You can give formula while pumping to breast feed but like others said it will be hard to keep up milk supply. Make sure to get the right pump, my first wouldnt latch so I had to pump but I lost my milk by 8 weeks and had to supplement with formula the whole time. Turns out I didnt have the right type of pump and didnt do it enough. I thought I would have problems having a baby breastfeed but my son did and I actually found pumping more awkward.

My boobs got so engourged when i had my son bc my nurse said i had milk for twins and getting the lumps out was a very painful process. I was thinking if i started before baby comes instead of when she comes it could help a lot. Has anyone ever done this?

I could only feed mine up to 2 months. Between pumping and feedings I was not getting ANY sleep. Also, my milk supply was not the best. I used the medela pump, it was great. If it ends up where you just can't breast feed for very long or not at all, don't beat yourself up about it, it happens!! And if you end up going ahead and doing it-awesome job!!

Pumping doesn't stimulate milk production like natural breastfeeding does. Try hand stimylating with pumping every hour, using warm rags around your breast to make the let down reflex easier, and eating certain foods and even some teas can help the body produce milk.

I would not recommend pumping before your milk supply comes after the baby is born it could cause you to go into preterm labor. I'm having my second and after my first I never stopped lactating even when I stopped breastfeeding. I still would leak collosum (don't know if that is spelled right) especially when he would cry.

They need that for a few days and when your real milk comes in, your baby is ready for it. You have to remember that your milk is made exactly for the baby, pumping before hand messes all that up and isn't good for either of you.

That sounds great mommikat breastfeeding at night would work for me I read on this blog that milk does come in at the wee hours pumping seems like it's going to be a lot of work but I'm determined to make sure I don't have to resort to formula

I had my baby last week 31weeks 5 days and started pumping and I get alot of milk and I just freeze take it to.

Is anyone else pumping and really getting tired of it? After the hospital made him have a bottle he would never take the breast so I have to pump. I am really getting tired of it. I just feel guilty if he has to have formula all the time (he gets it 2-3 times a day) plus pumping is free. I just find it so hard to take 30 minutes every 3 hours to pump. By the time I'm done both my boys are upset and I have to calm them both down. I just don't know what to do.

A very good friend of mine had twins and they rented a breast pump which is what I plan on doing. It's much better quality than the ones you'd buy in the store. I think it costs about $50.00/month here in Canada. Everyone I know who bought one has been disappointed and hardly used it. The rental one's are hospital grade.
