn Your period is going to be about 6 days later than usual or so. But rest assured, every woman is late at one time or another. It happens to us all. I'd not worry. Your period is coming.

Avatar f tn Hello, If there is no history of unprotected intercourse then this delaying of periods can be due to causes other than pregnancy. There are several reasons why a woman have delayed menstruation and this could be due to unhealthy diet, stress (emotional or physical), sudden weight gain or loss, caffeine, alcohol, and smoking. Gynecological conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and uterine cysts or polyps, can also bring about alteration in menstrual cycle.
Avatar n tn A negative test at 2 weeks late is over 99% accurate, so it's pretty safe to say you're not pg. Good luck at the docs, be sure to ask what they think. They'll probably do a blood test if you ask them.
Avatar n tn Hello, There are many reasons why a woman may miss her period besides pregnancy. The visit with your ob/gyn should be helpful to sort out why. Best regards, Dr.

603463 tn?1220630455 No follow up evaluation is needed after emergency contraception, unless the period is delayed by more than a week, irregular bleeding persists, or abdominal pain or other symptoms develop. A barrier method of contraception (such as condom or diaphragm) should be used for the remainder of the cycle. Emergency contraception can be repeated within the same cycle if necessary. Emergency contraception is not recommended as a regular form of birth control.
Avatar n tn I hope you find some answers. Please post, if you don't mind, if you find anything out. My new ob/gyn had no ideas, other than saying that I should check with a dermatologist and get on some pills to reduce the amount that I sweat. It only happens right before my period, so I guess I could time taking the pills pretty well, but I wish there was another answer. But, it feels better that I'm not the only one!
