The most absorbable forms are probably citrate or malate for the calcium and citrate for the magnesium, though some are now high on the taurate form. All minerals should be taken with meals for best absorption.
Avatar m tn I had severe vitamin D deficiency and severe magnesium deficiency and could not raise my calcium levels. Magnesium is the boss of vitamin D and calcium. Vitamin D is the boss of calcium. Don't mess with the boss! :) Iron deficiency and vitamin D deficiency are the two most common deficiencies world wide affecting billions.
Avatar m tn The reason your other doctor told you not to have milk is because milk has calcium and calcium inhibits the absorption of thyroid medications. Calcium is supposed to be separated from thyroid medications by 4 hours; however, that's calcium supplements, which, typically, have several mg of calcium per serving. I don't believe there's enough calcium in the little bit of milk one would put in a cup of coffee to affect absorption of your medication.

874521 tn?1424116797 The news about magnesium and calcium is far from new. But for the conventional doctor who routinely suggests that his patients take calcium supplements to promote healthy bones and prevent colorectal cancer, this news is probably a wake up call: Vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are usually team players, not loners. Dietary sources of calcium are typically accompanied by magnesium. So when supplementing with calcium, magnesium supplements should be taken as well.
Avatar n tn Calcium is one of the minerals that interferes with the absorption of thyroid meds. The recommendation is usually to separate calcium from meds by a few hours. Fiber also interferes with absorption.
Avatar n tn I am taking calcium, magnesium, D3, K2 and fish oil. Which ones should be taken together, taken alone and what time of day? I have heard conflicting things. Some say take calcium, magnesium, D3 and K2 together at same time, some say calcium and magnesium seperate from each other, some say D3 before noon, some say D3 with biggest, fattiest meal...some help other vitamins and some block absorption of others, some may be toxic if not taken with others...Very confused!

Best absorbable sources for calcium that won't leach out your magesium as dairy does are the green vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, collards, mustard greens, parsley, dandelion greens, seaweeds, and such. I would bet, also, based on your symptoms, that your problem is more likely magnesium than calcium if it's any mineral deficiency.
